Shops always busy at Christmas, I've just stupidly tried to pop in for a few things, first aisle got jammed in and couldn't move trolley round with out bumping someone, everywhere I turned trolleys and people darting around. Put my apples back, decided to go back later but still struggled to navigate round people. Get near doors decide to keep walking at this point as a man walk down my right side trying to cut across in front and because I decided to keep going, got called a F**king nut case and he kept calling me to the man behind me.

As I left I stated to the man behind that I'd spend a good while trying to stay out of people way that I didnt actually get anywhere and he was being a bit harsh, he replied well I never f**king said anything did I.
I need stuff but I'm I the only one to find the shops today so unbearable that I left and Im prepared to just get whats left later rather than deal with crowds like that.
Christ it had me dizzy and demented.

Sorry, just feel calmer already just typing my stress out!!!

Sainsbury Smartshop - I was in and out in 15 minutes yesterday. I don’t do queues.

EbeneezerSnooze · 22/12/2020 16:13

@Dyrne

I am extremely amused by the posters bewildered at the need to go to a supermarket and suggesting the butcher/farm shop etc.

Look, some of us are peasants and need the 1kg of carrots for only 19p, all right? Grin

This made me laugh 😂! So true!!

Um - I know it sounds nice to clock off at say 2100 when you work at a supermarket but its the customers that delay you from leaving on time although a strict supervisor will try and sort out.

Please let this NOT be anyone on this thread but are you the person who goes into supermarkets 10 mins before closing time every single sodding Saturday night and on the way in you grab your large trolley. You are the only one in there and you smugly think - I have the store to myself - how lucky am I. You are actually a complete arsehole who delay the staff every single week with your method of shopping. You take at least 15-20 minutes wandering around the store. You get to the till after closing time but that's OK (for you!). You wonder whether you have everything you need. The staff are circiling around dying to go home but NO - you wont be rushed.

Grey haired man about 55 - IS THIS YOU??

I'm annoyed for you just reading that 😤 the manager should let them know when they enter that they only have 10 mins, and then approach them at closing time to inform them that you are closing now so they need to pay for the shopping they have and leave. They can come back to complete their shopping when you are open. It's so inconsiderate and entitled!

@JinglingHellsBells

At the risk of being shouted at, all the supermarkets did have plenty of click and collect slots a few months back if you got in early and booked.
I could have booked ahead, but I, like millions of us thought we didn't need to - until Friday many thought that we were going to be elsewhere, or that people were coming to us bringing things that we now need to get ourselves Xmas Sad
MrsDThomas · 22/12/2020 16:36

Not unreasonable. I heard an old couple complaining to each other about the lack of distancing in Tesco earlier and I thought with 3 days to go till Christmas and no one manning the doors, they weren’t gonna get it. Either get online or ask someone to get the shopping in. Its Christmas and its busy

"Unfortunately a panic attack does often force you to do this."

I very much doubt that everyone who does this is having a panic attack.

@I8toys

I had an awful experience out on Saturday. Needed a haircut and went to shop next door to get something for my dad as I needed to wait outside the hairdresser to get called in.

It said 6 people in the shop - I could see 2 in the main but, but it has a blind corner and I couldn't see around it. Walked in looked and then went out and waited. One man got served then waited inside for his partner, he could see me waiting outside and still didn't come out and let me in. Then another woman shopping with her partner said I barged in - I said I didn't I couldn't see around the corner so didn't know how many people were in and I could now enter as there was 6 people in the shop. Its just fucking horrible.

Feel your pain. I have also wished silently for a vaporise button for those who aren’t aware that other people would like to shop too.

Last week (early ) the out of town Tesco didn’t have its usual queue so I wandered across to go in. It’s entrance is in a multi story car park. I waited for a lady faffing with a trolley and one of the door assistants stopped me said “ there’s a queue you know”.
Duh - Clearly I didn’t.
I asked her where because usually there is a queue left or right of the door and there wasn’t one.. This time they had started the queue in the car park so the first person in it was the other side of a double zebra crossing!
I mean how the heck was I to know that was a queue and not just oeopke waiting to cross!

TheDailyMailIsAFilthyRag · 22/12/2020 16:56

The shops seem to be fine here. DH went once yesterday and again today to get what he couldn't get yesterday. No issues. Yes he had to queue for one of the shops, but not for too long. I was pleasantly surprised! Hoping not to go for a week now.

I very much doubt it too. However it sounds like the OP was.
pigsDOfly · 22/12/2020 17:42

Don't blame you OP. Sounds like hell.

I went to Tesco this morning just after 10.00.

I was surprised to see people queueing again. However, it moved pretty quickly and I was in the shop in less than 10 minutes.

My Tesco is operating a traffic light system and the doors close when the light is red, there's also someone standing at the door to tell people when to go in. I assume that person is operating the lights as well.

So yes, some shops are still restricting the amount of people allowed in.

Daphnise · 22/12/2020 17:47

I'm afraid the OP is exactly the type of person most people find annoying in supermarkets. "Popping in for a few things" indeed, and then throwing a wobbly because others are doing a main shop.

Mommabear20 · 22/12/2020 18:04

DH and I went after he finished work (I normally go alone but am struggling with morning sickness atm and didn't have anyone to go for me and DH doesn't drive) we decided to split the shop! 😂 you take the left isles and I'll take the right 😂
Literally 15 minutes, in, round, pay and out! Aunt got the time or energy to spend any longer in the supermarket at Christmas time even more so this year!

GabsAlot · 23/12/2020 16:26

they need to put one way systems back in

MissCalamity · 23/12/2020 16:32

I went to Asda about 7.30pm last night and it was fine, loads of veg. I'm off on a Wednesday so normally do my food shop today, but didn't want to chance it.

My poor Dad on the other hand is currently stuck in a humongous queue for the local butchers for the turkey. 2 hours now Xmas Shock It better be good after all that!

Emmelina · 23/12/2020 16:48

I understand the need to just ‘get out’ of somewhere crowded, I do.

But - by the time staff realise your trolley is abandoned and you’re not coming back, any perishable goods will be unsafe to sell on.

Plussizejumpsuit · 23/12/2020 17:05

Go late a night it's really not very busy then.

Plussizejumpsuit · 23/12/2020 17:07

I don't think I could do my shopping without sainsburys smart shop! Love it!
Fattoushka · 23/12/2020 17:10

Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet/before but if you google (has to be google search engine) the store you need (example Tesco Liverpool Street) and scroll down on the search page slightly, there is a live feed telling you how busy it is

monty09 · 23/12/2020 17:37

I went to Iceland and Morrison's today both absolutely packed, tried to keep out the way of other people as much as possible but the queues were awful.

Mum1957 · 23/12/2020 17:37

Peasants!

Pinkypie86 · 23/12/2020 17:39

Braved Tesco @ 1.30/2pm - it was busy, no queue for the tills, no bumping people and all products available.
I was worried beforehand but, shouldn't have been.
Go tonight - the weather is awful too so people hopefully will stay home.
Good Luck!

EleanorRigbyWasReal · 23/12/2020 17:41

Don’t blame you! I was in Sainsbury’s yesterday and there was no queue. I thought it odd as the car park was busy.

Once inside, I couldn’t get out again quickly enough. So, so crowded. No distancing going on. I had to get a few things only and managed to get out quickly.

What a mess.
