Why didn’t I know about this cleaning trick with dishwasher tablets?

Cleaning the oven last night, discussing whether we should just put the glass door in the bag with the metal bits even though the instructions says not to. OH suggested I googled to see what t’internet said.

Up came a MN post from 2016, suggesting you use a hard powder, unwrapped dishwasher tablet dipped in water. We tried it and it was amazing. The stuff just came off. Also takes the gunk off the kitchen cupboards and tiles next to the hob. I’ve been wondering round the kitchen with a tab wondering what else it will clean.

I’m a fair age, well versed in various cleaning tips and tricks, how did I not know about this? Neither did my mum. Is this actually really well known? And why hasn’t some bright manufacturing spark come up with an actual cleaning product like this?

Good tips here, but I’m afraid I’m really, really lazy and paid someone to clean my oven for me. (Life’s too short, I told myself). They did a good job too! This was before lockdown obvs.

Just got a professional oven cleaner for the first time - best money I ever spent. Really did come up like a new oven

@piefacedClique

I saw a great tip last week to pre warm the oven before you clean it.... just enough to loosen the grime!

I really don't believe that people need to be told this!

Now wondering if I can just shove it in the dishwasher.

Yep. That does a pretty good job.

I did that and came in to find her scraping the bottom with one of my sharp knives, damaging both of them!

So can I clean my oven shelves this way too ?
It would work, but I could imagine it would be a bit of a faff. Worth a try though!

please don’t shit on the door. It’s your life to live how you want but that’s just too far.

I’d wipe that off straight away. Wouldn’t leave it for 6 months.

@CurlyhairedAssassin I looked up a local one - he's great and reasonably priced - I found him on FB a few years ago on the local community page.

I must be doing it wrong as dishwasher tablets never worked for me.

The thick Pink Stuff in a pot (rather than a squeezy bottle) works really well on ovens, oven doors, cupboards and woodwork though. It even worked on my hob extractor which was actually brown with grease instead of white Blush. It was disgusting. I only scrubbed it with a sponge as I had no wire wool pads but it still got rid of it all. Now that was a satisfying bit of housework!

If you are warming the oven before cleaning to soften dirt, fill your roasting tray with a kettle of boiling water.

The steam in the oven will mean most dirt will wipe away easily.

Got this tip thirty years ago when i moved into a flat with a grubby oven.

Gave it a go whilst cooking pasta this evening (on the hob) and it was strangely satisfying and very quick. I used a whole dishwasher tablet plus the power ball, which probably shows how overdue a clean was. It sounds very indulgent (in a good way!) to get a professional in to do your oven, but I am quite tempted now.

That was magic! Shiniest oven door in recent history.
Now, does anyone know how to remove the doors from Miele ovens ( i want to clean inside the glass door), it has strange screws. Has anyone tried, or better still, succeeded?

I get a bag of these from Tesco 79p.

Pour some in a cup, add kettle water to make a paste then put it on oven door scrub with a green scourer leave for an hour and scrub again then it’s all clean, I also put all wire racks out of the oven (even trays etc) in the bath and half a bag of those fill with hot water and leave about 2 or 3 hours and they are sparkling.

Why didn’t I know about this cleaning trick with dishwasher tablets?

Oh, I do, I do.

Course we need to be told! After all, in our heads "oven switched on" equals "burnt on, hard-to-remove grease"

I can beat you, I'm too lazy to organise someone to clean, so I simply bought a self-cleaning oven. Very satisfying to operate.

@danni0509. Does the trays etc in the bath leave the bath tub dirty? Or does it just wash down the plug hole?

Report
danni0509 · 03/01/2021 10:05

@CassandraBarrett it washes down the plug more or less, I just wipe around the bath and rinse to get rid of any residue

CassandraBarrett · 03/01/2021 10:39

@danni0509 thanks. I'll give that a go Smile

Bar Keepers Friend powder and a bit of water is brilliant for cleaning ovens, sinks etc.
