To think it’s okay to take the kids b&m

Don’t like shopping myself or taking my kids shopping at the best of times so don’t really like taking them even more so now with covid.

Really need a few essentials. Bread, milk etc. This morning I came on my first period in 4 years and haven’t got any supplies (sorry tmi). Really can’t be assed with a supermarket, partner is at work until tonight, our village shop only takes cash and I have no cash. Not sure what’s open locally tomorrow.

Aibu to take the kids b&m? We’ve just gone into tier 3. Worried that’ll be frowned upon if I take dc in? All I’ve seen is people moaning that children and families are in shops etc.

They are pretty good really. Too young for masks but sanitise regularly and know how to social distance.

Can you tell I’ve barely been out during the pandemic ^^ and tend to get everything delivered!

I would go

audweb · 31/12/2020 13:23

Just go. Mind you I’m a single parent who has been dragging her child to the shops or out and about with me since March last year, and to be honest so no one has either said anything to me, or even looked at me funny for doing so. Got a bit paranoid about how people would react thanks to mumsnet at the beginning and then quickly realised people out there didn’t have an issue.

kingat · 31/12/2020 13:23

I also cant believe you need to produce this many paragraphs explaining why you go to a shop, what is word coming too

RecipeStealingBitch · 31/12/2020 13:23

YANBU at all! Hope you get everything you need! I went into my local B&M yesterday and it was fine.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/12/2020 13:24

The moaning is not about people doing a shop with kids. It's more about people browsing sections to look for what new plate/candles they fancy while their kids are running around getting close to people.

In your case it's just absolutely not unreasonable to go! You need stuff, your kids behave, why not.

mumwon · 31/12/2020 13:26

as long as 5 year old doesn't mind wearing a mask why shouldn't they? I am not suggesting forcing dc but I don't think its a bad idea

WombatChocolate · 31/12/2020 13:28

Go, and get the other items youll need over the next few days while you're there.

Where there's an issue is people going shopping as some kind of leisure trip or going pretty much every day.

Yes, there are a small number of people who need to go much more regularly because they cannot carry enough to last longer, on public transport or walking. Lots of people though could easily go far less regularly and choose not to.....because they like a regular shopping outing or can't be arsed to plan ahead, even for a couple of days.

If you need to go out, of course you should. It's just when there's a 'stay at home' order people should think a bit more carefully about if each trip is necessary. It certainly gets spread in supermarkets and shops. The fewer trips the better.

KatherineJaneway · 31/12/2020 13:29

Go. There might be some who judge but I don't take a lot of notice who is around me in shops much. I assume that if a woman or man has their kids with them, there was no one else at home to mind them.

strawberrypip · 31/12/2020 13:32

Wouldn't give this a second thought. Just go.

sergeilavrov · 31/12/2020 13:34

You might find the village shop will let you drop the money off later if you don’t feel comfortable going into town/being exposed. Often they’re quite flexible with locals, especially in emergencies.

ancientgran · 31/12/2020 13:41

I don't think it is a problem in big shops, annoying in shops where you can only have 2 or 3 people but again if you are with someone vulnerable (adult or child) then that is how it is. I haven't done much shopping this year, having my shopping delivered so it has only been the occasional thing when I've run out of something but locally I haven't seen anyone objecting to family groups. For myself I like seeing children, little ones make it all seem more normal to me.

ancientgran · 31/12/2020 13:42

I don't know what b&m is like, we don't have one where I live but I think they are quite big aren't they?

AldiAisleofCrap · 31/12/2020 13:42

Too young for masks but sanitise regularly and know how to social distance. I assumed you meant toddlers. Of course 10 and 5 year olds can wear masks.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/12/2020 13:43

ten and five are not to young for masks - mine are younger and have no problems wearing them.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 31/12/2020 13:50

Honestly OP, don’t think twice, go and get what you need. Flowers
I’ve been in the shop with teens at various points as I’m disabled, but sometimes need more than I can just send them in for (I’m also a single parent). No one has given me a dirty look (I suppose there’s a chance that someone’s started a mumsnet thread about me 😂) and my area has been tier 2 to tier 4 at different times.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/12/2020 13:54

I don't understand why people judge 1 adult and young kids shopping. The only time I did give them the "the fuck is wrong with you look" was when a child run into me while I was standing by fruit stand... Not that's judgable. Not shopping with keeping kids close

Livpool · 31/12/2020 14:00

Just go - I wouldn't give this a second thought!

They do loads of chocolate if you don't fancy a drink and have started your period Smile

Tenyearsgone · 31/12/2020 14:03

I wouldn't make my kids wear mask. Not in a million years.

Mrsjayy · 31/12/2020 14:03

Why wouldn't it be alright? You need something you can't wait so you need to take the children.if anybody says anything that's their issue not yours.

shouldistop · 31/12/2020 14:05

5yos have to wear masks in Scotland.

Op of course you're not being unreasonable.

nicky7654 · 31/12/2020 14:06

Of course you can take your kids shopping! Why you asking permission?

Charlie63849 · 31/12/2020 14:09

Iv took my kids with me throughout and no one ever looks. It’s just on MN everyone froths over it.

Go, get everything you need and if you want to look at all the other bits and bobs you can. The shops open so you can go down every aisle if you want.

Fuckityfucksake · 31/12/2020 14:15

I'd not give you a second glance tbh. I'd assume you needed to be there for whatever reason.
As someone upthread said already it's the famillies of 2 adults plus children that I think why? Surely 1 should nip in not the whole family.
