we just counted all the presents and daughter has 5 more than son to open but son has a big set with three toys in one.
I remember being a kid, we used to take turns opening so if someone has more, we knew.

I don't know what to do, buy 5 more little gifts so he opens the same? seems wasteful but I don't want him to think his sister has been better behaved and santa gave her more
wwyd?

No, never have done that and the kids have never mentioned anything. We take turns with family presents but tbe adults generally only have one or two any way. They are usually just excited to have presents.

I realised that DD (8) had twice as much as DS (4) because he didn't put anything on his xmas list, so i went and bought multiple things for DS... when i've checked again he now has more than her but his are smaller.

At this point i've given up because i realised by the time i've set everything out from friends and family as well it was never going to look "equal".

Also i got them similar "big gifts" (fur real toys) but his is in a much bigger box so that looks uneven but cost exactly the same and is almost the same item (just different animals).

Mine have same amount maybe one or two different. I wrap some together sometimes to lessen a pile if needed, this year I’ve wrapped books together and art supplies so they have equal parcels to open.

Going by your username, I'm going to presume they're your grandchildren? In which case I wouldn't worry too much 🥂

I still make sure my DC get the same number of things to open, and spend roughly the same amount on them each as well. Its what my Mum always did so 'normal' to me.
Sometimes I have to wrap 2 or 3 things as one present (not random things but for eg one year my Mum wrapped about 5 books as one gift for me. My brother had a keyboard, which obviously cost more. So I had more 'items' but Mum made the same number of 'presents' to unwrap)

I think they will definitely notice, especially if you take turns to open presents, as we do.

Stockings from Santa. Identical number. I have just wrapped up a roll of sellotape to achieve this ( will probably be the favourite pressie).

Proper presents are from mummy and daddy and the number doesn’t matter as much
