To spend Christmas with in laws ? Are we selfish if we do ?

We are a family of three. DH, DD (1 ) and I.

We see my in-laws and their adult children who live at home and work from home occasionally. So they're kind of in our support bubble. MIL has been in hospital due to an operation but got out yesterday.

Would you spend Christmas with them and stay at their house ?

OP posts:

@GlummyMcGlummerson

Also it's fine to ask MN a general question like this - otherwise we wouldn't have half the threads we do. Sometimes someone else confirming that you should or shouldn't do something is very reassuring.

That hasn't happened here however. Droves of posters seem to have taken a moment stressing out about their brandy butter to come and pick the OP apart, make her feel bad and tell her she's breaking restrictions when she isn't

Completely agree, classic "worst of mumsnet" behaviour.
Embracelife · 19/12/2020 10:48

Why do you need to stay overnight?
Just Go for the day
Open lots of windows

Retiremental · 19/12/2020 10:49

How many more of these ridiculous threads are we going to have this week? Grin

Scottishskifun · 19/12/2020 10:51

Your MIL has daily risk from her husband working outside the house.
I don't think it's unreasonable to have Christmas together there are things I would do to reduce the risk such as not stay over unless absolutely necessary and limit where I went between now and then if at all possible.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 19/12/2020 10:53

I wonder how many car accidents will happen with tires family driving hundreds of miles home because for some reason people think COVID comes out when people are asleep

@ineedaholidaynow

Bearing in mind a large proportion of people contract COVID whilst in hospital I would probably be avoiding them!
Thats my thinking. No way would I be going near anyone just out of hospital.

Do what you want OP, you're going to anyway.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 19/12/2020 11:00

@PinkiOcelot I've reported your very rude personal insult

Embracelife · 19/12/2020 11:02

The Government are advising people against overnight stays wherever possible, instead suggesting people to head home if they can as this minimises the risk of spreading coronavirus

Wow so many bullies on here that are totally missing the point of the thread. Get back in your bloody boxes and have a drink!!!

Tyres should always be road legal anyway..... Driving a few hundred miles doesn't suddenly make the tyre pop!

We do a 1200 mile round trip about 4 times a year (this year just once) never had a tyre go and cause an accident.

Also if driving you avoid contact so yes pop into a service station to use the loo buy a sandwich and eat it in your car sanitise your hands etc

Macncheeseballs · 19/12/2020 11:07

Using separate bathrooms would help if possible

SpiderGwen · 19/12/2020 11:09

Yes you are selfish.

And YABVU to post in AIBU and get the hump when people tell you Yes, you are.

Yes, strictly speaking it’s legal*, but as the medical professionals and scientists keep stressing, it’s unwise and will lead to another surge in cases.

*It’s only legal be the buffoon in charge wants to play BoJo Saves Christmas.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 19/12/2020 11:10

@Scottishskifun as much as I love it when posters are wilfully obtuse, I think you know I meant tired.

gamerchick · 19/12/2020 11:11

@questiontime100

I only started this thread to test MN and understand whether I should stay on this forum at all. I think what we are doing is completely reasonable by the way. I had dinner there two nights ago. We see each other all the time. Of course we will go for Christmas. The only issue being the hospital thing, but might get ML to take a private test if I'm really worried.

So yeah this has proven my point that most posters are completely unreasonable. They're our bubble and we are theirs. There is no extra risk. This is ridiculous. Last post. I'm deleting my account. I never want to come on here and listen to 'advice' again.

You're flouncing? Why do people do that, just leave if you want !

Yep.

I strongly suspect MNers are at the time of December when the stress of their Marytyr's Christmas is descending so they come on here to stick the boot in. OP is doing everything legally, I know a load of weirdo's think their judge and jury of what the restrictions should be, but unless they can express that with any credit somewhere other than MN they really need to fuck off.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 19/12/2020 11:14

@gamerchick can you blame the OP for flouncing?! People have called her names, tried to catch her out in a lie (she hasn't lied) - when she hasn't actually done anything wrong, or even suggested breaking the rules. A classic case of a revolting pile on.

Why are people too stupid to research stuff like this themselves ? No wonder we’re fucked. Critical thinking and common sense remain in very short supply. It’s about reduction of risks folks. Do some research.
Catlover77 · 19/12/2020 11:19

Who is Marytyr??

GlummyMcGlummerson · 19/12/2020 11:20

@Retiremental we're fucked because our government have cocked it up to the point where it's amazing a revolution hasn't happened. They put us in first lockdown about 3 weeks too late and have planned poorly since then. They can't make a decision more than 2 weeks before a certain date and have confused the hell out of everyone.

But yes it's Karen not opening her windows that's the real problem here 🙄

You really do need to do some critiquing of the scientific and medical evidence. Honestly. It’ll help you look not quite so thick when you’re ranting on FB Wink

Oh the irony of someone calling me thick who doesn't understand the difference between MN and FB Wink

Also, the irony of someone saying "I need to critique scientific and medical evidence" when I haven't so much as mentioned it. I mentioned the government response (which actually defies medical and scientific advice). Bless, you really think you're clever don't you? Word of advice - being rude and clever are two different things.

Catlover77 · 19/12/2020 11:34

Indeed! She’ll carry on ranting though
