To ask if a Peleton is worth the money?

Frustratedbypossiblescammers · 27/12/2020 00:00

I’m thinking of getting a Peleton treadmill for my husband’s upcoming 40th birthday. We are both quite unfit but are also short of time, so I’m hoping it will make us get much better at fitting in exercise.

Has anyone tried either the treadmill or the bike, and are they worth the extra money, in your opinion?

Thousands of pounds for basically an exercise bike. Don't do it!

SauvignonGrower · 27/12/2020 00:10

Oooo... I have no views but interested in responses. I've had other areas of my life where apps have helped change behavior so have been wondering whether peloton would work for me.

SimplyRadishing · 27/12/2020 00:13

Honestly get a good PT instead

If you are really mad for one look at the offers on digme (still a rip off but less terrible)

Plonque · 27/12/2020 00:14

It is extortionate, they try to justify the expense with all the "support" and training apps/videos/forums etc side of it but YouTube is full of very good free content on every type of exercise imaginable, and there are millions of similar free groups to join on Facebook/other social media.

lioncitygirl · 27/12/2020 00:16

I have a friend who has it - says it’s not better than a normal exercise bike and a waste of money

We love ours! (Bike)

PizzaForOne · 27/12/2020 00:19

You could get a regular exercise bike and set it up in front of a smart TV/laptop/mounted tablet or phone to watch YouTube spinning classes on for much less

DimidDavilby · 27/12/2020 00:21

If you have endless money to burn why not? Otherwise fuck no they are extortionate.

Crunched · 27/12/2020 00:22

This may be a useful read.
Mine is arriving next week.

My friend has the bike and become much stronger and fitter this year but it’s only as good as the time and commitment you give to it. I have a PT as I need someone else to motivate me. Different things work for different people.

LimitIsUp · 27/12/2020 00:24

I think it's a bit more than "just an exercise bike". Read some user reviews - most seem to love it, although there is disquiet recently over the 3 months + wait time for delivery. I'm thinking of getting one too

And folks - whether it's extortionate or not depends upon personal circumstances

KenAdams · 27/12/2020 00:39

I don't think so no, I have the app and a cheap bike that I think is so much better value. I'd do the same for the tread.

CarHire101 · 27/12/2020 01:24

Op is asking about the tread- very different from the bike!

Op I’m also interested and have seen the tread in real life. It looks very very slick and what I love about it is the large touch screen and knobs for speed and incline which are very easy to use and adjust whilst training. My only criticism is it does not come with free mode which many of the classes use! I can’t say I’ve had a tread before to compare but it is certainly more superior to big standard gym treads. If you get the peloton equipment you have access to all the classes and the leaderboard do you can be competitive.

I think it depends if it’s your first thing to get for then I’m not sure if it is where I would start and certainly investing in a good PT or class maybe better to learn how to train. For someone who is into fitness (I’ve been training doing HITT since 2010) it can be a good way to break into being more independent/at home training. Currently I do peloton tread boitcamp classes, peloton strength, peloton runs and les mills grit and love it. I use the app with gym equipment and love the versatility of what I do. I’m only interested in the tread to get more interactive and compete on the leaderboard. I think the only other thing I would like to do is more freestyle strength to keep toning.

user1471457751 · 27/12/2020 01:32

Does he actually want one? It seems to be more of a present for yourself.

coldwaterfeed · 27/12/2020 01:54

Looks like a gimmick to me.

I would either

  • get normal exercise machine and use free YouTube videos workouts to spur you on
  • get normal exercise machine and get a subscription to something like FIIT, which is monthly subscription service. (£9.99).
TaraR2020 · 27/12/2020 01:58

Why not use a normal exercise bike bought secondhand and follow spin classes on YouTube?

coldwaterfeed · 27/12/2020 01:59

I literally just said that Tara

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 27/12/2020 02:33

My brother just got me one for Christmas (not so thinly veiled hint that I need to lose weight 🤣🤣). Not sure it is worth the money but will see. I'm yet to try it, still enjoying Christmas leftovers😊

NatMoz · 27/12/2020 05:57

Does your husband run outside?

The reason I ask is running/treadmill is the easiest mode of exercise as you can just run out of your front door compared to say the gym etc where you have to drive there, get changed, faff with your locker etc etc.

A treadmill or exercise bike at home is the slightly more efficient exercise mode as you don't have to leave the house so time saved is around the same.

If husband can't be bothered to exercise outside in the least time consuming way possible then is it likely he will use a treadmill?

I'm a runner as I'm lazy and can't be bothered with gyms. Running out of the front door is so much easier. I would consider a treadmill but HATE running on the spot, it's just awful and miserable. Never seen a treadmill running class before though but I am a run leader for a local amateur running club so understand the value of social interaction of some degree!

Done sport all my life. I understand none of this. Its like a different language. I feel like I'm doing something wrong in actually going outside on my own to run or cycle. I have no PT - I get top class coaching if needed through my local running club, where I also meet actual human beings. How do you ever develop any balance or discipline if you need all these artifical aids to fo something so simple?
ChasingRainbows19 · 27/12/2020 06:08

I’d buy a decent treadmill and get a phone/tablet holder and use free workouts on you tube or pay a subscription service.

I do this with a spin bike at home atm I’m using free you tube videos but I’ve used les mills.£10 a month. My bike isn’t gym standard but gives me resistance and I’m aware where I need to be from gym classes. I still get an effective workout.

However I can’t afford peloton prices so do mine on the cheap. Some love the company others not so much.

ChasingRainbows19 · 27/12/2020 06:15

@GreenlandTheMovie
Some of us can’t run or cycle outside. My body doesn’t like running and to be honest our weather is often not great for cycling especially right now. It’s great that you can do this but not all of us can.

Gyms wouldn’t exist if all people could exercise without help. Some need the machines or accessories such as bikes/treadmills/weights/swimming pool/classes

Some need a person like a PT to be there to encourage the best out of the exercise. It’s all good if it means people are moving more and are healthier as a consequence.
It doesn’t matter how we get there really.

Christ, what happens if you go outside? I'm watching a Danish series on Netflix right now called "The Rain", which means that people die if the toxic rain in Scandinavia lands on their skin. I'm assuming it's not like that, because I'm also a human being with the same skin, and it's possible for me, and I don't have any superpowers. I just put on a rain jacket and gloves, and change into dry clothes when I get back.

I'm not trying to criticise people, just pointing out that making exercise very complicated is not only expensive, you lose out on the non physical aspects of training, such as self motivation, self discipline, motivation, etc. And a Pelton indoor bike will do nothing for your balance or bike handling skills. So it's not giving the complete benefits of exercise, because training your own discipline is one of the biggest benefits of all. And it's one we all have to push through if we want to train indeoendently at some time.

springiscoming12 · 27/12/2020 06:53

I think it is completely worth it. The quality of the bike is fantastic and the classes are great too. We have had one for a few months and I can honestly say I’ve used it far more than I used to go to the gym. It’s so convenient having it at home and all my friends who have one use it regularly too.
I would have never been to a spinning class in the gym because I was always too afraid that it would be too hard but I’m completely hooked now.
