To ask if a Peleton is worth the money?

I’m thinking of getting a Peleton treadmill for my husband’s upcoming 40th birthday. We are both quite unfit but are also short of time, so I’m hoping it will make us get much better at fitting in exercise.

Has anyone tried either the treadmill or the bike, and are they worth the extra money, in your opinion?

Nope.
You can get any bike or replication of what they sell a 1/3 of the price and the videos are all on YouTube.

My husband has one and loves it. I’m meh, but then I don’t really like cycling anyway. Personally, I prefer doing the Les Mills classes, not that I do them.

They have a month trial, so you can send it back if you don’t totally love it.

We love ours! DM me if you want a referral code for £100 towards accessories

I spent ages looking at these, in the end bought a decent spin bike on Amazon for £450 and pay £12 a month for the peloton app instead. So glad I did it that way as the Peloton bike is pricey enough and then they charge you the £40(?) a month for the app, which essentially just gets you a live leaderboard!

HarrietOh · 27/12/2020 16:55

Oh and wahoo sensors for my spin bike so I know my cadence and speed.

I agree with Greenland. A turbo trainer and a bike are a much better idea. You may even get out on the bike in the summer. I am having great fun atm with my 8yr old DS we cycle 10km everyday he absolutely lives it and I am getting fit too. The weather is fine.

Get a decent treadmill and a foot pod (a RUNN or some Garmin watches can work) and hook your phone/tablet/PC up to Zwift. The running part of Zwift is free. Personally I love it. I have a Stryd foot pod (expensive though), and a Reebok ZR10 treadmill. I still run outside, but this time of year the treadmill is great, especially with kids (you can use it when they are in bed).

It gets you a bit more than that especially if you do the Powerzone training but I agree that a separate bike plus the app is a great solution if you don’t want to spend so much on a bike. I thought about doing it that way but I know myself and I knew that if I did that, it would only be a matter of time until I resented not having the full kit, so I just went for it in the end. I’ve had it well over a year and no regrets here!

I think most of the cost of the bike (and the tread, for that matter) is because of the massive screen that comes attached but I do also find the Peloton bike really sturdy and quiet compared to other models.

I used to go to spin classes x3 a week - worked in the west end of london and spend £100 a month just on spin studio classes!
I've been going to spin classes since 2003 even through pregnancy.
The peloton was worth it for me but the classes that come with it - yoga (which I also used to fork out for and Pilates) means it's worth every Penny!
I no longer have to get up at 5.30 to go into the city to do a 7am class.
I'm done by 6.30 on a good morning.

HousewifeNumber1 · 27/12/2020 18:28

I should add the company I used to work for subsidised the classes and my husband bought me the bike for my 50th birthday.
But mentally it's helped me get through a really hard time - a relative killed them selves and exercise helps. A lot.

SunshineShorts · 27/12/2020 19:08

I only have experience of the bike which I see you have also asked about. I have the bike plus and it’s the best purchase I’ve ever made - worth every penny. It’s been absolutely perfect for me, have had it for 12 weeks and used it about 4 times a week since. Never gets boring because there’s such a variety of classes, instructors and ride types. And it’s not just for cycling, there’s strength classes, core, yoga, Pilates, barre, bootcamp and more. I push myself far harder than I ever have at the gym or in PT sessions. Can’t recommend it enough - I haven’t had any experience of the tread (yet!) but it does look amazing

SuePreem · 27/12/2020 19:13

I have found it worth the money - it's been a lifesaver during lockdown, and I used it most days. Also love the app when I can do other exercises too.

I also run outside and have a proper bike.

I am slightly addicted to it tbh. I had a set of turbo rollers and never used them - found zwift too boring.

I wouldn't buy a tread as I like running outside (even if I had the space). I do like yoga classes too, but can't go at the moment (do the ones on the app instead) but probably will add that to the mix once gyms are back open.

Oh I also meant to say join some of the FB groups and you'll see the constant stories about their terrible customer service which might be a major consideration for you.

CockapooMum · 03/01/2021 21:12

I've just ordered today and it's arriving on 22nd Feb. I've got a code if anyone orders one I'd love it if you'd use my code as we both get £100 off. My code is FQQTNK. Thanks
