As the title says, I’m looking for some spooky ghost stories to watch tomorrow evening like the MR James ones that BBC4 put on sometimes.

I love a good creepy story, ‘Whistle and I’ll Come to You’ being one of my absolute favourites!

I’d like some recommendations too! The Inside Number 9 Christmas special was good. A few years back now though.

I was just going to say Whistle and I'll Come to You. I'll watch this thread to widen my repertoire

Bewilderedkitten · 23/12/2020 16:01

We have been watching all the bbc christmas ghost stories one a night since the 13th december. Whistle and I will come to you was the first one. The 2005 John Hurt version will be the last, I think tomorrow night. My DH is enjoying them alot. Most of them are abit too slow and barely eventful for me.

I love The Signalman which is one of the bbc Xmas ghost stories

Redannie118 · 23/12/2020 16:13

The signalman is really good. I like the new version of whistle and ill come to you with John Hurt. Crooked House is a ghost story based on the works of MR James and first broadcast on BBC4.
Creepshow has a Christmas ghost story special. These are all on Prime. Crimson peak on netflix is a really good version of a modern Christmas ghost story- beautiful costumes and sprawling gothic mansions with lots of howling winds and snow and some very spooky ghosts !!

The woman in black - the tv version not the Daniel Radcliffe version

The haunting - the original 1960s version

Bewilderedkitten · 23/12/2020 16:18

I did enjoy the signal man. It was based on a Charles Dickens story. I don't really get the MR James ones.

@Biscuitsanddoombar

The woman in black - the tv version not the Daniel Radcliffe version

The haunting - the original 1960s version

That version of the Woman in Black is truly terrifying. I remember it was shown on Christmas Eve and it gave me and my mum actual nightmares.

Just googled it - was 1989!!!!!

risefromyourgrave · 23/12/2020 16:57

Some great shows/films here, unfortunately I’ve watched them all. Xmas Sad There is certainly a lack of actual ghost stories in the world, I bloody love being scared! Scariest thing I ever saw was the stage show of The Woman in Black - so good!

Little bump for the evening crowd!

The Signalman was the creepiest ghost story I have watched but where can I find these?

YouCanWorkItOut · 23/12/2020 20:18

Martins Close is an MR James one which is being shown at some point if you search, watched it last year and it was quite good.

Ghost Stories the film with Martin Freeman etc is on as well and I find that so creepy!! But I am easily creeped.

SilverStarburst · 23/12/2020 20:45

I might be going off-piste as not a Christmas ghost story, but I recently watched mini series The Third Day, set on an island and I found it super-creepy, very atmospheric, despite normally being a hardcore horror fan. Think it was on one if the normal tv channels, so probably available on catch-up.

JudyGemstone · 24/12/2020 17:50

Looks like it's all about BBC2 tonight, Martins close, the dead room and then the lost ghost story which is a doc on MR James by Mark Gatiss which I'm excited for - and then the Ghost Story film mentioned above.
