board games and xmas

DH and I had a fight over xmas about board games. We loves them whereas I just dont see the point. He was very adamant that everyone plays board games over xmas - it's just what you do. I didnt grow up in the UK and honestly, I have never ones seen my parents play boardgames or any other adult. Is playing board games really such a thing in the UK?

We at board games in Christmas afternoon.
Dc are 9&11 and we played Cluedo and Logo.
When it was just dp and I we used to have a game of Monopoly.

MrsDThomas · 28/12/2020 12:22

We love them. Our favourite is simply Ludo. So easy, competitive and i can wind up DH. We also have Cluedo, Downfsll, The chase, the Wall and the old favourite, monopoly.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 28/12/2020 12:22

YANBU not to want to play them if you don't enjoy them, but our all-adult Christmases always involve getting the board games out. Even with just me and my husband this year due to Covid we've had some rounds of Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit.

I'd say they are a Christmas tradition in the UK, but like any tradition, by no means universally practised.

Elfinghecking · 28/12/2020 12:23

yes, and I think it's a great thing! Gets kids ( and adults) away from screens, is social, is fun, gives a focus to gatherings somethings.
Me and DW play Scrabble, Chess and Backgammon frequently, and chat and banter as we do. We play various board games with the kids like Cluedo, Mousetrap and we play strategy games with them Like Risk, Splendor, Hive.
We take travel sets to the pub or on hols.
I grew up playing all sorts of games with family and friends and have carries on that tradition. WC background, btw, I know that some people thing playing board games is a middle class or above thing but it's not where I come from...

MrsDThomas · 28/12/2020 12:23

Tension and Logo games are also fun. We play them all year.

Spied · 28/12/2020 12:23

We play board games on Christmas afternoon that should readHmm

Elfinghecking · 28/12/2020 12:24

Sorry! is a great game for all ages. So's Ludo or Rummikub or Quirkle.

fairydustandpixies · 28/12/2020 12:27

A board game cafe opened near me a year ago (such bad timing now in hindsight) but it was fab! Always packed, you'd have to book to get a seat and if you went alone you'd soon find someone to play a mad game with that you'd never heard of before! I must admit that I very much enjoyed revisiting KerPlunk!

racletteyum · 28/12/2020 12:27

is playing board games a MC thing? Just curious? Am also not judging - just trying to learn more about the UK. Have lived here for a bit now but there are always new things to discover.

For groups - Pictionary, Exploding Kittens, Charades, and Celebrity Heads ( you just need post its for that one) are fun.
DW has literally just walked in the kitchen and asked if I want a game of Scrabble later...
Just turned tvs and screens off for the day and it's pouring down so the kids will end up playing something ...

rawlikesushi · 28/12/2020 12:28

We play several times a week, all year, and lots more than that over Christmas.

What's not to like? You find the games you enjoy, and it gets everyone around the table laughing and chatting. Great learning opportunities for younger children. Add a glass of wine or snacks if playing with grown ups.

I can't even understand the 'I don't see the point' comment because then what's the point of any social activity?

I'd recommend Risk or Monopoly if you've got several hours to spend, or games like Scattegories, Pictionary, Articulate, Headbandz if you've got younger children.

MondeoFan · 28/12/2020 12:29

We love a board game here. It really makes it seem like Xmas I think. I buy my DC a new one every year to play. My fave is cluedo, DD1 likes monopoly empire and DD2 likes a new one called 5 second rule

Elfinghecking · 28/12/2020 12:30

I'm grew up on an estate and playing games was deffo NOT a MC thing. We all had various games as kids and would go to each others houses to play on a rainy day.
Possibly because games compendiums were relatively cheap to buy - the ones that have 10 or so classic games like drafts, chess etc. And we had no money to go out for the day or go to the cinema or restaurants etc.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 28/12/2020 12:31

is playing board games a MC thing?

I don't think so - we are working class. Possibly one of the few things that transcend class in the UK because I've known board game players from all classes.

rawlikesushi · 28/12/2020 12:31

If you've got older teens - Cards Against Humanity is still popular, Exploding Kittens, Throw Throw Burrito.

We're not fans of Scrabble here but lots are.

Uno if you prefer card games.

rawlikesushi · 28/12/2020 12:34

Oh I'm just so sad that you've never played any op.

What do adults and children do to spend time together in the country you grew up in, if it's too cold/rainy/dark to go outside?

Solina · 28/12/2020 12:37

Love board games, we have started a little tradition of buying one or two new ones for Christmas. But if you don't enjoy them then it is fine to not want to play them all the time. However, I would make an effort at times if it is something your husband enjoys.

MrsFHolmes · 28/12/2020 12:37

I like board games occasionally- but not all board games are the same. I'm sure there must be some board/ card games you could enjoy?
I really do not like Monotony. Or Uno

I do not like anything too strategic or 1:1 adversarial e.g. chess orOthello.

I really like Shut the Box. Mastermind. Yahtzee. Boggle. Bananagram.

I'll play KerPlunk, Ludo, snakes and ladders, Connect 4 to humour my DCs but I don't much enjoy them.

FelicityPike · 28/12/2020 12:37

We play a lot of games as a family. Board and card. My DD is 5 and we started with the Orchard games when she was almost 3.
Growing up we did too.

pinkcattydude · 28/12/2020 12:38
