Why on earth did she ever go back to a horrible marriage to a man who throws food at her?

She should have stayed, worked in the bar, had her own life in the sunshine.

(Huge sigh)

We don't actually know. It's open ended.
Love that film.
Had a meal in the restaurant there when I was in mykonos. It's called hippy fish or happy fish can't remember the name but the sunset is fantastic

Dita73 · 31/12/2020 14:53

I hope she stayed and I hope he stayed out there too. New life and all that

Songsofexperience · 31/12/2020 15:06

Bloody hell! Im 41. Middle aged my arse!

icingcupcake · 31/12/2020 15:11

Surely early 40s IS middle-aged if life expectancy is 80?

Sewrainbow · 31/12/2020 21:19

I'd like to think she stayed just because she found herself and was more than just wife and mother treated like shite by her family. I can relate to her thinking back to her life before them and thinking where did the real me go, although happy enough with dh but we've been together since early 20s. I can't believe I'm 2 years older than her Shock

Chimeraforce · 31/12/2020 21:22

Absolutely I always wondered why she went back home.

PamDenick · 31/12/2020 21:35

Interesting. Lots of women now only have toddlers or even new borns at age 42…

Willy Russell was an amazing playwright but certainly of his time/class. Well done to him but it was certainly of its time…

Aweebawbee · 31/12/2020 21:42

I thought the take-home message was that she was going to end up stuck at the kitchen sink talking to a wall wherever she chose to live.

God, what does that say about me?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 01/01/2021 11:47

I can’t believe people are ‘annoyed’ or ‘angry’ at chips and egg. It was just a funny quirk of the character!

That's what you took awayvfrom the thread?Grin

Well, about four different people said it Confused

shivermetimbers77 · 01/01/2021 14:03

I definitely think she stayed. She seemed so much more confident and independent by the end of the film. Back to the old Shirley.

Movinghouseatlast · 01/01/2021 14:03

It is open ended in the play. It is very dated, I saw it recently (online obvs) and I wondered why they didn't slightly update it.

The husband is abusive through our modern eyes though, so I guess an update wouldn't really work.

middleager · 01/01/2021 14:05

They left the ending ambiguous though, which was the right ending (although I would have stayed without him!)

shivermetimbers77 · 01/01/2021 14:08

Educating Rita ended in a similarly ambiguous way. Loved that one too!

sueelleker · 01/01/2021 14:14

@Tinacollada

LOVE this film!

Can't beat Joanna lumley saying "I'm a hooker darling"

And the shocked waitress pouring tea all over the sandwiches!
Quirrelsotherface · 01/01/2021 14:21

Chips and egg in that order (if that's the quibble) is how it was said in Liverpool and very common in the 80's.

I hadn't seen this film until this Christmas Eve, thought it was brilliant. In the play Shirley was 42 but I think Pauline Collins in the film was nearer 50 when she played her.

Also, we’d have to watch Shirley go through the complexities of the Greek visa system post-Brexit. Can’t just run away to Greece and become a waitress now.
lockedownloretta · 02/01/2021 17:24

I grew up in liverpool in the 70s and 80s and NOBODY said chips and egg!! It was Not common at all !!

Perhaps just those you knew, lockeddownloretta. And yes, Pauline Collins was almost 50 when she played Shirley. She is stunning in it and a great advert for the older woman, wish there were more roles like this for older actors.

VestaTilley · 03/01/2021 09:02

@kwiksavenofrillsusername my DPs still eat egg and chips for tea Grin my DM has a proper chip pan and everything.

jerrywesterby · 03/01/2021 13:00

@lockedownloretta

I'll tell you what really pissed me off. Thecway she kept saying chips and eggAngry

Like saying pepper and salt or chips and fish. Just wrong!

If you're from Liverpool - which and Willy Russell are - it's definitely chips and egg!
lockedownloretta · 03/01/2021 13:39

I AM from liverpool! It's egg and chips!!
