To ask if a Peleton is worth the money?

Frustratedbypossiblescammers · 27/12/2020 00:00

I’m thinking of getting a Peleton treadmill for my husband’s upcoming 40th birthday. We are both quite unfit but are also short of time, so I’m hoping it will make us get much better at fitting in exercise.

Has anyone tried either the treadmill or the bike, and are they worth the extra money, in your opinion?

@GreenlandTheMovie cos I need some exercise to do when the kids are in bed and I bought a turbo and it sounds like a jet engine taking off.

I run outside. I like it. In daylight. Not at night as I feel vulnerable.

And I don't want to socialise with others. I do a job where I spend all day talking to people. I want to be alone with my thoughts.

And also, different people like different stuff.

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 27/12/2020 09:43

No not worth the money you might as well get a better quality piece of equipment and a tablet. That sort of money on a PT might be worth it.

What sport do you actually do Zzizz?
Tyranttoddler · 27/12/2020 09:47

Greenland wtf 🤣 I agree that it's sufficient to go outside and exercise but you don't have to. Everyone can do things differently. Some people don't want to do this alone. I have no idea why you're being so strange and rude in your responses here but it's not coming off well.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 27/12/2020 09:53

If husband can't be bothered to exercise outside in the least time consuming way possible then is it likely he will use a treadmill?

This is spot on. Running is free - try the free version and establish that you like it /ate motivated to do it before spending £££££. Treadmills are the most boring, least motivating version of running there is.

rubydoobydoo · 27/12/2020 10:00

You could get a decent gym membership with access to all the equipment, classes and personal trainers for less (well maybe not in all areas of the UK at the moment but I'd still wait a bit!).

TwoMuchTwoYoung · 27/12/2020 10:00

The Peleton bike is brilliant so I imagine the tread will be just as good.
Buy one on a 30 day trial and return it if you don’t like it, they refund your money in 2 days.
Nothing to lose.
If you want £100 off accessories or gym gear feel free to use my referral code.

I have the bike and it’s been my lifeline this year. I don’t know how I’d have got through the year without it. I understand why people balk at the price for ‘just an exercise bike’ but the amount of content and the sheer variety of different classes and instructors is so different to anything you’d find on YouTube. I love that they have so many themed rides (currently working my way through all the Christmas ones!) and there’s always something to suit my mood, unlike my old spin class where the instructor played exactly the same music every week. You feel like you get to know the different instructors a bit and you get a feel for who you ‘need’ on a particular day (some are good for cheering me up, some are lovely and chilled, some I know are going to make me work really really hard!)

I would get the Tread in a heartbeat if I had room for it but sadly I don’t. I’ve done a few of the treadmill classes on my phone using a normal treadmill at the gym and it works ok but you miss out on having your stats and your progress recorded so you can’t race against your own PB (which I do a lot on the bike) and sometimes it’s hard to match your settings to what the instructor calls out on his/her tread.

Peloton also has outdoor running classes btw and I do those all the time!

Frustratedbypossiblescammers · 27/12/2020 10:08

Thanks all, some really useful points here. I have told my husband rather than trying to keep it a surprise and he’s very keen, so we are going to draw up a list of pros and cons for:

Tread
Bike
Cheaper or rented non Peleton equipment for a few months first to see how we get on

Both of us used to be very fit, but having three young kids and working has meant that finding time for exercise has been really hard, so I think having some indoor equipment will help us get back into it when the kids are in bed or we can take turns at the weekend!

Thanks in particular to the very kind PP who offered the DM for more info; if we do go for it, I will message you Smile

If you’re seriously considering it then I suggest you get the free trial of the app first and have a browse through some of the classes so you can get a feel for whether you like what’s on offer. You could try out some of the outdoor running classes or some of the strength/cardio/yoga etc so that you get to know a few instructors Smile

It's mainly those who don't have a peloton that advise you they're rubbish! Grin

If you can afford it then yes - they're the best out there. We've had ours about 15 months now and it's been in constant use

My code HC2QKE will get you £100 off if you - or anyone else reading this - decides to get one. I know it's not much but all helps . In the interests of transparency, I get some spends on the apparel shop

LenaBlack · 27/12/2020 10:18

I had the peloton bike. Used it a bit but much much less than I thought I would. Got it on finance so with the £40 subscription you need to have to access all the classes I was paying £100 per month.
It's a brilliant bike but it won't magically motivate you to use it...It also huge, needs a lot of space.
I ended up selling it after a year. It sold very quickly for 80% of the original price so at least it holds value.

FirewomanSam · 27/12/2020 12:58

It's mainly those who don't have a peloton that advise you they're rubbish!

Yes, this. Most people who have a Peloton are used to repeatedly hearing ‘why don’t you just get a bike and ride outside?’ as if it’s remotely the same thing! Grin

Some of the lesser-known benefits of the Peloton include getting an excellent musical education! You can ‘like’ songs as they come up and get them added to an Apple/Spotify playlist, so my music library has grown massively since I started using it. They have special rides for Black History Month, Latinx History Month etc which are always really interesting. I ‘discovered’ K-pop after doing a few of the rides for Asian Heritage month.

They also did some amazing classes around the Black Lives Matter movement which I found very powerful. Oh and the Beyoncé series was AMAZING.

daisychain01 · 27/12/2020 13:29

The thing that's held me back is the thought that when I get back to doing 3 spin classes a week, swimming 1-2 times a week and then outdoor cycling at the weekends, will I have a very expensive Peleton sitting in the garage not being used.

Treadmills are the most boring, least motivating version of running there is

I have to agree with this. I could do up to 90 min running without any problem, but I found treadmills a soul-destroying experience. Strangely enough not so with studio spin classes, which I put down to having some great music on, a good spin instructor giving clear prompts on speed and cycle pressure, plus enjoying the company of my friends. Obviously that isn't happening atm but it will return before too long. My aerobic fitness really improved with 45 min spin! Outdoors you can't simulate the sprint effect of being on a static bike.

CarHire101 · 27/12/2020 13:32

@GreenlandTheMovie

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!
I don’t really have time to explain but to keep it simple I love variety- I don’t spend much either- currently the apps I use are 12:99 per month and 11:99 per month. My gym membership is £10 per month- this might be expensive for some understand but it’s fine for me. There are also a lot of free workouts online. I’m interested in buying the tread because when I do my endurance runs and treadmill boot camps it’s actually exhausting and tough so I know I will get good use out if it- bare in mind I only do it for 30-45 mins a day. I honestly just really enjoy exercise/fitness and sport.

CarHire101 · 27/12/2020 13:35

I’m also not sure what your issue is with what I do? Have you not heard of the phrase each to their own? Also I do interact with other people if I do one of my classes as I have done for years. As o said I’m trying to find new ways of working out from home hence why I’m interested in the tread.

CarHire101 · 27/12/2020 13:47

Yes @LuciaLemon I agree it’s usually people who don’t have it who seem to know all about it.

I’ve been using peloton app and love it, I use gyms and love it, I use free yoga on YouTube love it, I run outdoors/cross country runs love it, I do body weight training as HITT at home love it- basically I like variety and (without boasting) my body tone proves it... I basically love fitness and felt qualified to give op my viewpoint though Greenland thinks otherwise lol.

danadas · 27/12/2020 14:11

I probably don't have the space for one until we make our garage leakproof but it sounds ideal for someone like me new to exercise who is far too self conscious to exercise outdoors or step foot in a gym. It isn't easy to do outdoor exercise if you work opposite shifts and have young children. That was a real barrier when mine were younger. Once you know what you are doing I am guessing you have more options.

lu9months · 27/12/2020 15:27

if you decide against it and want a cheaper option, i signed up at first lockdown to FIIT , which i find really good. on demand classes of all sorts and levels, and about £20 a month. i do 2 or 3 classes a week and enjoy changing it up

Rhdlj · 27/12/2020 15:42

I use Spinstream - it’s £5.99 a month and you just use your own bike. I bought a spin bike off eBay for a couple of hundred quid. Much better value and I really enjoy the classes.

reenon · 27/12/2020 16:12

I've got the bike. I love it. Best thing I've spent my money on in 2020. I do the live classes as well as challenges, there are loads of FB groups for the challenges. I use it nearly every day. I also use the app for yoga and strength classes.

I've still got my gym membership... So I do the gym 3 x week (when it's open...) then the bike the rest of the time... Plus a bit of running outside.

I've done a few peloton treadmill classes using the app on one of the gym treads. They are tough!

I think if I had the choice of the tread and the bike I'd still choose the bike. I can run outside for free plus I won't give up my gym membership so can use the treadmills there. The peloton bike community is fab especially some of the British lady groups.
