Help me find a book - set in Wales? Myths and legends?

Hive mind please help!

When I was a child (probably late 80s, could be early to mid 90s), I read a book about a girl who I think was called Nia. She was living or staying in Wales and there was some connection to Welsh myths / the Mabinogion. I seem to remember she cut off some silvery curtain fabric to weave into a tapestry and some of the myths related to horses.

And that’s all I can remember! Anyone recognise this vague description?

Was it The Snow Spider?

PicardsFlute · 01/01/2021 14:28

I was going to say the Snow Spider too!

Aisforharlot · 01/01/2021 14:59

Jenny Nimmo

Jenny Sullivan, the Magic Apostrophe? It was a series about a Welsh girl who discovers she is from a family of witches?

Haggyhaggerson · 01/01/2021 15:01

Wait I just saw the name of the girl, in this book she was Tanith.

ChristingleAlltheWay · 01/01/2021 15:02

Snow Spider. There was a BBC adaptation in the 90s, and another one last year.v

Oh yes, The Snow Spider - without a shred of doubt.

The made a lovely TV series of this back in the 1980s (?). Filmed it in my childhood home town.

The Owl Service

Emlyn's Moon is the one with the tapestry and where Nia is first a main character. Then there is also the Chestnut Soldier. These are in the same series as the Snow Spider and are all by Jenny Nimmo.

Yes! Emlyn’s moon! That’s it! Thank you all so much. Off to find some copies to buy right now. I had no idea it was a TV series as well.

Aerhelryn I did think it might be the owl service and read it over Christmas. It’s not the book I was thinking of but it is similar and I enjoyed it so much.
