Why didn’t I know about this cleaning trick with dishwasher tablets?

Cleaning the oven last night, discussing whether we should just put the glass door in the bag with the metal bits even though the instructions says not to. OH suggested I googled to see what t’internet said.

Up came a MN post from 2016, suggesting you use a hard powder, unwrapped dishwasher tablet dipped in water. We tried it and it was amazing. The stuff just came off. Also takes the gunk off the kitchen cupboards and tiles next to the hob. I’ve been wondering round the kitchen with a tab wondering what else it will clean.

I’m a fair age, well versed in various cleaning tips and tricks, how did I not know about this? Neither did my mum. Is this actually really well known? And why hasn’t some bright manufacturing spark come up with an actual cleaning product like this?

I remove the glass panels and smear them with my usual oven cleaner which is Betterware or similar

I use a dishwasher tablet to clean my instant pot metal pot. Hot water from the kettle then drop the tablet in.

Tried it on dh's metal coffee cup which amazed him and I bought some metal teapots from the charity shop and they needed a good clean. Brought them up great.

@danni0509 Dettol with bleach is also brilliant at removing dark mould stains from tile grout- just spray it on, you don't even have to scrub!

@Mydogisagentleman I know where you're coming from- I thought we had hard water in Cambridge, but here in Yorkshire, the term hard takes on a new meaning! After just one shower, the tap has a substantial chalky residue on it! Luckily, I can keep this in check with Shower Shine.

Last time I cleaned the oven I took out the door and racks, sprayed with cleaning spray and then used a jet wash. For the inside of the over I used a steam cleaner which melted a lot of the grease.

Post Christmas its going to need another good clean.

@PunishmentSnart

You want this, I used the cheapo version think it’s astonish and it didn’t work. First time I used the dettol one I left it an hour and it had barely touched it, second time I left it about 6 hours and all the spots came off.

Does anyone know what gets the black gunk out of the rubber seal in the washing machine?

I second the use of bad oven products / too
strong can ruin an oven. We got ours done by a cleaner and it looked clean but I’ve noticed loads of the paint peeling off now Confused

@Appuskidu he uses non caustic chemicals in a heated tank to clean ovens to a professional standard, otherwise he recommends pink stuff and elbow grease, used in conjunction with, well, elbow grease!!
The trouble is I think that oven cleaning is widely regarded as a horrible job, and products are manufactured to make the job quicker and easier - but this means that they are more and more corrosive and strong, and can shorten the lifespan of the oven...

I tried this and the tablet disintegrated.

I do pop a tablet into a crockpot where the food has baked in and leave it to soak overnight. All the bits then can be brushed off easily

Also use a dishwasher tab in the washing machine if you have cricket whites covered in grass stains and cricket ball red marks (if you have a bowler in the family).

They come out completely clean!

I bought some pink stuff and found the residue a nightmare to get off afterwards. Overhyped

Hate hate hate pink stuff. Smells horrible and is nowhere near as good as barkeepers friend powder which I’ve used for years.
The love for it baffles me.

Not RTFT but my OH is an oven cleaner and can tell immediately if the oven has has Oven Pride or similar used on it - it's corrosive and 'burns' the dirt off and can cause significant damage to the oven! People are always shocked when he points out the damage...

What can be used then that is non-damaging?

Word of warning to people taking the glass out of the oven doors

I accidentally tapped the edge of the glass on the cooker and it exploded into billions (felt like it at the time) of pieces. I was finding chips for days, top of shelves, behind fridge etc

@Mydogisagentleman

I’m obviously a complete minger.
I tried it and failed. I ended up using a blade to remove the gunk.
I can offer dishwasher tablets in the loo.
Our water is ridiculously hard. I chuck a couple I overnight and the toilet is lovely in the morning

Thank you...ridiculously hard water here too. I spend half my week descaling.

Ah feck it lads. Life’s too short. Who looks inside an oven anyway?

I can see the glass from the outside. Makes the kitchen look dirty!

@Zeewest you had me all excited there. I have this exact frying pan, it's only a couple of months old and inexplicably has something burnt on the side. Oven pride nor dishwasher tab has worked so was hoping this was a solution. Seems my husband's suggestion of a new one is correct😀

Dishwasher tablets are great for giving your washing machine a good clean. Just pop one directly into the drum and putvin a long hot wash. They also are good for brightening up whites, I use dishwasher tablets when I wash my net curtains , also every now and then I wash my kids white school shirts with a dishwasher tablet ( I do an extra rinse and spin afterwards).

Thank you for log burner info, I will do the ashes thing tomorrow. I only use kiln dried wood, I think it may be WD40, I was spraying it on the hinges. Won't do that again!

Take care with dishwasher tablets please. They're nasty things chemically so mind your eyes and skin in particular (especially as water is involved), rinse it off well wherever you've used it.
