Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

Ballstothis148 · 28/12/2020 00:24

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

It's wierd. That's why it's all over newslite - it's just a feckin' odd thing to do.

Maybe it's clever self-marketing or mental illness or nostalgia for her nannies gone mad. Or attention-seeking. Or a result of low self esteem. Or just playacting and no one ever told her to pack it in.

Who knows.

But it's wierd. And it's okay for lots and lots of people to think so. And comment. And say, damn, that woman has issues.

Yeah ... if self-i.d. can overwrite biological sex, then why not nationality? Race? Cultural background?

14ScottsRoad · 28/12/2020 16:57

I always used to say as a joke that i self identified as a tall gorgeous scandi blonde [looks at size 18, 5 ft nothing figure in mirror]

I'm feeling slightly inspired by things. [semi joking]

although I might just take inspiraiton with lifestyle rather than taking on a full new persona.

froggywentacarolling · 28/12/2020 16:57

But she isn't "identifying" as Spanish.

She lied about her birthplace and her mother's nationality - very publicly and in a high profile repeated way.

That's the equivalent of a transwoman sending out a press release stating they were not trans, that they were in fact cis-female and had been born with a vagina and a uterus.

Identity has nothing to do with it.

CurbsideProphet · 28/12/2020 17:05

Lying about one's cultural identity is mocked when were not allowed to mention the sex of a human being anymore? Surely we must accept that everyone is whatever they say they are 🤔

PicsInRed · 28/12/2020 17:06

What a marvellous way to cap 2020. Here's to Hilaria🍷🇪🇸💃

Oh i know. I was making a joke about it.
froggywentacarolling · 28/12/2020 17:09

Oh sorry! A lot of people have made that argument seriously. Blush

14ScottsRoad · 28/12/2020 17:12

No not serious. :) I regularly fantasise about being someone else or something else.

She is a fool though if she thought she would get away with it in the age of the internet. I sort of wonder how stressful her inner life must have been waiting for the guillotine to drop.

14ScottsRoad · 28/12/2020 17:16

I'm australian and years ago we had an author called Helen Darville. She reinvented herself as Helen Demidenko and wrote a book ostensibly about her Nazi collaborator relatives that won loads of awards until she was outed.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Dale

I think it's too hard nowadays (especially if you are married to Alec baldwin!!!!) to maintain that fiction forever.

She's doing both.

She both identifies as Spanish and lied about her origins. She could have done the one without the other.

Sending out a press release declaring yourself female with a penis and a beard, is arguably equally untrue even if extremely politically incorrect to say so.

WhenPidgeonsCry · 28/12/2020 17:30

@Cherrysoup

Speaking a foreign language (i.e. one you learned as a second language, so that doesn't include raised bilingual or trilingual since birth) without an accent IS hard

For some, not for all. Let’s not generalise.

That makes no sense. It's totally fine to acknowledge that some things are objectively difficult. Otherwise you could never say anything is hard, because there's always someone that doesn't find it so. i.e.:

Running 100m in less than 10 seconds is hard.

Not for all! Don't generalise!

Letthemeatcakeagain · 28/12/2020 17:33

@Alondra so if you learn a language as a child then you are the nationality of that accent?? Get a grip!!!!

YouSetTheTone · 28/12/2020 17:35

@froggywentacarolling a lot of people have made that point seriously because it is a serious point.

Hilaria Baldwin has, for whatever reason, claimed that she is Spanish. She isn’t Spanish and has never been Spanish. She has been largely mocked for this on social media and quite a few people have made the point that when some men claim they are women this is often lauded as brave and authentic.

If I say I’m Spanish because I feel Spanish why won’t the Spanish government give me a passport? Can I take them to court for denying my human rights and my authentic self?

Sedona123 · 28/12/2020 17:40

I feel sad for her kids. At some point (school gossip or google search) they're going to find out that their Mom has told a massive pack of lies since before they were born. The eldest is maybe 6, so old enough to remember? I would guess that "Hilaria" has brought them all up telling them that the reason that she speaks Spanish to them, and that they all have Spanish names, is because she's Spanish? Hopefully her lies are only on Instagram, and she hasn't been lying to her kids too.

Why was the fwr thread on this deleted? I've been away for the afternoon

DynamoKev · 28/12/2020 17:42

Will she/they be able to get ethnicity re-assignment surgery?

froggywentacarolling · 28/12/2020 17:43

a lot of people have made that point seriously because it is a serious point.

No it isn't.

A minor sleb trying to get attention by lying that she was born in a foreign country has nothing to do with trans issues and nothing to do with "identifying" as anything, since HB does not "identify" as Spanish, she simply invented details of her past for commercial gain.

froggywentacarolling · 28/12/2020 17:44

But this is MN so you can't even ask why your Victoria Sponge cake sank without someone coming along and asking why didn't your sponge just identify as a non-sunken cake.

You can't say anything on MN without people making it All About Trans.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 17:45

But why is one utterly ridiculous while the other is brave and stunning and should be affirmed at every point?

How do you know? I thought the current orthodoxy was to take people as they say they are #nodebate

@StealthPolarBear

Because one only affects women and no one cares about them
StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 17:49

I'll hold my hands up as one of the posters who could make a thread about traffic jams on the m1 about trans. I am.
I find the disingenuity between the vast majority of the population (including mners) using the terms man and woman unselfconsciously and on the assumption that everyone understands what they mean (as we all did twenty years ago) and then the trans narrative that we've apparently all bought into, that you can't assume someone's gender and must affirm way they say even when it's clearly claptrap, highly frustrating.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 17:51

The op talks about "this woman"
Not a single person has asked how the op knows hilaria identifies as a woman.
And yet on other threads we must all neve assume someone's gender etc and make sure we use gender neutral pronouns at all times. I find the whole thing an absolute pile of steaming claptrap and came bwlive how many intelligent, educated people have bought into this horse shit.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 17:53

All that said, I'd like to make a point that I do not have a problem with individuals. Wear what you want, identify as you want. Just ensure sex based rights and don't ask me to deny basic biology
