People who say this, thinking this means that they can't catch it again, are thickos?

They're up there with the nose sticking out above the mask types.

People who post like this with our reading the science are probably the thickos

The numbers who have been conformed to have had covid twice worldwide are very small. They are documented in medical journals.

In most cases when there was a second positive test researchers were unable to grow live virus from any of the samples, and none of the infected people appeared to have spread the virus to others – suggesting that the positive tests were just picking up old virus from the original infection.

Nowaynothappening · 23/12/2020 17:41

Reinfection is rare. Most people develop antibodies once they have had it. It isn’t known how long the antibodies last at this stage but they definitely exist.

My Mum’s partner had it in April but she didn’t have any symptoms so guessed she hadn’t caught it. They both had an antibody test last month and both had the antibodies.

dementedpixie · 23/12/2020 17:43

They probably won't catch it for some time afterwards, maybe several months

TwoCupsOfLemonTea · 23/12/2020 17:43

Calling anyone a 'thicko' automatically makes you a twat a and puts you in the 'nose over the mask' bracket of folk!

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 17:44

In mid December- worldwide based on scientific journals, media reports, and other sources.

Currently, the BNO list includes 28 different cases, along with the date that the case was reported, the country location of the case, the age and sex of the person, the number of days between the first infection and the second, the severity of the Covid-19 coronavirus infection in both incidences, an indication of whether the person eventually recovered, and the source that reported the case. Symptoms were present in about 83% of the first infections and 87% of the second infections. On average the second infection came 78 days after the first infection.

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 17:44

28 people worldwide- I will take my chances.

Heartlantern2 · 23/12/2020 17:45

You sound silly, and whilst your not wrong, it is rare to catch it again so quickly....so really, you sound stupid saying it.

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 17:46

BNO also maintains a web page entitled “Suspected cases of COVID-19 reinfection.” . As of mid December, this list includes 1,673 cases and 20 deaths. Over 700 of these cases have been from the U.S. and over 300 from Brazil. Of course, “suspected” simply means suspected and not confirmed.

UntamedWisteria · 23/12/2020 17:47

DS had Covid in September. We are absolutely counting on him not getting again over Xmas.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 23/12/2020 17:47

I think this is why it's spreading. So many people have had it, or think they have had it, so are going about ther lives without thinking of anyone else.

Covidrelapse · 23/12/2020 17:48

I personally know of 2 people who have tested positive for Covid twice. Both NHS staff. It is not as rare as you think.

BlusteryLake · 23/12/2020 17:49

"thickos"? How old are you - 10? The level of mis-information around Covid is astounding and people are not stupid for struggling to decipher the facts.

UndeadSlut · 23/12/2020 17:49

I have even more ire for the people who say "I've already had it" and then it turns out that they had a runny nose back in March, didn't get tested as that wasn't really a thing then, but decided that was definitely it.

DP and I both had a horrendous cough, temp and lethargy at the beginning of April and think it's a possibility we had it, but we're still being careful and not saying we've definitely had it!

PurpleDaisies · 23/12/2020 17:50

@TeenageMutantNinjaCovid

28 people worldwide- I will take my chances.
But many, many more on Mumsnet...
SandysMam · 23/12/2020 17:52

Is having it and the subsequent anti bodies the same as having a vaccine (I genuinely don’t know the answer to this)
If so does this mean once people are vaccinated we will still have to live our lives as if we had no protection at all? That doesn’t really make sense?

dementedpixie · 23/12/2020 17:53

If you have tested positive then you aren't supposed to test again within 90 days in the absence of new symptoms as it can pick up fragments of the previous infection and you can test positive without being contagious.

Echobelly · 23/12/2020 17:54

I wouldn't call them thick, just possibly unwise. If they had it 3 months ago, yes, they might well still be immune, if it was in March they shouldn't be betting on it.

ImPrincessAurora · 23/12/2020 17:55

Thickos?! Bit rude.

I was told not to test my DC who had a raging temperature because it was within 3 months of their previous positive test. I was told this by a health professional who also told me that if I went against this advice I would be “wasting nhs resources”.

I guess she was a thicko too.

Oblomov20 · 23/12/2020 17:57

What are the statistics? How common is it to catch twice. I don't think it's that common, is it?

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 17:57

But many, many more on Mumsnet...

3 in 1 family last week
I was going to ask if they were being case studied by Imperial as they oddly justify a whole medical journal.

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 17:59

28 confirmed cases worldwide- so pretty rare.
dementedpixie · 23/12/2020 18:02

Maybe those nhs staff had tested within 90 days of their original positive test

SunshineCake · 23/12/2020 18:04

My friend has two friend who have caught it twice. One mildly the first time, the second more severely.

cologne4711 · 23/12/2020 18:05

They're up there with the nose sticking out above the mask types.

No, they are not thickos and they are a very long way from the nose sticking above the mask types, especially if they had it recently.

Very few people have had it twice, that's why it's newsworthy when they do.

We don't fully understand how the virus works, but I am much happier seeing my elderly mother knowing she's already had it, than I would be if she had not.
