To think it’s okay to take the kids b&m

Don’t like shopping myself or taking my kids shopping at the best of times so don’t really like taking them even more so now with covid.

Really need a few essentials. Bread, milk etc. This morning I came on my first period in 4 years and haven’t got any supplies (sorry tmi). Really can’t be assed with a supermarket, partner is at work until tonight, our village shop only takes cash and I have no cash. Not sure what’s open locally tomorrow.

Aibu to take the kids b&m? We’ve just gone into tier 3. Worried that’ll be frowned upon if I take dc in? All I’ve seen is people moaning that children and families are in shops etc.

They are pretty good really. Too young for masks but sanitise regularly and know how to social distance.

Can you tell I’ve barely been out during the pandemic ^^ and tend to get everything delivered!

Just go. You need shopping and have no one to leave them with.

I admit to moaning to Dh about whole families in shops but that's when I've seen 2+ adults in there with several kids so one adult could easily stay home/in the car with the kids.

One adult with kids I'd assume you have no other option.

SuperbGorgonzola · 31/12/2020 12:46

I wouldn't think anything of a parent shopping alone with primary aged children. I'm more sceptical of the many couples of all ages shopping together to be honest. More than I would expect to be because of a hidden disability.

Star1402 · 31/12/2020 12:47

Thanks all! We live very rurally with one village shop that doesn’t take card! Going shopping is always an effort from here. Tend to get it delivered 🤣

Go and don’t give it a second thought. If you want to wander down the booze aisle please do. If the shops open feel free to look in whatever aisle you want.

hedgehoglurker · 31/12/2020 12:49

Might be sensible to get some cash while you are out.

Star1402 · 31/12/2020 12:51

@Meepmeeep I’m actually a non drinker but may consider a drink tonight to see off this poop year so good idea (not that it’s gonna get miraculously better in 2021 of course).

Tenyearsgone · 31/12/2020 12:52

Alcohol and crisps are essentials on NYE.

Star1402 · 31/12/2020 12:52

@hedgehoglurker absolutely! I always forget thank you. In the time of shops preferring card payments everywhere the one local shop to me can only take cash (it’s very small and basic)!

At the start when my husband was off he done the shopping alone and I stayed at home with ds. However I've had to take my son shopping at times when it couldn't be avoided. He's 5 so can't stay at home on his own and we needed essentials. We go straight to want we need, get it and go, we always try to get in and out as quick as we can. People have to shop, and it's not always possible to not take children.

BabyofMine · 31/12/2020 12:53

We’ve just gone in to tier 4 and my partner will still be taking my daughter to the supermarket. We insist she sits in the trolley seat so she can’t get in people’s way or ignore distancing rules. It’s one of the few places she sees other people and gets out of the house and I’m not going to take that away from her. I’ll go so far as not going myself so we don’t get judged-pants people tutting at us (this has never happened though, people IRL don’t give a monkeys). He can be a single dad for an hour or two a week.

MistletoeandGin · 31/12/2020 12:56

@Butterymuffin

Don't forget all this is for your protection as well as other people's. We know kids can pick up this new strain of the virus.
Doesn’t change the fact that the OP needs tampons though.
Star1402 · 31/12/2020 12:59

Thanks all. We’ve gone from tier 1 to tier 3 in a week so it’s all a little confusing for us!

I haven’t actually been out in the car since 23rd dec (partner has been to work and we’ve had a shop delivered this week). So I’m hoping a change of scenery whilst getting needed essentials will do me good. Only so many walks around the village with the children on their new scooters I can take 🤣

We have little ones wearing masks at 4+ so yours could too.

Sanitary products are essential, (browsing for shit isn't) so I don't think it would be unreasonable today.

GlitterandBalloons · 31/12/2020 13:11

If kids are too young to be left at home alone and they are with 1 adult (not 2, one of which could have stayed home or in the car with kids) then no one will take a second look as they know you have to have them with you. The only time Ive seen people get annoyed at families is when they arrive as a full family unit with both parents.

Tenyearsgone · 31/12/2020 13:12

Don't make the 5 year old wear a mask.

BringPizza · 31/12/2020 13:13

@Soubriquet

Just go. Ignore if anyone gives you looks

Kids can’t be left alone if young now can they and you have to go.

This. Wave your tampons in their face.
Tenyearsgone · 31/12/2020 13:15

No one in RL will give you a second glance. It's only on MN that people froth about kids in shops.

greeneyedlulu · 31/12/2020 13:16

Can you get deliveroo in your area? Our local co-op is on it and they can deliver sanitary products, bread, milk etc

spiderlight · 31/12/2020 13:17

If you have a co-op anywhere nearby, they've just started doing same-day deliveries, which are very handy in emergencies. If not, just go - you have full justification for needing to take them and you sound as if you're going to be sensible and not potter round browsing for an hour.

sausageathlete · 31/12/2020 13:18

At 10 & 5 they can stay in the car while you run in and get them. A petrol station shop might be a better option perhaps?

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 31/12/2020 13:18

I'm in tier 4 and you wouldn't even know it still busy everywhere. Prob why we are tier 4 🙈👎 just take them is what I was getting at x

Bagelsandbrie · 31/12/2020 13:18

Just go. People are judging everyone for everything at the moment.

Givemeabreak88 · 31/12/2020 13:20

It’s funny people seem to think deliveroo is the answer to everything. I tried to order nappies for my dd from the coop and the order was cancelled, we desperately needed some but they cancelled it as soon as I tried to order. The only next available place was a local corner shop who wanted £11 for a pack of nappies that is around £4/5 In the shop Hmm obviously I just went out instead

kingat · 31/12/2020 13:21

Omg, just go
I would never leave my child in the car, I can believe ppl suggest that

Butterymuffin · 31/12/2020 13:22

@MistletoeandGin and you can see that I acknowledged that if you need essentials, you need them. No problem with that. But the advice to be quick, not wander around for ages is what's for everyone's benefit.
