To ask if you’ve got a name people say wrong do you correct them

Tellmelies65 · 24/12/2020 20:48

My two both have Arabic names that are often said wrong. I’ve asked them why they don’t correct people who say their names wrongs they have said they can’t be bothered anymore. Is this common that people give up correcting people? I have a name that’s very common so have never been in that position.

DD14 doesn't apparently. Her name isn't even particularly unusual but she's fed up of correcting now so just does with whatever. My name is incredibly common but I still get called other names by customers and to be honest I only correct them if they need to know my name as a reference, if it's in passing I let it go.

LuckyAmy1986 · 24/12/2020 20:55

I don’t correct my surname anymore; you get bored of doing it! I would of course if it was someone who was in my personal life but not at, for example, a doctors appointment or something.

RandomMess · 24/12/2020 20:56

When people shorten mine I correct them as it it REALLY bothers my like nails down a chalkboard.

I have tried to not mind but tbh I don't even realise it's my name.

Clockstop · 24/12/2020 20:58

I have a common name that people get wrong, and also shorten it wrong. It's annoying, I don't correct people but these people do go on my mental 'dead to me' list. It also makes me very very aware of making sure I get others' names correct.

ghislaine · 24/12/2020 20:59

Yes, I definitely do. The name people use instead of mine is spelled differently and sounds different. I really struggle to understand sometimes how it happens!

MyFavouritePlace · 24/12/2020 21:02

I've given up too. I don't have a common name so I am used to it. Made sure my kids have more usual names...

OrigamiOwl · 24/12/2020 21:02

I correct people the first time (I have a name with a common shortening) but if they are thick-skinned enough to not notice and take it on board I don't bother repeating myself.
People I came about know my name...

CarlottaValdez · 24/12/2020 21:02

Generally not no I don’t care that much. I worked for a Japanese company for a while and I have a name that most Japanese people can’t pronounce so I got used to it!

BrumBoo · 24/12/2020 21:02

My name always gets confused for another - think Katie becomes Kayleigh. Nightmare at school, as the teacher would shout 'Kayleigh' from the front of the room, and me not paying attention (as it's not my bloody name) got into trouble for it. It's too much bother to correct people these days, so if they don't get it after a few repetitions then I just don't bother.

Grasses · 24/12/2020 21:04

No I don't care. And if it's in a Starbucks type situation I just make up a name.

GazOnABender · 24/12/2020 21:06

Nope, nobody ever says it right but I never both to correct them anymore unless they ask 'have I said that right?'

GintyMcGinty · 24/12/2020 21:06

My real name gets shortened all the time. It's a rude or lazy presumption and I don't like it but heigh ho.

My first name and my surname are constantly spelled wrong too.

Namechangeme87 · 24/12/2020 21:07

Yes iv given up 😂 I can be with other people who know my name and someone else there who doesn’t know mr so well can say it wrong and even they won’t bat an eye any more .

I’d obviously correct someone if they were going to be a more permanent fixture in my life but other than that iv given up

I have literally had conversations that go “ oh ho my name is x “ “ pleased to meet you y” ffs

Namechangeme87 · 24/12/2020 21:07

Hi not ho 😂😂

ZoeTurtle · 24/12/2020 21:07

I don't correct people unless we're going to be spending a lot of time together. For a one off or occasional meeting, I don't really care.

PicaK · 24/12/2020 21:08

No. It always seems so rude!

PishFood · 24/12/2020 21:08

Some Arabic names are quite ‘throaty’ and it’s hard for people with an English accent to pronounce them properly. If someone corrected me on a name I would definitely make an effort to pronounce it how they do.

FoxInABox · 24/12/2020 21:08

I don’t correct my surname unless someone asks. It’s not even a particularly hard surname, and just has a different letter at the start compared to another surname which people normally get correct, but weirdly changing the first letters seems to mess with people’s brains Grin

OppsUpsSide · 24/12/2020 21:09

My surname is mispronounced all the time, to the point even when I do correct people they turn around and correct me!
Sometimes I bother, mostly I don’t.

NameChange84 · 24/12/2020 21:10

My name either gets shortened to a nickname I hate or changed to another name with the same letter. I really hate it but I’ve learned over the years to just let it go as people seem to think I’m being precious when I say, “actually it’s...” and I hate being made out to be precious more than I hate getting called the wrong name or the horrible nickname.

pinktransit · 24/12/2020 21:10

Mine gets mis spelt quite a lot - rather like Anne with an e versus Ann without an e (I have the e equivalent).
If it's by email it annoys me - my name is in the email, twice in the sign off. There's no excuse for not spelling it correctly. I'll let it go once or twice, and then spell their name incorrectly by missing the last letter off their name.
Dear Mik, or Dear Hanna normally works quite well :)

MadisonMontgomery · 24/12/2020 21:10

People often mispronounce my first name, and always mispronounce my surname. I correct them with my first name but I can’t be bothered with my surname!

Chanjer · 24/12/2020 21:12

My partner goes by the name everyone calls her, not her "real" name. It's what I call her. Some northerners and Irish people pronounce it correctly as their accent suits saying it.

Her cousins also have English pronunciation names and Tamil pronunciation names, which are the same names

I know another Tamil guy who's name is Nathan and correctly it's pronounced Nahthen, but he introduces himself now as Nathan because that's what most people call him

omg35 · 24/12/2020 21:13

I don't correct people anymore. I tend to go by a shortened version of my first name that people tend to find easier and name my children names from the top 100 list so they won't have to struggle

Welliesandpyjamas · 24/12/2020 21:13

I don't bother any more. Nice people will try hard to get it right and I appreciate it.
