Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

Ballstothis148 · 28/12/2020 00:24

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

@Ballstothis148

shes a lot more popular than you for one thing, and makes plenty of money out of appealing to a lot of people

I don’t think she’s that popular anymore...

In fairness, there's a few people on this thread who are so in awe of her and her 'post baby body' (apparently that's a massive achievement provoking bitter envy in all women except them) that they'll happily overlook her elaborate fake persona and merrily insult any woman who calls her out on it.

Which is ironic given that they're busy telling others to 'be kind' and suggesting that any woman who doesn't share their adoration for the yoga teacher once known as Hilary Haywood Thomas is a jealous bitch. I guess the only women worthy of unconditional 'kindness' are self-promoting 'celebrities' who don't know or care that these 'fans' exist.

Nowaynothappening · 29/12/2020 18:16

They met 10 years ago when Alec was in his fifties, divorced, career was fairly down and out and his daughter didn’t really speak to him at that point. Along comes a beautiful, young, ‘exotic’ yoga instructor from Spain who doesn’t have a clue who he is because, well, she’s Spanish and ‘doesn’t follow pop culture’. Alec, who has had run ins with the paparazzi before, is all over this like a flash. She isn’t famous and she claims she doesn’t know who he is either. I imagine this is a wonderful thing as a famous person, quite refreshing almost. He falls head over heels, they’re married with a child within two years.

She has the rich and famous husband and the online attention that comes with it. Only downside is she has to keep up the pretence that she’s Spanish. Her parents did move there around the same time she met Alec so that made it more believable. I’m guessing she told Alec she was born there but the family split their time between USA and Spain. She speaks Spanish because her parents loved Spain so they went there often on holiday and decided to learn the language. Naming the kids Spanish names is perhaps far fetched but she had to maintain the Spanish thing somehow...

The only real mystery is how she wasn’t exposed sooner. If this happened in the U.K you can bet your bottom dollar old school friends would be selling the story to The Sun within days Grin.

Ballstothis148 · 29/12/2020 18:21

Oh in the UK you’d have the piss taken out of you day 3! Imagine going to your local and having to say I’m not Spanish after all.... I did say, we had a friend who spent six months in France and came back unable to shift a French accent Grin even though her French was rubbish! It is cosplay isn’t it? Oh and a friend who’s surname was literally “Bland” spun a whole tale about being part Scandinavian which turned out all false, it was so silly. It’s ok to be a Bland from Lancashire! You don’t need to be a Hilaria, just be yourself

Why would you get a flight between new york and toronto? barely worth the effort

Fizzydrinks123 · 29/12/2020 18:25

Green: "she's a lot more popular than you" "bitchfest" "jealousy"

Dooooo grow up. There's a big old world where people aren't jealous - the world I inhabit along with most other women; also men seem to happily be allowed to inhabit a world where every comment isn't deemed to be motivated by "jealousy".

What a horrid view of others motivations you have and can only assume you reveal far too much of yourself with your attempts to stir a reaction from others.

There are much wider issues at play in pretending to go along with lies (which go completely over your head and are clearly unable to grasp).

Jeez - shall I be "kind" and let you know that continually hurling abuse around and telling those same people to be "kind" makes you look like a proper, proper dimwit with no self-awareness.

It’s a nine hour drive or more. The flight is what? Two hours? Easy especially with VIP lounge and no queuing.

Because it would take 8 hours to drive.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 29/12/2020 18:29

Hilaria is an hilarious name though

Id get on train and not have to deal with the airport stress. That for me isnt worth the extra few hours gained.

Gurufloof · 29/12/2020 18:48

It's always seemed clear Hilaria is fragile

I knew nothing of her before this thread, didnt even know Baldwin had married a much younger woman and had lots of children, but if you think no one should take the piss because she is fragile then you are wrong. Such fragile people should not put themselves into the limelight by having a blog/instagram/ pick the media of choice.
I'm not particularly tough, so I dont try to make myself famous. I also dont lie about my history at all and definitely not to make myself look more interesting. Its juvenile behaviour, it is definitely fraudulent.

I wish her well, I hope she stays off the internet from now on if shes so fragile. I know this will blow over soon enough and will be picked over occassionally in the media every few years when theres not much else going on. But if she keeps her head down itll be fine.

user1471565182 · 29/12/2020 18:50

and no bloody way would it take 9 hours drive unless you're driving the whole way through a city

Ballstothis148 · 29/12/2020 18:51

Greenland I think at this point you should take your advice to be kind etc and reread your post.

Time to organise a mumsnet race from toronto to new york like victorian men used to do. Winner is the first one to the Baldwin's for sangria.

PurplePansy05 · 29/12/2020 18:59

The funniest thing on this thread are the holier than thou posters, the self-proclaimed moral compass of MN Grin. This has kept me entertained no end today as I'm lying here unable to do much feeling rubbish in my pregnancy.

Now, to the point. None of us are what you accuse us of. If there is any ongoing discussion it's not actually about HB. It's about your comments and it gets heated only because YOU stir it up on purpose making remarks about us that are untrue, unjustified and unkind. Double standards? Oh, yes. Shit stirrers? 100%. You're doing exactly what you're accusing others of, ie being drama-sucking hypocritical queens, which is excuse the pun, (h)ilarious Grin

Gurufloof · 29/12/2020 19:02

By the way, have you ever heard of Dunning-Kreuger effect
Yup, have you heard of the Streisand effect?

I really think this is someone who didn't intend to any harm, not some mass criminal mastermind

Agreed, no harm was intended, but the very act that she pulled off did in fact do harm, to actual Spanish born women. Who maybe could have taken hilarys place in those magazines or on those shows and made a living out of it. Said Spanish woman could be equally as beautiful, have as many children, not be married to whatsisface obviously.
I know this is not the trans debate but we rightly get pissed off at a man taking a womans spot in sports, because a woman trained hard for years, gave things up and then as she was about to take part a man came along and took that spot. That too is harm. And it's a harm to other women. Not a nice thing to do, certainly not being kind.

Fizzydrinks123 · 29/12/2020 19:03

Green - I should laugh at your frankly bizzare post, but unfortunately for you I just feel very, very sorry for you.

I know that's not the reaction you would hope for, sorry and all that.

Gurufloof · 29/12/2020 19:09

and no bloody way would it take 9 hours drive unless you're driving the whole way through a city

Its 500 miles, a plane ticket one way is about a hundred bucks, I know which I would prefer.

user1471565182 · 29/12/2020 19:21

The airport drives me mad. Few years ago I read that David James was going to commute by plane from Bristol to Newcastle to football training daily. Who could be arsed.

user1471565182 · 29/12/2020 19:23

The last few years people have noticably been crowbarring the Dunning-Kreuger effect into stuff in a 'must show the world I know about this fancily named thing' way.

He probably wouldn't be flying easyJet and going through all the checks and controls we normal people have to clear before getting on the plane.

No need to turn up 2 hours in advance if you're flying on a private commuter jet, you're driven straight to the tarmac and a car is waiting for you when you disembark. 15 minutes tops, excluding the actual flight.

EileenGC · 29/12/2020 19:32

As a side note, a few years ago I had to commute twice a week from London to Amsterdam. By plane - Eurostar extension didn't exist back then.

London City Airport meant I could get on the DLR at 17:00, be at the airport by 17:15 and the plane took off at 17:45. It would've taken me longer to get to St Pancras.

Flight was under an hour and I'd be out of the airport within 10 mins. Another 25 to reach the hotel. So the whole thing took a little over 2h.

user1471565182 · 29/12/2020 19:45

Yeah I know of people who commute to the middle east and stuff with weekends and when they tell me the timings it can make sense but I personally couldnt be doing with the arsing about. All about the money though isnt it.

Wheresmykimchi · 29/12/2020 19:50

I haven't RTFT . She has cleared this up - she grew up in Spain and considers herself Spanish and speaks both languages. No she isn't "Mentally ill" as many delightful people have said.

No different to what John Barrowman does.

She didn't grow up in Spain though. She grew up in Boston and went to Spain for holidays, like millions of Brits do every year. Doesn't make them Spanish.
