Bordering Tiers!

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 00:20

I live on a border, it's ridiculous - walk 5 minutes one way and it's tier 2, 5 minutes the other way and it's tier 4 🙄🤦‍♀️

I'm tempted to walk to the open pub 5 minutes to the right tomorrow AIBU Grin

@lidoshuffle well if its the kind of tool we have then I'm off to the pub, if next door can go so can I!

VinylDetective · 30/12/2020 12:40

We were bordered by two Tier 4 areas when we were in Tier 2, we’re now Tier 4 as well. I wonder why that could be?

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 12:40

@Muffinbutton WOOOPIE, okay the rest of Hampshire then. The New Forest isn't higher enough for the tier 3 either!

OP posts:
Quaagars · 30/12/2020 12:42

Not voting either way because even though I wouldn't do it, I can totally get why you're tempted as it's absolutely ridiculous!

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 12:42

@VinylDetective I think travelling in to the next town for the pub is out of order yes, but I think in the same village when the house next to me is allowed is ridiculous.

OP posts:
PointeShoesandTutus · 30/12/2020 12:43

It’s ridiculous. We live in tier 3, but the end of my (less than 200m long!) road is tier 2. DDs nursery is tier 2. Work is tier 2. The playground is tier 2. The nearest supermarket, post office, bank etc are all tier 2. If I went to a tier 3 supermarket it’d take me an extra 25 minutes.

I fear we’re going to be moved to tier 4 this afternoon, and nearby will remain tier 2. I have no idea how this will be feasible at all without breaking rules. Frankly, I’m exhausted thinking about it. And I won’t be saying to my DD ‘oh no, walk past the playground at the end of the street, it’s only for tier 2 children, we must stay home.’ I’m just done.

Changi · 30/12/2020 12:45

What would you suggest in place of hard borders? Some form of gradual transition from high restrictions to low over a distance of a mile or two?

Toocold · 30/12/2020 12:45

Crazy isn’t it, where I am one side of a road sign is tier 4, the other one second walk is tier 2!

Aprilx · 30/12/2020 12:45

It isn’t ridiculous because a border has to be somewhere. Otherwise everywhere would be tier 4.

ConfessionsOfAChocoholic · 30/12/2020 12:50

Surely the simplest way to base your decision on the actual tier you are in? You live in a defined tier 4 area? Follow them rules. OK, it might sound stupid but as others have said, they had to draw the borders somewhere. Just because you live closer to the border than others in your area it doesn't mean you get to choose which tier restrictions you want to live by. The reason the rates continue to rise is because people still feel the rules don't apply to them and find a way of convincing themselves that they can do whatever they want.

We are all in this together, some have it worse than others, but we should all be playing our part. Maybe it would be better for the government to make all areas tier 4, that way people won't be tempted to find ways around the rules.

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 12:51

@Aprilx it is ridiculous, my next door neighbour can go to the bloody pub and I can't! Don't be silly. Perhaps all tier 4 is the way to go.

OP posts:
AndcalloffChristmas · 30/12/2020 12:51

I think it just shows why we need to do things nationally, because otherwise you get this mess.

The silliest thing was when they realised they had to put London together because of people travelling round to work but not that the same rules obviously had to apply to the whole commuter belt too! Otherwise people would (and did) just take it home with them.

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 12:55

@ConfessionsOfAChocoholic wE aRe aLl iN tHiS tOgEtHeR, what rubbish. My neighbour is my support bubble so although we are different tiers we count as one household so it's even more tempting to flout the stupid border.

So would you genuinely drive an hours round trip to the supermarket, rather than walking 5 minutes up the road? Just to stay with your tier?

And would you take your child out of nursery? Just to stay in your tier? Or say to your child ‘ok the rest of your class can play on the swings next to our house but we have to go home?’

Really?

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 12:56

@AndcalloffChristmas exactly my opinion!

OP posts:
CupOfTeaAlonePlease · 30/12/2020 13:01

The border has to be somewhere. Do you want everyone to be as restricted as you are with no reason beyond it will satisfy your sense of fairness?

It's a pandemic, it sucks. All we have are blunt instruments.

Pour yourself a drink at home and be glad something is actually being done at last.

PointeShoesandTutus · 30/12/2020 13:02

Surely the logical thing is to do as other countries have done and restrict distance? So you can only travel say 5km from home? Simple, understandable and saves farcical situations like these!

Apollo3 · 30/12/2020 13:05

Its not stupid and it does make sense, the fact that you personally can't get your head around such a simple thing does not make it ridiculous. Hmm

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 13:09

@CupOfTeaAlonePlease erm no Grin

As a support bubble myself and my neighbour will consider ourselves as one household in her house Grin

OP posts:
chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 13:10

@Apollo3 you're telling me it's not a farce that my neighbour can go to the pub I can't. Give over.

Honestly what was the point in you asking the question? Nobody on mn has any say in what you do. You want to go? Then go! Your asking a question that has been raised on mn multiple times and it always brings out a variety of answers. I think your being unreasonable, as per the point of this forum, because throughout the pandemic we have seen lots of people justifying why they shouldn't follow their local restrictions.

chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 13:10

@PointeShoesandTutus yes that would be logical, but too logical for the powers at be to think of.

OP posts:
chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 13:12

@PointeShoesandTutus I would definitely be walking 5 minutes to the local shop and letting my daughter play in the park. It's that simple when it comes to borders. Different if you are well in to a tier area.

OP posts:
chubbycheeks26 · 30/12/2020 13:14

@ConfessionsOfAChocoholic I haven't seen this question asked, so apologies for brining it up again. You say my 'local restrictions' but all of my local amenities are in a different tier!

OP posts:
ConfessionsOfAChocoholic · 30/12/2020 13:17

Surely the logical thing is to do as other countries have done and restrict distance? So you can only travel say 5km from home? Simple, understandable and saves farcical situations like these!

The problem with this is that people will either estimate the distance and go further afield, or they will seek justification to travel further as 'it's only 1km more than what I am allowed and isn't it ridiculous how they defined the distance?'.
