To think some celeb fans are scary!

After watching a film, I googled the two lead actors (one male, one female...okay okay, it was 50 Shades. Don't judge me!! Blush)

Up came a fan site with posts saying "they would totally be together if it wasn't for his wife!" Shock

AIBU to think that it's a bit scary that people are so invested in film characters that they think the actors ARE them, and should be together in real life?

It made me feel a bit ick for the actors involved.....and for poor Jamie Dornan's wife!

@cantthinkofanythingwitty Is that the fella from The Walking Dead? No idea who he is with.

It does make me think that these poor buggers who want to be actors/singers/whatever must have to weigh up jobs pretty carefully.

Yes, they will want to get the work and their profile raising to get more work, but then they have to do publicity and run the gamut of total lunatic fans. And if they happy to have been born with a pretty face, then God help them!

Someone like Julie Walters seems to do ok. I doubt she has crazy fans writing sexual fanfic about her, but she still gets the work. Attractive enough that she looks nice on screen, but not so attractive that people dribble when she walks past and makes her uncomfortable.

Lucky, not happy! Sheesh!
@DeltaAlphaDelta FFS! As an occasional wheelchair user, that makes me rage that some people would do that.

Did the celebs not recognise them and back away slowly/get restraining orders?
Having had relatives who needed wheelchairs it annoyed me too. I gave them quite short shrift, to the point i had complaints made about me, but I never over stepped the mark so it never caused me an issue.

The usual thing is people believing a character is real, or that by having a photo/autograph of someone it gives them some kind of relationship with them.

Or, if someone genuinely doesnt get round to giving everyone a selfie/autograph then those left out feel it acceptable to hurl abuse at them.

I absolutely hate it, and luckily dont need to be involved in it anymore.

SirChing · 29/12/2020 20:14

@DeltaAlphaDelta It sounds fucking awful! I really wouldn't like their job, unless you were at a point where you had made enough to pick and choose your work. But the batshittery before that.....no thanks!

I wonder if these celebs love people who will tell them when they are being a tosser, just because it's a change from the fawning adulation?

I wouldnt be a celebrity for any amount of money! Id rather be skint!

Ive tended to find that the "higher" list the celebrity, the more the come across a "normal" albeit in an extraordinary world.

The lower list celebs tend to be more likely to believe their own hype, and more demanding, and less able to take the crap that gets dished out to them. The a-listers are usually more able to shrug it off.

Who is/are BTS?

BullshitVivienne · 29/12/2020 20:21

Here's a Twitter fan account for the hairdresser's child. 1.2 million followers!! There's an Instagram too but it doesn't seem to have been updated for a few years.

ElizaLaLa · 29/12/2020 20:24

Yes, who is BTS?

SirChing · 29/12/2020 20:24

I wonder if they get further and get more jobs because they are more "normal", or whether they start out being up themselves and get that knocked out of them by their family and mates? So a longevity thing?

I can imagine that Towie people would be insufferable, but people like Rod Stewart would be total darlings.

I just hope you never had to do Benedict Cumberbatch's or Jamie Dornans or BTS's security. Cos those fans sound like nightmares on wheels! @DeltaAlphaDelta

I think a bit of both to the first paragraph.

2nd paragraph - correct on both counts

Luckily none of those in the 3rd paragraph, but plenty of others to make up for it (Harry Potter and star wars spring immediately to mind)!

cantthinkofanythingwitty · 29/12/2020 20:29

@sirching yep that's the guy. I love the Walking Dead but these people are next level. They are terrifying.

I've heard of actors receiving death threats for what their characters do on screen. Some people get far too invested in TV programs.

SirChing · 29/12/2020 20:31

Ah, I can see how Potter maniacs and Star Wars superfans could be.....challenging! Grown adults getting scarily caught up in fantasy worlds is your first warning that the fans grip on reality may be slightly.....off kilter! 😂

@Mrsfrumble

Urgh, yeah, I remember falling down a rabbit hole after a thread on here about crazed Benedict Cumberbatch fans; there were links to whole blogs on Tumblr dedicated to abusing his wife and collecting “evidence” that their marriage is a sham and their children are fake (!) It was very disturbing.
I went down the same rabbit hole, probably from the same threads. There was a woman who claimed to be renting a flat across the street from the Cumberbatch home in an attempt to gather evidence that the marriage was a sham and the pregnancy fake. It was absolutely insane.
SirChing · 29/12/2020 20:32

@cantthinkofanythingwitty well they are zombie enthusiasts so probably not the most balanced Grin

I used to have a shortlived thing for Richard Armitage in his black leather clad character in Robin Hood. I looked him up on the web, I didn't know much about him at that time. Some of the fan pages devoted to him were deranged.

SirChing · 29/12/2020 20:33

@DownstairsMixUp Cleaning is merely a fantasy concept in my house, so I could never be a fan 😂

I’ve been known to write and read a bit of fan fiction about fictional characters. I was really grossed out when I came across fanfic written about real people. It felt so intrusive, proprietary and stalkerish. I really hope the celebs haven’t read it.

I saw on Instagram at the beginning of the year a post from Sam Heughan (Outlander) calling out some fans for trolling his girlfriend. Fans convinced he is married and gas kids with his co star, or is gay and his girlfriends are beards.

Absolutely madness.

SirChing · 29/12/2020 20:42

What. The. Fuck?

So pretty much, it seems to be mostly women who go batshit crazy about the object of their lust.

Why do I think half of them live in an estate, somewhere innocuous like Nuneaton, and have shrines to these blokes, posters on their walls, but crocheted doily things on the arms and headrest of their chairs. And LOADS of ornaments.

The men who are superfans seem to retain themselves to stalking, rape and death threats. So that's nice for the female celebs......Hmm
