To ask if there are people on here who've never cooked a Christmas dinner before?

And how old are you? I was really surprised when someone I know on FB posted that they were so sad not to be travelling to their parents with their family this year and that she's never cooked a Christmas dinner in her life.

She's 50!

Her parents are in their late 70s and early 80s!

Do these people not feel guilty or weird about going home like this every year?

I mean...going home is lovely...but surely you could muck in with the cooking if your parents are that elderly?

If you have never made a roast dinner, do you do any other cooking?

I'm bemused by questions like this. Why would you assume that people who have never made a roast dinner simply don't cook at all. Confused There are so many much nicer meals that you can make. Not everyone wants to eat the classic meat & 2 veg meals that you might regard as staples.

I cook all sorts, but it wouldn't ever occur to me to cook a roast.

"Do these people not feel guilty or weird about going home like this every year?"

OP, why do you think I should feel guilty. My parents wouldn't want me interfering by cooking at theirs and they wouldn't want to come to me as the rest of the family all live in the same area. What's there to feel guilty about? I'm not forcing anyone to cook for me. I'd be happy with a sandwich, but if they want to make Christmas dinner that's fine for me too.

userxx · 22/12/2020 15:38

I cooked my first roast dinner aged 19 !

Really? I was too busy partying to eat a roast dinner at 19 let alone make one!!

MrsKoala · 22/12/2020 15:48

I’ve cooked dinner on Christmas Day most years since I was 17 but only cooked the Turkey type dinner about 4 times - if I’ve been catering for in laws. I’m 44. But it’s easy to make a roast, not that we have one often.

For the first time since I was 17 we were planning on going to my parents on Christmas Day and I was looking forward to being cooked for for once. But now I’ve got to go shopping tomorrow and find some food to cook.

rainatnightlove · 22/12/2020 15:52

I have never (21) and hope to never have to since I don't like it. Grin

magicstar1 · 22/12/2020 15:56

I'm 45 and have only done it the past few years since my parents downsized and don't have room.
My mother still comes in and fusses around the turkey to see if I'm cooking it properly lol

Westiegirl3 · 22/12/2020 15:56

No not me and I'm nearly 40, I've served thousands of them though over the years. This is my first year off and I'll be helping my Mom in the kitchen is she allows but she's very precious over doing it herself

HelloDaisy · 22/12/2020 15:56

I am 51 and usually cook on Christmas Day with my lovely sil but have never cooked a whole turkey! Even when my mum was alive the three of us used to cook together but never a turkey. I am cooking one this year though....

Tigger001 · 22/12/2020 15:59

Me, I've never wanted to cook a Christmas dinner so haven't and I'm 38

Misssugarplum12764 · 22/12/2020 16:16

I cooked my first one at 34. I was at my parents’ every year until then!

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 22/12/2020 16:25

@userxx so you didnt have a dinner on xmas day than? Or someone else cook it? I was busy partying too but I didnt need to on xmas day! i lived in a flat and had relatives who I had to host so they didnt spend xmas alone!

RamblingFar · 22/12/2020 16:55

Late 30s here and I've never cooked one.

I frequently cook roast dinners for 1, using smaller cuts of meat, but I've never cooked and carved a large bird or other large meat joint.

Itstheprinciple · 22/12/2020 17:21

I love roast dinner and Christmas Dinner especially. Think I did my first Christmas Dinner when DD was a baby so I'd have been 26. It's got better since then. We have roasts for parents and in laws at Easter and other times of the year too in normal times though so it's not a massive thing.

Monkeytapper · 22/12/2020 17:27

I haven’t...Mum did it whilst living at home, then when I left home went to hers again. Met OH and we have either gone on holiday at Xmas, or had Xmas dinner in a restaurant or he has cooked because he enjoys doing it..I am sure I could do it if I had to though. I’m 42.

TokyoSushi · 22/12/2020 17:29

I'm 40, never cooked a roast dinner, never mind a Christmas dinner. I met DH when I was young, he was an excellent chef for years, I have no need to cook.

SomelikeitHoth · 22/12/2020 17:30

It's just a Sunday dinner

trevthecat · 22/12/2020 17:35

33 and never had. Dh always cooks it. He loves it!

mizu · 22/12/2020 17:37

47 and never cooked a Christmas dinner. Will be doing this year though!

LaceyBetty · 22/12/2020 17:38

44 and have never cooked a Christmas dinner or a roast. Met my husband at 24 and he's always done it. Or we've been at parents/in-laws. I don't really cook at all. I don't enjoy it and my husband does.

JHaniver · 22/12/2020 17:39

I’m 35 and have never done it. My DM loves hosting Christmas and hates people in her kitchen, so I’ve never even helped. I cook a great roast, as does DH, so I’m sure we could but I absolutely hate cooking for other people so I won’t be offering to have anyone round anytime soon.

superram · 22/12/2020 17:41

I have but not on Christmas Day. When I took the turkey out of the oven the giblets in their plastic bag had melted. Other than that it was fine. Thankfully I married someone who likes cooking and all is good.

MrsKoala · 22/12/2020 19:34

@SomelikeitHoth

Depends what you have for Sunday dinner. Last Sunday we had a curry, the one before was Mousaka, the one before that was basque chicken and rice.
tootiredtospeak · 22/12/2020 20:49

Never 43

NellePorter · 22/12/2020 21:58

I'm in my forties and I've never cooked Christmas dinner. I always help either with the prep or on the day, I am quite a good cook. We don't host.

JaceLancs · 22/12/2020 22:37

No
I stopped coming home for Xmas when I bought my first house at 21
Always do Xmas dinner - apart from last year when we went out to local Indian restaurant
