Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

Spain says thanks, but no thanks.

Ellmau · 28/12/2020 12:16

Maybe she had a succession of Spanish nannies and was brought up bilingual in Boston...

Her father's degree was in Spanish, it's not improbable that loving the language and culture himself he spoke Spanish to the children growing up.

froggywentacarolling · 28/12/2020 12:18

Why are people so invested in defending a D-list celeb who got busted telling absolute whopping porkie pies? Who only removed the false statement "Hilaria Baldwin was born in Majorca" from her official bio yesterday?

Beefcurtains79 · 28/12/2020 12:19

Alec must have known it’s bullshit, even if she just had to keep up the lie at first- he must have met her totally English parents at the wedding?

ragged · 28/12/2020 12:21

Did the Baldwins seriously produce 5 children in < 5 years?

He's a brave guy to do that at his age (b. 1958).

I've sometimes thought about telling pest strangers I was Mexican because I have a lot of Mexican connections -- but not thought to sell my whole self-lifestyle-brand that way on a daily basis. I wonder if the publicity will help or hinder HB. Maybe this big revelation is all one big publicity stunt. She'll be on the talk show circuit next, celebrity island, etc.

ComDummings · 28/12/2020 12:21

The whole thing is bizarre, her accent comes and goes. One minute she sounds American the next she forgets the word cucumber in English. Very weird woman with major issues.

goldielockdown2 · 28/12/2020 12:24

How strange, I've never thought she was Spanish lol. She's bilingual, like many people are.

Annasgirl · 28/12/2020 12:26

@Summerdayshaze

She’s a Spanish person born in the wrong country. Imagine how awful that must feel. I think she’s being very brave. Especially after she got deadnamed.
Post of the day!

Because she's a human being, who also has feelings, and the trend of destroying people through trial by sm is revolting.

God knows, some people are just really sycophantic about famous people? Some posters might think it makes them look superior/high brow to defend her?
Also, most of them have not even done the most basic research on this story, one google tells you she certainly didn’t grow up in Spain or have a Spanish parent, yet most of her defenders are embarrassingly claiming otherwise.

I am appauled and discusted by all the hate!!! You are nothing but a bunch of SERFS!!!

I have reported you all to the West Yorkshire Police Hate Crime Unit. They are arresting Justine as we speak and are coming for you all next.

I'm off now to orchestrate a Twitter pile-on of paella and chorizo manufacturers until they pull all their advertising from Mumsnet!!!

JanewaysBun · 28/12/2020 12:35

She seems to have embellished but maybe a similar situation to Gillian Anderson. Gillian was born in the US but lived in the UK from the time she could talk to about 12 so had a really strong English accent, then adopted an American one in the US to fit in but when she is in the UK speaks with the English accent (she actually mostly lives here now). Although GA never pretended to be actually English but says she spent her childhood there

He is an angry Baldwin. It takes one wack job to know one... water finds its own level, etc.

I don't think people are defending her in the sense you seem to think. What most posters are trying to show is the utter hypocrisy of society and the media.

Here we have a woman saying she's Spainish, and living her life as if she is. Whatever her reasons for doing so, she's been "exposed" as liar. Society and media are dragging her over the coals.

However, when a man declares himself to be a woman society and media (for the most part) applaud them. Call them brave and demand they are accepted as a woman. Anyone who says otherwise, at the very least is called transphobic and attacked verbally.

So while we must accept men can become women and that thier rights as woman override the rights of any woman born female, someone saying they are Spanish is unacceptable.

What's the difference between identifying as a different nationally to the one you are born and identifying as a different sex to the one you were born?

Why are we accepting one and not another. Also why are so many people on this thread unable to see this hypnosis.

froggywentacarolling · 28/12/2020 12:40

Because she's a human being, who also has feelings, and the trend of destroying people through trial by sm is revolting.

So if someone tells a huge lie, in a very public forum, for the purpose of boosting their career and for financial gain - and it's exposed as a lie - everyone should just ignore it because her poor ickle feelings might be hurt?

She isn't being "destroyed." No one is sending her death threads. No one is sending her rape threats. She hasn't been "cancelled." She hasn't, as far as I know, lost any work.

It's literally just people pointing out factually correct information, and mocking her for lying.

The idea that we should turn a blind eye to outright lies (when the culture of lying and fake news has caused so much damage, both in the culture of lies created by Trump presidency, and particularly this year during COVID with the spread of pandemic-related fake news) because pointing out that a lie is a lie is apparently "trial by social media" - that we should prioritise avoiding hurt feelings over objective truth - is extremely dangerous.

Kaliorphic · 28/12/2020 12:43

It's literally just people pointing out factually correct information, and mocking her for lying.

Yeah let's see how that looks in a week. It's only just started

froggywentacarolling · 28/12/2020 12:43

What's the difference between identifying as a different nationally to the one you are born and identifying as a different sex to the one you were born?

Well the people defending her are the ones insisting that avoiding hurting someone's feelings should take priority over objective fact, which is straight out of page 1 of the TRA handbook.

Besides there's a huge difference between flat out lying, and stating that you "identify" as something. A more accurate comparison would be a biological male lying that he was biologically female and pretending to have been born with a vagina and a uterus.

TheVanguardSix · 28/12/2020 12:47

All that's happening here is she's exposed herself for the utter toolbox we've all suspected her of being for years now. She's done it to herself.

zigaziga · 28/12/2020 12:48

I am also over invested in this. Blame Tier 4, the weird time after Christmas, I don’t know... but I am.
I honestly was under the impression that she was completely Spanish and had broken English. It’s bizarre.

I know people who studied languages at university and did their year abroad and became very French or Spanish for a while. It was annoying then but I assume they have remembered that they are not remotely French or Spanish by now.
One did start using a Spanish version of their name actually, so similar to Hilary/ Hilaria... I wonder if she still uses it Grin

goldielockdown2 · 28/12/2020 12:48

I'm wondering if people mock me behind my back now and think I'm not an authentic person because I was raised speaking two languages:/

AbbeyBelfast · 28/12/2020 12:48

I love Mexican food, I can speak a little Spanish and I've holidayed in Mexico a couple times...

So I'm gonna name my kids Josè and Pedro and we will all be wearing sombreros from now on. Thanks for understanding.

TheVanguardSix · 28/12/2020 12:48

Oh dear, let me rewrite my sentence...

All that's happening here is she's exposed herself AS the utter toolbox we've all suspected her of being for years now.

FuckOffDailyFailure · 28/12/2020 12:49

I actually have met people IRL who do this sort of thing. She just got 'outed' as not Spanish more publicly than other people.
