Am I right to feel upset or AIBU?

All four members of my family have Covid. I am the only one with symptoms and I have never felt this ill ever. I have a very high temp 40.4, cough, aches, no sense of taste or smell and I feel dreadful. We are obviously self isolating and can’t go out. I asked my FIL if I could borrow his oxygen metre as my breathing is shallow, the kind you clip on the end of your finger. He said of course, I’ll leave it on your doorstep. A bit later he called DH to say my SIL had got it because her partner is very worried about Covid and uses it regularly and they weren’t prepared to hand it over. This is the same man who wouldn’t go for a rapid test before spending Christmas Day with the elderly in-laws. He is assuming that as my SIL qualifies for a weekly test if she is negative so is he. Meanwhile 3 of us actually with Covid and me having shallow breaths and struggling to get my breath whilst walking up the stairs don’t need it according to him. My 80 year old FIL braved town on Xmas Eve to try and get us one but couldn’t find one. I think he is cross. We have now ordered one but it doesn’t arrive until the 29th.

AIBU to be p*ed off that they wouldn’t let me have it when I’m struggling. It isn’t even theirs.

Your FIL should have got it from his daughter and said "they've actually got covid you drama fuckers, stop being twats"

Belepheron · 24/12/2020 20:05

Every day MN depresses me with the sagas of fucking selfishness. I'm sorry your family are so inadequate.

Minky37 · 24/12/2020 20:07

Yes, very selfish behaviour from the SIL.

HangOnToYourself · 24/12/2020 20:10

They are incredibly selfish! Arseholes.
I am concerned about your temperature, I'm not medically qualified but when I was admitted for pneumonia a few.years ago mine was 39 and they were very concerned about that

JillyCareful · 24/12/2020 20:14

What would the oxygen meter do for you?

Hope you all feel better soon.

B15Girl · 24/12/2020 20:19

Jillycareful it would tell me the oxygen levels in my blood and if it’s under 95 I should be worried. My breathing is laboured but I want to avoid going to hospital to get it checked if I can

If your breathing is that laboured that you are worried about it 111 and ask for advice, it might be they send a paramedic to check you over.
Covid is not something to be messed with and your sil is a twat

Iloveacurry · 24/12/2020 20:29

Very selfish. It’s not even theirs to keep.

LawnFever · 24/12/2020 20:31

They are massive twats Angry

If you feel that bad you need to call 111 and get medical advice though, not rely on this machine (or lack of one Angry)

Hope you’re all feeling better soon

Tal45 · 24/12/2020 20:32

It's not really up to SIL whether she hands it over or not though is it, as it doesn't bloody belong to her. What a cow.

Serendipity26 · 24/12/2020 20:32

Some phones have a facility to measure oxygen saturation - usually in the health button if it’s Samsung. Hope you feel better soon.

ree348 · 24/12/2020 20:35

Your SIL is incredibly selfish. On a more important note, please contact 111 for some advice.

MrsBeltane · 24/12/2020 20:36

If your breathing is laboured you really should get some professional advice. Ring 111 and see what they recommend. They might send a paramedic who will check your oxygen level.

AnotherVice · 24/12/2020 20:46

Urgh please don't. I work front line in the ambulance service, all we are doing at the moment is going from Covid positive patient to Covid positive patient just to 'check them out'. You will be short of breath walking upstairs, you have Covid! If you are desperately struggling to breathe call 999.

Damn sick people getting in the way of your real work.

Presumably 111 will decide whether it is necessary or not.

Well they'd be off my off my Christmas card and present list.

Brighterthansunflowers · 24/12/2020 21:27

YANBU of course. Morality of who needs it more aside (because it’s clearly you), they have no right to refuse to give FIL back something which belongs to him, regardless of what he intends to do with it.

AnotherVice · 24/12/2020 21:30

I am certainly not lying. There are times an 'all call' goes out because a 999 call has come in for a patient not breathing and there is no ambulance to send. There are 3 ambulance in my town tonight. My crewmate is in with another Covid positive patient right now just 'checking them out'. Leaving this advice sheet, as we have done for numerous others, and yes I'm waiting in the ambulance because it only takes one person to check someone's sats and it's an unnecessary risk for us, not to mention the PPE that we don't have enough of Hmm

Am I right to feel upset or AIBU?
EstherMumsnet · 24/12/2020 21:32

Evening all, ho ho ho. It may be Christmas Eve but we're still here deleting any troll hunting that gets reported to us. As we have said to our kids this evening; behave, or Santa won't come.

Meanwhile hope you feel better soon OP.

AnotherVice · 24/12/2020 21:40

Damn sick people getting in the way of your real work. We are all exhausted, working away from our families tonight, scared of catching Covid but even more terrified of taking it to our next vulnerable patient. We go to 90yr olds who have been on the floor for 12hrs because a '111 breathing problems' takes priority to 'check someone's sats' because they get breathless walking upstairs when we already know they have Covid. Our hearts are breaking for the patients that really need us and we can't provide the care we want to. Where is the love for the NHS?

MaryLeeOnHigh · 24/12/2020 21:40

Can't your FIl tell your SIL it's not hers to keep and he insists on having it back now?

To be honest, ordering one that won't arrive till the 29th seems pointless - if I were you I'd cancel that.

Tistheseason17 · 24/12/2020 21:45

OP - please call 111. Laboured breathing and breathless up stairs not a good sign and need to be explored with a professional.

ImPrincessAurora · 24/12/2020 21:46

YANBU. I’d call 111 for advice. My DC had a raging temperature for 12 hours and the dr we spoke to (on a call back) gave us excellent advice to get it down without the need to go to hospital.
