To get rid of some chairs, they’re everywhere.

Could I possibly have some opinions please?

Me, DP, one DC and a large dog. Open plan type downstairs where it’s essentially all one room except a downstairs bathroom (obvs, that would be weird). We have so many fucking chairs, DP is loathed to get rid of some but I feel like I have chairs coming out of my ears, they’re multiplying argh.

We have 1 x 3 seater sofa, 1 x 2 seater sofa, 1 x armchair and 6 bloody dining chairs at the table ALL IN ONE ROOM.

I’ve been gagging to sell/donate/tip the 2 seater and arm chair but DP is putting up quite a fight.

Two dining chairs can go in the loft. The others could be used if we have lots of guests one day.
Pre covid we only ever really had either my DF and partner or PIL, never together. There’s always someone making a coffee or snack if visitors are here anyway.

Will I regret it? Has anyone else made their living room more streamline and regretted it?

It depends how big your room is, surely.

It’s hardly excessive.

chipsandpeas · 31/12/2020 17:52

i live alone and have a 3 seater and a 2 seater sofa, and a dining table that could take 6 chairs all in the one room

3 dining chairs are in the loft

if you got rid of the 2 seater and the armchair then everyone would be squashed onto the 3 seater

Aprilx · 31/12/2020 17:54

Agree with previous poster, it depends on the size of your room. When I had an open plan kitchen / dining / living room I had the same as you other than your armchair was a chaise longue. It fitted the space without any clutter.

lidoshuffle · 31/12/2020 18:02

Soft seats for 6 people in a 3 person (plus dog!) household is hardly excessive - it only allows for 3 guests. Unless you want guests sitting upright on dining chairs?

MustardMitt · 31/12/2020 18:03

I wouldn’t get rid of any!

LouiseTrees · 31/12/2020 18:25

Yeh doesn’t seem excessive unless there is literally no space. Could put a couple of the dining room seats in a loft or garage or something if need to.

FTEngineerM · 31/12/2020 20:49

Oops.. so it seems it’s pretty normal?!

It’s not idea for people to sit on dining chairs but since it doesn’t happen too often then it wouldn’t be so bad.

How often does everyone sit together anyway? Maybe it’s because DC is very young I have forgotten normal routines 😂

Family of three with lots of dogs here.... two arm chairs, a three seat sofa, a bench seat, and a table for six...

There’s five of us and almost all meals are eaten at the table. Sometimes we have a living room ‘picnic’ Grin

If you’re going to get rid of chairs I think you have to consider having a different table, or maybe having it permanently against the wall else it might look odd.

Hollybutnoivy · 31/12/2020 21:05

It depends on the size of the room but it doesn't seem excessive. We have a 3 seater sofa and an armchair plus 6 dining chairs. We don't have enough space for another sofa but it would be ideal (5 of us).

Hollybutnoivy · 31/12/2020 21:06

Weceatcat the dining table on special occasions but we use it everyday for other stuff!

hiredandsqueak · 31/12/2020 21:14

I have the same as you OP as well as a large footstool but I don't think it's excessive. Just me dd and ds here. I have the chair and footstool the dc have a sofa each.

AmandaHoldensLips · 31/12/2020 21:18

SNAP! I also decided that we have far too many chairs. I put some outside our house over the past few days with "please help yourself" notes stuck on them. They were all taken, and I am very happy with the extra space.

Do not let chairs rule the roost. Set them free!

Snowbored · 31/12/2020 21:25

You need to imagine Dc when they're large and sprawling across the sofa! We're also open plan lounge, dining, kitchen. We've the dining table with 6 chairs, kitchen 2 bar stools, living area with sofa thats a 3 seater, 2 seater and extra bit and two arm chairs. DH takes all of the 3 seater if he puts his feet up, DC1 is almost there. DC 1&2 won't sit on the same part of the sofa 🙄 If all four of us watch a film together the whole sofa is full. We use the arm chairs during the day and sofa in the evening.

2 DC, a friend round plus parent and sibling and the seats at the table are all in use.

honeylulu · 31/12/2020 21:30

It sounds fine. We have a four seater sofa, two seater sofa, loveseat (sits two people if cuddled together) and rocking chair in the living room. Then dining room with six chairs (four spares concealed amongst the bedrooms). Then kitchen diner with table and six more chairs plus a small two seater sofa. There are more sofas/armchairs/beanbags in a basement living room. Can never have enough places to sit/sprawl!

Northernmummy80 · 31/12/2020 21:36

Think a diagram would help with the layout....I love a good diagram 🤣

Katjolo · 31/12/2020 21:46

Yes to a diagram please.

Kondo Time

Do they bring you joy?

ProbablyFault · 31/12/2020 21:54

We have the opposite problem 😄, can we please have some of your chairs?

FTEngineerM · 31/12/2020 22:12

This is something you’d find on a Year 3 class wall but.. best I could do in my phone in the darkSmile.

Red are chairs, green is dining and blue is kitchen units. Pink is doors and how they open. Left hand long rectangle is the entrance hallway and then stairs.

I think it’s 19m2 overall so not much to play with. It’s certainly not that empty, I should probably redraw Sad

The armchair has a bit of sentimental value but everything else nope! I feel like it needs a change.

I’ve just realised DC. has a nuna chair and a magic relax thing at the table so there’s another two bloody chairs in the same room.

OP posts:
chuffedasbuttons · 31/12/2020 22:30

That looks tight on space.

I think you could reduce a little bit if you have lots of family film night stuff, keep the sofa area.

Dining table is too big.

Table for 4. 4 chairs. Spares in garage.

chuffedasbuttons · 31/12/2020 22:32

I'm a house of three. One adult. Two DC and one medium dog who is not allowed on the sofa Grin

We have a corner sofa. we all for for movies - it has a large riser foot rest thingy. Two of us put feet up here and one has the lounging corner. Perfect and lots of room.

4 seater round dining table. Leaf fold table and loads of folding chairs in garage. I've had twelve seated for dinner on occasion.
