Bordering Tiers!

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 00:20

I live on a border, it's ridiculous - walk 5 minutes one way and it's tier 2, 5 minutes the other way and it's tier 4 🙄🤦‍♀️

I'm tempted to walk to the open pub 5 minutes to the right tomorrow AIBU Grin

I think you're being silly OP. Borders have to be drawn somewhere and there will always be someone in a situation like this. In your case it really is about using common sense.

GreyHare · 30/12/2020 13:23

Are you my neighbour? although we don't have a pub within walking distance, but my address/postcode is tier 2 but we pay council tax to a tier 4 district, my supermarket is in tier 2 but local shop is tier 4, I could almost spit on the county border signs from my driveway, seems utter madness to me.

Apollo3 · 30/12/2020 13:24

you're telling me it's not a farce that my neighbour can go to the pub I can't. Give over.

No its not a farce, its how borders work ffs. I know of someone whose house is one country and their garden is in another. I know British people don't learn much geography at school but you should at least know that boundaries are never simple?

GreyHare · 30/12/2020 13:25

@PointeShoesandTutus

Surely the logical thing is to do as other countries have done and restrict distance? So you can only travel say 5km from home? Simple, understandable and saves farcical situations like these!
Well what if you live further than 5km from the local supermarket?
Apollo3 · 30/12/2020 13:32

Well what if you live further than 5km from the local supermarket?

You could, and I know this is out there, actually use some common sense, do what you need to do while being respectful of the point of the rules without necessarily following them to the letter, based on your own circumstance of living on a tier border?

(that is what is expected of someone in that situation, apparently its too difficult for most though)

nosswith · 30/12/2020 13:44

@ConfessionsOfAChocoholic restricting distance should be only where you can walk or cycle. Except for shopping and this could be restricted by the length of time and days of the week shops are open.

The OPs question may be academic shortly as the neighbouring area could be put in tier 4.

Changi · 30/12/2020 14:11

Well what if you live further than 5km from the local supermarket?

Wales had a more sensible 5 mile limit and people coped. If the nearest food shop was 10 miles away, it was considered an essential journey and you could travel to it.

eternalopt · 30/12/2020 14:18

The border has to be somewhere! Very nature of borders

DominaShantotto · 30/12/2020 14:23

We lived on the tier border for a few weeks - supermarket in the next tier down. We went regardless as it was an arbitrary line that had to be drawn somewhere and Covid was not going to see the county border and fuck off home. I took the regs as "don't go buggering off three towns over as they've got a nice big Tesco" versus the absolute "you shall not pass" entering the next county over.

Friend had half her back garden and shed in one tier... house in another at that point as well - so we could have climbed over her back fence and had a social gathering with the lawnmower but not on her patio.

cantdothisnow1 · 30/12/2020 14:37

I live on the edge of tier 3/ tier 2 (just within tier 3). Businesses in tier 2 (pubs and restaurants) are rightly checking postcodes before allowing table bookings.

It is a bit irkesome that we have less freedoms than the neighbouring village but the borders have to be somewhere.

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 14:42

@cantdothisnow1 if it was the neighbour village I would get that but it's not, it's the same one! Even so, anyone could the incorrect postcode!

OP posts:
cantdothisnow1 · 30/12/2020 14:49

well anyone can lie about anything.

I could give my mothers postcode but i won't because it's not fair on the business owners who risk fines if they breach the regulations.

chubbycheeks26 · 31/12/2020 10:01

@cantdothisnow1 this is true!

Just so you all know, as tempting as it was I really couldn't be bothered!
