board games and xmas

racletteyum · 28/12/2020 12:18

DH and I had a fight over xmas about board games. We loves them whereas I just dont see the point. He was very adamant that everyone plays board games over xmas - it's just what you do. I didnt grow up in the UK and honestly, I have never ones seen my parents play boardgames or any other adult. Is playing board games really such a thing in the UK?

OP posts:
2bazookas · 28/12/2020 14:09

Yes

Grumpasaurus · 28/12/2020 14:13

We do in my family. I am Canadian. DH is from the UK. My family love playing them and his never really did. However I have lured him to the dark side as I LOVE games. We have many. 4 year old DS is getting into them too; we started with orchard games and now play animal jenga, Guess Who, Go fish, Happy Families, Dominos, Memory, Monopoly Junior, and a few fishing games with him. And a few learning-type games.

Can't wait until he is old enough for Cluedo, articulate, monopoly, Dixit, etc.

DH and I play scrabble, skip bo, and cards alone.

With friends we play all sorts!

Mydogisagentleman · 28/12/2020 14:17

I got monopoly for Xmas.
It’s based on local landmarks and businesses and raises money for the local hospice.
Me, DH and DD have been playing on and off for the past 3 days

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 28/12/2020 14:18

@SchrodingersImmigrant
Robinson Crueso.
It is amazing.

WeatherwaxOn · 28/12/2020 14:19

I'm from a WC background although would say I'm more MC now. We used to play board games as a child - scrabble, monopoly, trivial pursuit

I occasionally go to a board games club, and have had fun with some new ones, not all of which I can remember!

We've got a few at home now - Uno, Monopoly, Family Triv. Pursuit, Keys to the Castle, Labyrith, Scrabble, Cluedo, Castle Panic being the ones we play most.

numbcheek · 28/12/2020 14:27

Uno is good.
Ticket to ride is also brilliant and you might be able to get an extension pack for your country too.

Squirrelblanket · 28/12/2020 14:31

We very rarely played board games when I was growing up.

I hate playing them. And card games. Grin

Grumpasaurus · 28/12/2020 14:32

One of my new favourites is code words. Exploding Kittens isn't too bad; better with a group though.

Code Words needs 4 people although I have heard there is a version (code words Duet) you can play with two people.

I am over Cards Against Humanity, and got bored of Cranium. Like charades and Pictionary, articulate and taboo, revolution, scattergories, balderdash, things in a box, rainbow rage, exploding kittens.

@SchrodingersImmigrant:

DH and I play Revolution as a pair, though you can play with up to four.

As a pair we also play Scrabble, Monopoly Deal, a card game called SkipBo, Speed (card game), Rummikub (one of my favourites), Mastermind, Dobble, Bananagrams,

TheGoogleMum · 28/12/2020 14:32

I dont think every family plays but its pretty common for families over Christmas. Personally I love a board game any time of year! I got some new board games for Christmas and was delighted and got to play with my husband in the evening

stayathomer · 28/12/2020 14:54

We live for Risk (thought I would hate it but it'sfantastic once you get the rules!), ludo, Articulate and Labrynth here. Every house I know play a lot of board games!

pinkdragons · 28/12/2020 14:54

Jenga, pick up sticks, guess who and Articulate junior are the popular ones here.

I never used to be very interested but since lockdown... nothing else to do

pinkdragons · 28/12/2020 14:55

Also dominos.

Marmite27 · 28/12/2020 15:06

Mine are only 3 and 5, but we have gruffalo dobble and uno on the dining room table at the moment along with wind up Santa’s for racing and a box of after eights

MegaClutterSlut · 28/12/2020 15:14

We play games on boxing day as too busy running around Christmas day. I don't particularly like board games but suck it up as everyone else does. We tend to play monopoly, go for broke, lego games etc

tierthreetwoone · 28/12/2020 15:37

We love board games!
Played scrabble, articulate. Gutterhead (interesting with parents and teenagers ), sorry, frustration
And also lots of card games!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 28/12/2020 15:44

Dc2 watched Jumanji at school and did a piece of writing about it and enjoyed it so much they asked for it for Christmas. We don't play board games much at all but we played it several times on Xmas day and Boxing day and it was a lot of fun.

Lex345 · 28/12/2020 15:56

We love board games here too! We have Yahtzee, Scrabble, Monopoly (children love it, we tolerate it), charades, pictionary, chess, draughts, trivial pursuit, frustration, connect 4, colourbrain, payday, card games, dominoes, boggle, mathable, Kerplunk, Mousetrap, Buckaroo, Pointless... probably others tucked away we are just about to play dungeons and dragons, which is new for us and I am really looking forward to it. Taskmaster is a lot of fun, that is another new edition this year. I don't think I have ever played Risk, that might be one for next year!

SpiderGwen · 28/12/2020 15:57

Sorry, OP, it's a huge part of Christmas for many UK families.

I used to hate board games (and at this exact moment am sitting alongside the rest of the family who are playing bloody Monopoly). However, there are so many much better games around now than the old classics.

We like Pandemic, Ticket To Ride, Just One, Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Forbidden Island/Desert, Linkee, Munchkin, Exploding Kittens, A Shot In the Dark etc.

merlotormalbec · 28/12/2020 16:27

Love board games. Don't really know how you can't like them as there's a lot of different ones!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 28/12/2020 16:58

Thank you @Grumpasaurus and @whereverigoddamnlike
We got scrabble already. Ha and the dominoes someone mentioned. Also different types of cards and some classics.

I am keeping all the suggestions in a note for future purchases!

sbhydrogen · 28/12/2020 17:03

I love board games and play them fairly regularly but I've never played them at Christmas (except for Monopoly in 2014).

Tomcullenisahero · 28/12/2020 17:08

I really like Carcassonne, it was given to us as a Christmas present a few years back and it's fab. I would never have picked this myself so I'm glad we got it as a present.
Our family favourites are Monopoly, Game of Life, Rapidough (hilarious) and Articulate.

kungfupannda · 28/12/2020 17:16

We play a lot of board games and have a big collection. Not Monopoly though!

Favourites:

Ticket To Ride
Mysterium
Cluedo
Castle Panic
Labyrinth
Lattice
Quirkle
Risk
Dixit
The Climbers
7 Wonders
Azul
Ravine
The Mind
Bandido
Pandemic
Exploding Kittens
Quoridor

We've got a few more for Christmas which we haven't tried yet.

TheSunIsStillShining · 28/12/2020 17:30

Not from the UK.
My parents hosted Risk weekends when I was a kid some times and all the kids could stay up as long as we wanted because they were playing :) Fab 80s...

We have more than 58 board games and yes, we play all year round, not just xmas.

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 28/12/2020 17:55

Oh I forgot about the Forbidden Island/Desert/Sky games. And Jaipur. We have them too, different shelf so couldn't see them. I don't think DH and I have actually won Forbidden Desert yet!
