Or is Clinique 72 hour moisture surge a SHAM

Just that really.

I've been given the most enormous tub of Clinique Moisture Surge for Christmas. Its HUGE. Its not something I would normally use or ask for but have given it a go. All investigations suggested this is a moisturizer, potentially a hydrating mask.

But...nothing. My skin soaks it up like water and continues to look sahara-esque. I'm on my third coating and whilst DP is delighted because he mistakenly thinks my repeated use must mean I love it, in truth Im completely baffled by its popularity.

Anyone else disappointed with this? Do you love it and maybe I'm using it incorrectly. Or do you have any other products you'd issue a DO NOT BUY warning on? Grin

I prefer the intense version personally for winter. The one you have is honestly excellent, but maybe better suited as a sprin/summer moisturiser depending on your skin type

alex1889 · 27/12/2020 13:29

Not sure it's a sham but I got a small tube in my Clinique advent calendar and not sure if it's an everyday moisturiser or what?! What is it supposed to be used for?!

Blueemeraldagain · 27/12/2020 13:32

I am no skincare expert but I would imagine if your skin is still soaking it up then the cream is helping somehow....

6hoursawayfromdisaster · 27/12/2020 13:37

Im in my 4th coat and have given up. MrsDeadlock I think you're right and its too light for winter skin.

Blueemeraldagain quite the opposite- its really having little to no effect until the 4th coat. For comparison my skin would normally look/feel this way after one layer of my normal moisturizer

alex1889 I had the same reaction. I think its a moisturizer but can also be applied more heavily as a mask, or then applied over makeup as a kind of moisture top up/add sheen

It's meant to go under your moisturiser i believe. Like you would a serum.

6hoursawayfromdisaster · 27/12/2020 14:05

Laiste Ah! That would explain a lot.

unfortunateevents · 27/12/2020 14:05

This suggests that your skin is completely dehyrated and it's going to take more than 48 hours for this to work?

Laiste · 27/12/2020 14:07

Is it still pale pink wobbly stuff? Like jelly?

waydownwego · 27/12/2020 14:08

If you don't want it, I'll have it. That stuff is seriously expensive.

I honestly don't know anyone IRL who wouldn't be grateful for a giant pot of it!

TheKeatingFive · 27/12/2020 14:09

I love it 😍

It absorbs very well though, it doesn’t leave an obvious residue

Indecisive12 · 27/12/2020 14:09

I use it as my spring/summer moisturiser and love it. I’ve tried lots but this is my favourite. When you say you’re on your 4th coating what are you looking for? It’s supposed to sink in rather than sit on your face.

80sColourfulChristmas · 27/12/2020 14:09

Perhaps it's more of a long term results product???

Laiste · 27/12/2020 14:10

I was going to say that waydownwego Grin

I used to work for clinique and adored their stuff particularly Moisture Surge. Used to recommend it to everyone and sold bucket loads of it. I can't afford it any more and wondered if it was still the same texture. Used to smell lovely as well.

ImBoredAgain · 27/12/2020 14:12

I love it, used it for years and keep trying other recommendations every now and then but always go back to the Clinique one

MispyM · 27/12/2020 14:12

Put a more occlusive layer over it and see whether you still don't like it.

6hoursawayfromdisaster · 27/12/2020 14:19

Yes, its like a pale pink gel. I suppose I expected it to either make my skin seem immediately supple and soft like my usual moisturizer, or perhaps sit like more of a balm/mask like my favourite drunken elephant balm. I do have dry skin so it could be that it works wonders for those with "normal" type skin and I'm just used to more specialist products maybe?

Im going to try it as both a kind of serum tomorrow, and then perhaps as a mask later in the week - the amount of positive reviews makes me sure the problem must be me Grin

I’d maybe wait for spring. Honestly it’s fantastic over serums and allows spf to absorb and leaves my skin lovely. But it’s not enough for my dry winter skin so it’s at the back of my shelf for now. It’s seriously good in warm, humid weather

Laiste · 27/12/2020 14:27

It's perfect for you if you have dry skin. It's great on most skin types as it is not greasy.

There are ingredients in most moisturisers which are specifically designed to leave the 'moisturised' feel. Moisture Surge doesn't have this, it is designed literally to deliver tons of moisture to your skin. Your usual moisturiser will give you the 'comfortable skin' feel you are used to once you put it over the top of MS.

Grin I MISS WORKING FOR CLINIQUE!
GwendolineWindowlene · 27/12/2020 14:33

What’s your usual moisturiser, OP?

SickToDeathOfThis · 27/12/2020 14:33

I love it. My skin is so temperamental so I love that it doesn’t get icky

6hoursawayfromdisaster · 27/12/2020 14:33

Ok, I'm def going to layer it with my normal moisturizer tomorrow. Its totally possible I'm just so used to that kind of product finish that I'm overlooking the actual results. Then, if I'm still not in love I'll pop it in the cupboard and wait a few months.

I used to love that stuff. Back when I had money. I would use it as a base later and then once all my makeup was on I would add a top coat too. Like lacquering a bench

GingerBreadNurse · 27/12/2020 14:39

I was most disappointed when I discovered that topical moisturiser creams don’t really add moisture, they just lock in what we already have. Drinking 2/2.5 litres of water a day isn’t as easy peasy as putting some nice face creams on!

Wouldn't it kind of wipe foundation etc off if you rubbed it in on top?
