Aibu to think that Shirley Valentine should have stayed in Greece?

Why on earth did she ever go back to a horrible marriage to a man who throws food at her?

She should have stayed, worked in the bar, had her own life in the sunshine.

(Huge sigh)

I felt like they went back home together and tried to work it out. I actually felt sorry for him at the very end because it seemed to me that he was vulnerable and lost without her whereas she was coming into her own power.
They remind me very much of my parents who were of similar ages back then. Their scenario didn't involve mum going off to Greece, but rather getting a job she liked and was good at, after being at home with kids for years, and dad learning that he had to pull his weight in the home.

Pumpkintopf · 31/12/2020 00:32

I too watched it this afternoon. I think she stayed in Greece. Maybe her husband stayed for a holiday but I don't think she went back with him.

chuffoff · 31/12/2020 00:34

I watched this with my sons this afternoon, at ages 8 and 6 they were strangely engrossed by it (lost interest towards the end). They were both horrified by the way the husband and daughter spoke to her and were rooting for her to stay in Greece. My eldest also declared that 42 (my age) was no way near middle age yet.

grassisjeweled · 31/12/2020 00:37

Fuck I'm 39 soon, so almost middle aged?

But eligible to have affairs with Greek fishermen?

grassisjeweled · 31/12/2020 00:39

@chuffoff

Is there any sex /swearing in it? Might watch it with 7 year old DS (save me from avelina, amelia etc etc)

U2HasTheEdge · 31/12/2020 00:42

She did stay! She fucked him off and stayed in Greece and had lots of sex with handsome men.

Im 42. Ive booked greece for this summer. Taking the husband with me though Grin

justanotherremainer · 31/12/2020 01:09

I watched it last week on channel 5 but missed the end!

I was soooo hoping she stayed in Greece without her vile husband.

I couldn’t find it on channel 5 online. Any ideas where I can see just the end?

CountessFrog · 31/12/2020 01:11

Chips and fucking egg

SinisterBumFacedCat · 31/12/2020 01:16

I remember seeing this as a teenager in the cinema and now I am older than Shirley!

I think at the end they seem to be having a heated discussion, I think he stays on for a bit and maybe they work it out.

I can’t watch this film without the original swearing though, the edited version is just duller without “You scared! You think I want to make fuck with you!”.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 31/12/2020 01:22

Loved the play, the film not so much, but still watch it if it comes on tv, In the play, she stays in Greece.
Just looked up the play on Wikipedia:
"The film ends with the two drinking wine by the sea, leaving open the question of how the matter resolved."

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 31/12/2020 01:23

duur - looked up film on wikipedia

BaronessVonSchlepp · 31/12/2020 06:36

It wasn't clear at the end if she would stay or go. I love that film and I hope she stayed! Once your husband has thrown egg and chips over your lap, it's over.

Celticdawn5 · 31/12/2020 06:52

The chips and egg thing annoyed me enormously too!

Tinacollada · 31/12/2020 06:57

LOVE this film!

Can't beat Joanna lumley saying "I'm a hooker darling"

Monkeytennis97 · 31/12/2020 07:07

42 was definitely middle aged in the 80s. My parents were touching 40 in the 80s and definitely thought of themselves as middle aged.

Skipsurvey · 31/12/2020 07:18

such a great film

Mindymomo · 31/12/2020 07:21

It was great watching this again. I think at the end she told him what was what. I then watched Dirty Dancing, had dinner then watched Ghost. Usually this time of year I’m cooking, cleaning and preparing for NYE party, so made a lovely change.

showmethegin · 31/12/2020 07:23

"Sex for breakfast, sex for lunch and sex for dinner, it's marvellous, it's called the F Plan!"

Love Shirley Valentine, but can only watch it in the week before I go to Greece (we are there a lot) because it makes me miss it so much!

Strongswans · 31/12/2020 07:38

One of my favourite films, I always thought they sat at that table and talked and talked, agreed to go their separate ways, then
Joe went home and Shirley stayed in Greece.

But..... chips and fucking egg!!! It's just wrong.

billy1966 · 31/12/2020 10:41

Gosh it's coming back to me now.

The husband turned into a right selfish pig and the daughter was a right brat too.

I hope she stayed on.

Hobbesmanc · 31/12/2020 10:53

I think she's stays, makes a go of the restaurant. Lives a lovely life as an expat with cats, little garden with herbs. Maybe home for the winter season to see the kids

lockedownloretta · 31/12/2020 14:24

I hope so. I like the idea of her with a herb garden...
