Covid test.. don’t think I’ll be able to do the throat swab.

Hi all, how bad is the throat swab??

I’m asking because I have problems with my jaw. From tmj disorder. I cannot open my jaw that wide or keep it open for long without pain. I’m worried sick it will affect my ability to carry out the test.

Any insight?

Ask if just nose is accurate with that test and allowed due to your disorder. Or just do your best but don't hurt yourself. Hope it goes OK.

Hi, in my experience it’s not the most pleasant task ever, but bearable.

It does make me heave a bit but it’s soon over.

I don’t think you need to open your mouth very wide, could you tilt your head back maybe?

You have to swab tonsils for 5 secs so would that be doable? Perhaps tilt head back as pp suggested?

Children under 12 can just be given the nose element of they can't tolerate it. So I am sure it would be a reasonable adjustment

Not nice, but soon over. If it’s done properly it should make you gag, but you don’t have to open your mouth as wide as possible. After being randomly selected, dh and I were self testing every week for a month, and now once a month for a year.

From my experience you don't necessarily need to open your jaw that wide, just as long as they can get the swab (which is tiny) to the back of your throat. Make sure you explain the situation and I'm sure they'll understand and find a way around it.

I have a really bad gag reflex and I wish I'd just explained that at the time as I think they thought I was being a bit ridiculous.

I’ve tried practising this morning and I feel like I need to open my mouth wide enough to get my tongue out the way?! Worried I’ll touch my tongue 😭

Same problems as you but had a test no worries. Not pleasant haha but the swab is thin
