I've woken up with no taste or smell. I can't taste anything at all. Yes, I know what this means. Is it bad that my first thought was about the sourdough, Camembert and chilli jam Sad

OP posts:
SillyUnMurphy · 23/12/2020 09:21

We have rapid mobile testing units in our area over the next few days (results in approx. an hour) if you have anything similar nearby it might be worth getting one of those tests.

LadyLazaruss · 23/12/2020 09:21

@FollowThatStarTonight

*When to get a test Get a test as soon as possible if you have any symptoms of coronavirus.

The symptoms are:

a high temperature
a new, continuous cough
a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste
The test needs to be done in the first 8 days of having symptoms.

You do not need to get a test if you have no symptoms or if you have different symptoms*

I do not have those symptoms. If I had those symptoms I would request a test.

I literally just looked that page up for you. I also only have a stuffed nose and sneezing, so I won't be wasting a test either.
Rudolph98 · 23/12/2020 09:21

I had a reduced (but not complete loss) of smell and taste last week. Barely lasted 12 hours and I had a bad throat. I got a test and it was negative so it was just a cold related issue. Hopefully it won’t last too long op.
Last too long op.

movingonup20 · 23/12/2020 09:23

All packaged food is labelled as to whether you can freeze. For veggies you need to blanche in hot water then can freeze. Creamy things, soups etc are more pleasant to eat without taste I discovered. Unfortunately for me it was around 10 days to get anything back

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 23/12/2020 09:23

It might not be. But it still sucks.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 23/12/2020 09:24

My dd had the loss of smell/taste.
It returned eventually and the first thing that she was able to smell was the dogs breath Grin

Bluehasnoclue · 23/12/2020 09:25

I saw on the internet the other day an apparent old wives tale about eating burned/charred orange apparently bringing back taste & smell! It worked for the person who posted it but no idea if it works all the time! Might be worth a go.

So sorry OP what rubbish timing. Hope you remain well & get back to normal ASAP!

switswooo · 23/12/2020 09:28

@JinglingHellsBells

well I hope you are going to a) get a test and b) self isolate along with your family and c) call off any gatherings until you have the results.
We can always rely on you to deaden the mood Jingling
CeibaTree · 23/12/2020 09:28

Oh that sucks OP, what rotten timing! Seems like 2020 just keeps on giving right until the last minute :( Fingers crossed it's a mild case, and these will be your only symptoms :)

SomethingWycked · 23/12/2020 09:29

My DP lost his taste & smell a few weeks back. His lateral flow at work then PCR via NHS were negative. Fingers crossed for you.

Tupperwarelid · 23/12/2020 09:30

My DH has tested positive and has lost his sense of taste and smell. He’s gutted obviously, just wants to be able to taste a decent cup of coffee. He’s also going to be gutted when he realised most of his presents involve food/drink/chocolate.

LovingCountryLife · 23/12/2020 09:30

VinylDetective · 23/12/2020 09:34

@CatVsChristmasTree

This is my biggest fear this Christmas, not being able to taste all the food! Though I'd probably lose a stone...
You probably wouldn’t lose a gram. My bloke lost his sense of smell and taste after a head injury 14 years ago - he keeps eating the things he loved in the hope it’s miraculously returned!

Hope your test’s negative, OP.

BexR · 23/12/2020 09:36

Oh no OP, definitely freeze your favourites or treat yourself again in January.

My dad had a positive text 2 months ago. No symptoms (was tested due to hospital appointment). A month later he had negative test for rescheduled appointment. Now weeks later he has lost his smell?? He's assuming it's a long covid effect.

TottiePlantagenet · 23/12/2020 09:42

@Coffeeandcookies

I'm worried about this happening, so just in case I'm going to eat all the Christmas cheese, chocolate, mince pies and various other goodies as quickly as I can.
👍🤣

OP hope you're feeling ok and get your sense of taste back soon.

BashfulClam · 23/12/2020 09:42

@LadyLazaruss it is something to weigh up. If a stuffy nose is stopping me sleeping I will use it but it does affect my sense of smell.

Googlebrained · 23/12/2020 09:48

I went off tea for the first time ever when I had CV. Something to do with my taste buds i suspect. I enjoyed my first cup yesterday, nine months later. It's a curious virus!

It may be better to wait a day to get your test if you can OP. There's a higher chance of getting a false negative one day after symptoms start than five days after they begin.

Hope you get to enjoy that gorgeous cheese in time for Christmas Day OP.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 23/12/2020 09:52

Sorry to hear that OP!
I had what I think was CV in March (no tests unless you literally couldn't breathe) and my sense of smell went super sensitive. Could not stand the smell of coffee anywhere near me and the lovely new room spray I used smelled like ethanol and manure or something. Back then the loss of smell/taste wasn't a recognised symptom. I lost my appetite so nothing tasted good anyway.

Gingerkittykat · 23/12/2020 10:04

I've been coughing all night and DD since yesterday and we both have high temperatures. We feel a bit rough but not really ill.

I'm gutted at the thought I'm going to miss my Christmas dinner and see my sister for the 3rd time this year (allowed to meet in Scotland). We don't even have any nice food in the house since I knew we wouldn't be cooking it.

Test booked for this afternoon, hopefully results before Christmas.

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 10:06

@santasmincepie

I have the same! The good news is I can still taste bailey's and wine, so all is not lost!
That goes on the 2nd day
TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 23/12/2020 10:07

Nice to see the prefects have turned up

Detentions for all

reluctantbrit · 23/12/2020 10:09

DD's sense of taste came back after 3 days, for me, everything tasted metallic for 2 days.

Maybe you are lucky and you can enjoy your food by the 26th/27th.

Good luck.

CoraPirbright · 23/12/2020 10:15

Oh OP I feel your pain! I had a horrible feeling like a sinus infection so went for a test on Sunday. Woke up yesterday morning feeling completely better...only to receive a text that my results were positive! Then yesterday pm I realised that my sense of smell has vanished and therefore, along with it about half of my sense of taste. Gah! All the lovely Christmas food in the house...its torture!!

alittleprivacy · 23/12/2020 10:19

@callmeadoctor What is the actual percentage of people with covid then, surely we all starting to completely overreact now? (not saying that you are OP, its just that everyone on here seems to think that "of course u have covid!!!")

It's actually fucking massive. Yesterday alone, 1 out of every 1,848 people in the UK was a confirmed positive. That's confirmed positive in the 24 hour period that was announced yesterday. It's statistically extremely likely the OP has it.

CottonSock · 23/12/2020 10:20

My dh is another one with a load of covid symptoms and a negative test. He's isolating anyway. Not taking the risk. Hope he'll eat a bit more by Christmas day.
