People who say this, thinking this means that they can't catch it again, are thickos?

They're up there with the nose sticking out above the mask types.

Thanks for clarifying

I’ve heard anecdotally people that had it right at the beginning starting to get it again, whether their immunity is subsiding or not working against the new strain who knows?

The general (guarded) view from scientists is that there’s no issue with vaccines (or immunity after having a previous infection) not being effective against the new strain. Immunity against coronaviruses is know not to last a long time. March is eight months ago now...

Tumbleweed101 · 23/12/2020 18:43

I may have had it end of Feb/March but as there was no testing can't trust that it was.

We had a lot of children at nursery spike with 40C temps and be quite poorly with coughs. It was different to flu but worse than a cold. Very odd. I had a few days off work but was otherwise ok. This was before it was meant to have reached our part of the country.

Sparechange · 23/12/2020 18:43

I work in an office of around 2500 people, and in about July, the company started offering free antibody tests to all staff.

When we had the test, we were asked if we thought we had already had Covid.

The analysis of the results showed that around 50% of people who said they thought they had it came back with a negative test result.

And around 50% of people who came back with a positive antibody test result had said they didn’t think they had it.

Which says to me that people’s own perception of whether they’ve had it are as accurate as flipping a coin, so I am not surprised by all the people on MN who know a friend of a friend who has had it twice

NaughtipussMaximus · 23/12/2020 18:44

However the new variant seems to have a higher rate of reinfection than we've seen before, Whether that's because they can say this variant wasn't about back when they had their first positive test, or because immunity is wearing off from the first set of people who had it, or because it has mutated enough (like flu does) for reinfection, I will leave up to the scientists to investigate.

There’s no evidence for this at all. This is just scaremongering. There are literally about 30 people who have been proven to have had it twice. Honest to god, it’s so irresponsible to spout shite like this with zero sources and zero understanding. You should leave talking about it to the scientists too.

Unsure33 · 23/12/2020 18:45

I also know someone who tested positive. Twice . About 4 months apart . Quite ill both times.

LindaEllen · 23/12/2020 18:45

We've had it. We see our risk personally as quite small now; but at the same time we can always carry the virus even though we wouldn't catch it (on our hands etc) so we still stick to the rules 100%.

Kaliorphic · 23/12/2020 18:46

none of the infected people appeared to have spread the virus to others – suggesting that the positive tests were just picking up old virus from the original infection

SOmuchsparkle · 23/12/2020 18:47

I think it's more than 28 people.

Oodlesofnoodles20 · 23/12/2020 18:48

By brother definitely needs to be a clinical study as he has had it about 5 times Grin

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 18:48

My DH came back from working in Milan when Italy locked down in February. He was very ill the next week- was in hospital but wasn't tested for covid. I then got it from him, my DD from me and finally my son when he came home from Uni in March.

Sore throats, cough, colds, chest, fever etc. We thought we might have had it. Did antibody testing in July but negative.

We all got covid in October. Mild symptoms- much much less ill than in February but with hindsight very different symptoms. No cold type symptoms or chest infection.

I personally, in my immediate family, know two people who have tested positive twice, months apart and testing negative in between.

But I'm fed up of people who assume they've had it because they had a bad chest last Winter. I feel like everyone I know is saying this at the moment - oh I think I had it when I had that bad cough, oh I think I had it because I woke up breathless, oh I think I had it because I couldn't smell my perfume that one time. Maybe you did, but assume you didn't unless you had a test.

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 18:54

In this example it was the same covid that re-ignited- not getting covid twice.

Same here with my family
MiddleClassMother · 23/12/2020 18:56

My boss says this as she comes in coughing all over us and everything. Disgusting.

NaughtipussMaximus · 23/12/2020 18:57

@SOmuchsparkle

I think it's more than 28 people.
Do you have any evidence for that? Or is it just a feeling?

Any disease can be caught twice... Its just very rare... And normally has to be recorded... Sorry op but you are coming across as the thicko here....
Mangofandangoo · 23/12/2020 19:00

I'm sure I've had it, last December. I've still been taking all precautions and washing my hands like a nutcase because I'm terrified of catching it again

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 19:01

To clarify

I wasn't suggesting I had it twice. I was just saying there was a bad bug going round in January /Feb which many people thought might be covid.

We tested to check and it wasn't which we accepted.

When we finally got covid we were left in no doubt that the Feb illness hadn't been covid as they were very different.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/12/2020 19:01

I'm confused. Is it a question you're asking, or are you making a statement?

Shesingsshangrila · 23/12/2020 19:01

@SOmuchsparkle

I think it's more than 28 people.
Oh well, if you think it's more, you must be right. Best ignore the scientists.
lavenderlou · 23/12/2020 19:02

Totally anecdotal but DH's friend (teacher) had it in October and again in December. Tested positive both times. We are in an area that has high numbers of the mutant strain so I wonder if he had a different strain each time.
