To be totally fed up of my coil?

It’s been 9 weeks now and I’m still bleeding every day. I had 4 days of zero spotting but the rest of the time it has ranged from needing a small panty liner to full on period with clots. Also, when my cervix moves lower during my period, the strings stick out of my vagina and poke me inside as I move. I keep having to use my finger to shove the strings back in to the side. They’re fine 90% of the time and had curled themselves behind my cervix but this week they’ve released themselves during my period.

I know everyone will probably say it’s still early days etc but it’s getting me down. I really thought the bleeding was slowing down last week but now my period has arrived as heavy as ever.

Please someone give me a positive story about bleeding stopping before 3 months!

It’s a hormonal coil, like the mirena, called Levosert.

i would visit the doctor just in case
best of wishes

Angeldust747 · 16/12/2020 20:25

I never had any of those issues with my coil (getting it out after 3 years was another matter!). Definitely speak to the doctors just in case

Cotswoldmama · 16/12/2020 20:25

It doesn't sound like it's been fitted properly the strings shouldn't hang down that far. I'd make an appointment to have it checked.

IRememberMySpaceBabe · 16/12/2020 20:26

I had mine fitted in the summer for heavy periods. I spotted on and off for 3 months, which was annoying, but the heavy periods have dwindled. I’ve also had weird stabby boobs and a spotty neck/jawline, but I’ll take those over the heavy periods.

Have you had it checked to see if it’s in position ok? Mine was checked 5 or so weeks after.

AddictedToCrisps · 16/12/2020 20:32

@IRememberMySpaceBabe I haven’t been able to arrange for it to be checked due to the recent lockdown. The gynae who fitted it didn’t tell me to get it checked she just said see you in 5 years and discharged me! She definitely didn’t mention about cutting the strings shorter or anything. I do wonder if I have a lower cervix than normal as I can’t use tampons.

Thats a while to be bleeding. I never felt strings my 3rd one fitted now. Hope it settles soon for you.

Serin · 16/12/2020 20:58

I had 4 months of misery after having a Mirena fitted but I would still trade that over the horrendous heavy bleeding every month.
After 4 months things improved remarkably and I have had 3 years of bliss now.
If you are concerned go back to your GP.

Delgjs · 16/12/2020 21:01

Did she tell you how to check it was still in the correct position?

AddictedToCrisps · 16/12/2020 21:21

Thanks @Serin, you’ve given me hope!

@Delgjs To be honest,it was such a nightmare fitting as I had a biopsy taken from my uterus first then she struggled to get the coil in. I think she just wanted me out of there. She said nothing other than come back in 5 years and I’ll get a call if there is a problem with the biopsies. She didn’t tell me anything and I was in pain so I just wanted to leave.

AddictedToCrisps · 16/12/2020 21:23

@Delgjs I have had a feel and I can definitely feel the threads coming out fine. They were curling away but during my period they’ve gone rogue and are all over the shop!! Maybe they need a trim??

I bled pretty much the whole time with mine, which was ironic as I had it put in to help with heavy periods. It eventually was pushed out due to fibroids.
I've also had depo injections to help and am still bleeding, albeit every two periods, but super heavy with massive clots. I've just gone through almost 4 packs of Always maxi nighttime pads in the past 5 days. This is also despite having a Zoladex injection to help prep my womb for ablation and fibroid shaving. It's meant to stop my ovaries from working. I said to me ed if I had a hysterectomy I bet I'd still somehow be having periods 😫

AddictedToCrisps · 16/12/2020 21:49

What a nightmare for you @longtompot Flowers

What a nightmare for you *@longtompot* Flowers
Thank you. It is a bit. I've posted about it a few times in womens health. Totally fed up with it now. I'm just hoping the ablation does its job, even if it's for a few years (I'm 49 so prob peri now)
rhowton · 17/12/2020 08:45

I'm still bleeding too! I had mine on November 13th! I wear a moon cup, but I change every 8 hours. I bled for over 130 days with my last and it turns out they had perforated my womb. I ended up having it taken out and got pregnant shortly after and then my DH had the snip. I've only had this one put in for PCOS and the bleeding is annoying. Hope yours stops soon!

AddictedToCrisps · 17/12/2020 21:22

Thank you @rhowton I’m a month ahead of you as I had mine fitted on 12th Oct. I found an NHS leaflet online which says spotting and bleeding can last for four months for some women. I hope that’s not us!!

I'm on my 3rd mirena coil snd this is the first time I've had problems with it. I got mine just before you in the 5th and I'm certain the nurse fitted it incorrectly. The first 2 I barely felt being inserted but when she removed my 2nd one I nearly hit the roof. And fitting this one was horrendous. There was blood everywhere. Even in the floor under the bed.

I've not stopped bleeding since. I used a menstrual cup and I was losing an entire periods worth of blood each day (7.5-10 ml) and I was exhausted. Cramping and being poked. Tried to get an appointment to get it checked and threads trimmed which was a nightmare too because at my surgery you need to do an econsult online then someone emails you back to say "you will be fine" or "make an appointment". I was told "it should be ok but if we feel it's necessary we can cut the threads". I then had to fight to get it checked because even though I was in pain apparently my opinion didn't matter. I was given northesterone to try which eases the bleeding but didn't help. I then got to speak to another nurse who gave me a different drug to try but it can only be used for 4 days max which gave me just over 24 hours bleed free which was amazing. I also got antibiotics just incase. I'm still bleeding now and back in the northesterone while I wait for a scan to check it out.

I only got this back in to help with a condition called pmdd but now I just want to push for a hysterectomy and be done with my ovaries.

I hope your bleeding eases soon.

AddictedToCrisps · 17/12/2020 22:00

Oh my goodness @cookiemonster5 what an ordeal! I think I need to start realising that actually my bleeding problem is nothing compared to some. I was given northisterone to take for 5 days as my coil was fitted on day 1 and the gynae didn’t want my period pushing out the coil. It stopped my period completely and I had no bleeding until a few days after taking the last tablet. Obviously since then it’s pretty much been spotting or bleeding.

I do find it exasperating that as women we are expected to just put up with endless bleeding/pain/uncertainties. I do wonder if it was a male problem whether a magical cure for all these issues would have been found decades ago. Maybe with more female specialists nowadays there will be more investigations into menstruation.

I had a coil fitted on Monday for heavy periods/suspected endo. Haven’t had the initial bleeding yet but have to say I found the fitting very painful - apparently I have a small cervix.

To be fair I’d take anything over the periods I have been having! Hopefully your body sorts itself out

itsgettingweird · 17/12/2020 22:17

I had one fitted beginning of august after 2 months of bleeding almost continuously.

I'd had northisterone twice which cut bleeding down to a dribble but it flooded again within 24 hours of stopping.

Bled continuously on coil and then had a major bleed which it came out.
I'd say it was worse than period.

Got northisterone and trans acid for 10 days which stopped it and then went to 2 northisterone a day and had another severe bleed that turned into another 10 day period.

I'm not still on northisterone twice a day whilst waiting for another coil in jan.

I've not had any spotting even since November 22nd.

I'm dreading going back to months on end of bleeding and not knowing if it'll be light or flooding g through maternity pads and super tampons every 30 minutes.

AddictedToCrisps · 18/12/2020 07:54

@itsgettingweird Nightmare! Hope things improve for you xx
