AIBU to think that every winter from now on there will be a lockdown?

Once we've vaccinated against Covid enough, then Flu will be back (with social distancing relaxed). With Flu overwhelming the NHS every winter before this year when it's been Covid, I'm really worried that every November to March, we are going to be locked down again.

We've shown as a country (UK) that we're willing to accept lockdowns, strict or not, and frequently now, so what's to stop them doing it again? When they think that the NHS is going to be overwhelmed and they can argue that it's an emergency and in our interests / safety? And who would stop them if it isn't?

Given children cant have the vaccine (I think?) Surely they will be at an at risk and need the vaccination as they get older?

LizDiz · 05/01/2021 20:04

@froggywentacarolling Tell that to the parents of all the children who have died from COVID.

I dont think that's very helpful. As I am sure you know, the number of children who have died of Covid is tiny and almost with exception, they had an underlying illness. I'm not saying that isn't tragic for those involved, but your wording makes it look like there are many children involved which isn't true. Best not to cause panic dont you think?

Nohomemadecandles · 05/01/2021 20:06

Doom-mongering. Awesome.

RedToothBrush · 05/01/2021 20:08

The rate of hospitalisation for Covid-19 is more than 10x that of flu.

That's the problem.

Its not deaths.

anon2334 · 05/01/2021 20:08

justanotherneighinparadise

You are certainly being unreasonable and irrational to think that.

Is she now? 🙄

VinylDetective · 06/01/2021 09:49

The death rate is closer to 2%, which doesn't sound like much but when you consider the UK population, 2% or even 1% is a staggering number.

It’s slightly more than 1%, with an average age higher than average life expectancy. More alarmist hyperbole.

froggywentacarolling · 06/01/2021 10:08

Has YOUR child died? No? Then shut the fuck up.

Can't believe the selfish, selfish cunts on here.

Oh and millions of people have underlying conditions. But fuck disabled people, it's perfectly fine if we die, right? Our lives don't matter.

Between the alarmist doom mongerers insisting the pandemic will never end and our great-grandchildren will be born and die in lockdown, and the Covid-deniers insisting it's just flu (and anyway only old and disabled people die so fuck 'em) and that we should never have locked down or taken Covid seriously at all, there's no room for sensible, moderate voices.

This is a very serious disease which needed to be taken seriously. If we had not locked down the NHS would have been overwhelmed and the death rate would have shot up. But it's being handled, we have a vaccine, and pandemics even without vaccines tend to have a natural lifespan of 2-3 years anyway.

See? It is actually possible to find a logical, rational middle ground between "we're all going to dieeeeee and be locked indoors forever!! hysteria, and "Covid's just flu ignore it" arsehole conspiracy theory nonsense.

LizDiz · 06/01/2021 11:20

What a drama llama you are @froggywentacarolling.

LizDiz · 06/01/2021 11:33

And no I won't 'shut the fuck up'because I dont agree with you scaremongering about the rates of children who have died. As I said it's very sad , but its thankfully very rare so let's not cause panic where its bot needed

RCV2687 · 09/01/2021 17:03

Oh hun you are not being unreasonable. I came off netmums a long long time ago, because of how catty the mums on here can be. I didn’t need that kind of negative energy in my life. But it’s absolutely not ridiculous to think. They are already talking about lockdowns next winter, once everyone has been vaccinated. I don’t know if you can private message but if there are groups who need to expose and stand against it I would be in that group. If you want to stay connected let me know. I’m not a conspiracy theorist at all, I believe covid is 100% real and deadly to some. But even the WHO are no longer recommending lockdowns to combat it. Yet the powerful do nothing else. It has to be worth considering why and what they have to gain. That’s all. I’m sure all these other comments re the economy etc are valid too, but in these crazy and uncertain times nothing is ridiculous except to assume you that the answers. Peace, love and hope xxx

RCV2687 · 09/01/2021 17:04

You have the answers even😂

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 09/01/2021 17:07

I really don’t think so as the economy would be trashed! Try not to catastrophise

@JovialNickname

This will be my last post on this thread because I don't want to derail the OP. However for everybody saying that the idea of regular winter lockdowns are ludicrous, think of the difference in your mindset towards having all your civil liberties removed, between now and this same time last year. Is it really so incredible to think we could have taken a further step in the same direction by winter 2021? And yes of course you can think "yes, but we're accepting all these restrictions because now there's a good reason" but a good reason can always be found.

Me: Happy New Year!

January 2020 you: Happy New Year to you too. I have a feeling that 2020 is going to be great!

Me: Actually, no it won't be. In fact, by this time next year, you will have given up all of your civil liberties and freedoms. You won't be allowed to meet with even close friends and family. All but essential shops will close. Even work, if at all possible, should be carried out from home. And you will be just fine with this.

2020 you: Like fuck will that happen!

Me: It will, because there's a virus that causes a global pandemic.

2020 you: Oh well, in that case I understand. A virus that indiscriminately wipes out, say, 50% of the population? Then we certainly need the UK, and the world, to survive by any means possible.

Me: Oh no, you've misunderstood. This virus is asymptomatic, or manifests as a cold, in the vast majority of cases. The survival rate exceeds 99%. The average age of virus victims is higher than the average life expectancy.

2020 you: WTAF.

The problem is that January 2020 is talking to 2021 you and 2021-you doesn't quite get it.

2021 Lovely: The problem is that all of the intensive care beds and oxygen supplies are needed by the Covid patients so if you have a car accident, cardiac arrest, heart surgery, organ transplant or cancer and need an intensive care bed then you'll die regardless of your age if you cannot get a bed. The average age of Covid patients in intensive care is 60 so many are younger than 60 and they actually refuse ventilators to the older patients who might not survive.

2021 you: Nah

PurplePinkGrass · 09/01/2021 23:28

Oh stop it. I'm sick of these stupid scare mongering threads.

so what's to stop them doing it again?

Because why? Why would they? I'm fairly certain the government don't actually want to trash the economy.

You’re absolutely right OP. These restrictions are here to stay forever. They will relax and tighten but they are here to stay.
