To Cook Smoked Salmon?

HarrietPotterska · 23/12/2020 12:03

Argh! So we have had a side of smoked salmon delivered for tomorrow. I thought it was raw and would have baked it. Can I also bake smoked salmon? Will it be weird??

I always grill smoked salmon, hate the consistency otherwise.

RizzleDrizzle · 23/12/2020 12:19

Smoked salmon doesn’t need to be cooked as the smoking process cures it. It is as such raw, you slice it very very finely

However of course you can cook it, you will loose the texture and it will become flakey like salmon is when it is cooked it will also stop being translucent and turn a paper pink!

I’ve chucked smoked salmon in a cream cheese sauce for pasta.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/12/2020 12:21

Why would you waste and bastardise smoked salmon in such a way?

LabCoatPocket · 23/12/2020 12:28

Not what you are asking, but if you want ideas to use it up, I make a smoked salmon, pea and parsley risotto, but add in the chopped smoked salmon at the very end. It doesn't cook as such but warms through, and always goes down well.

HarrietPotterska · 23/12/2020 12:35

Yes, I know it doesn't need cooking. Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer - tomorrow is Wigilia, which is the Polish Christmas celebration, in which we have fish. I don't have time to get another side of salmon!

Its a centre piece and will be eaten with a variety of other things, so I need to use it, but no one will want cold smoked salmon for the main meal

OP posts:
nosswith · 23/12/2020 12:37

I'd grill it. Salmon shouldn't be cold for a main meal such as you describe.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/12/2020 12:37

Why don't you go out and buy some fish that should be cooked?

TheKeatingFive · 23/12/2020 12:38

Very lighted cooked smoked salmon is divine.

Different texture of course. Depends what you’re looking for,

HarrietPotterska · 23/12/2020 12:39

@RosesAndHellebores because I'm on the ward until 8pm today

@RosesAndHellebores I'm clearly annoying you so just scroll on by.

HarrietPotterska · 23/12/2020 12:41

@TheKeatingFive yes, I don't want the smoked salmon texture, I want the more flaky texture

We usually get a whole side of smoked salmon direct from the fishery as a gift from mil. We will miss is this year. It's far too much for us to eat as raw smoked salmon slices so we always end up cooking a lot of it. It is lovely cooked but quite salty. We usually wrap it in filo pastry and eat with pretty plain sides to balance the saltiness.

Ostryga · 23/12/2020 12:51

It’ll bd totally fine to cook, pop in a large baking tray, slice lemons over the top and out some white wine/water in the bottom - not to cover. And then cover with foil and bake for around 25 mins - check and see if it needs slightly longer. It’ll be lovely!

Ostryga · 23/12/2020 12:52

Oh yes, don’t season it with salt - it’ll be plenty salty. Just lots of black pepper when it’s cooked.

HarrietPotterska · 23/12/2020 12:52

@Ostryga that sounds utterly delicious and what I think I will do! Thank you!

I cook smoked salmon often. It makes a delicious, cheesy, salmon crumble. I also do a smoked salmon and sliced potato dish which is oven baked.

That sounds amazing! We often get gifts of smoked salmon - too much for a two-person household - thank you very much for the alternative uses!
Almostslimjim · 23/12/2020 13:00

Yes cook it. Hot smoked salmon is delicious.

Almostslimjim · 23/12/2020 13:00

An you can cook it just like normal unsmoked salmon.

TheKeatingFive · 23/12/2020 13:01

That sounds amazing. Do you have a recipe? Smile

orangenasturtium · 23/12/2020 13:03

Yes, you can cook it if it is whole, the same as you would unsmoked salmon. You can get smoked salmon fillets for cooking in the supermarket.

You could cook it if it's been sliced but it might cook a bit unevenly/dry out if it doesn't hold its shape, it would be better used in a recipe.

2bazookas · 23/12/2020 13:28

No cooking !!!!!!! Just eat it.

Good on cream cheese and little biscuits.
Great breakfast with scrambled egg
I like it with buttered crusty buttered brown bread, a grind of black pepper and a wedge of fresh lemon to squeeze over it.

HarrietPotterska · 23/12/2020 14:12

@2bazookas If you look at my update I'm not looking for suggestions for smoked salmon! I need a piece of cooked fish for a traditional polish celebration, and a side of smoked salmon is all I have.

It’s fine to cook it. My brother (who is really adventurous food wise normally) can’t do salmon ‘raw’ he just feels sick at the thought. My mum usually fries his for a few seconds and it tastes lovely as I stole sone once Grin. It should be lovely done in the oven. You might prefer it like that! Enjoy!

StrawberrySquash · 23/12/2020 15:34

Absolutely fine. Sainsbury's do fillets of smoked salmon for cooking along side the unsmoked normal fillets.
