Ring doorbell hell!

Biddums · 16/12/2020 16:25

Hi all,

My neighbors door is right next to mine with only a brick between them. They have just got a ring doorbell (2 days ago) and I hate it!

Not only is the noise bloody annoying but it's covering my door. There is no way they can set it up to not cover both doors, they are just too close.

I don't like the fact whoever comes to my door is now on their bell cam. I also feel uneasy about the fact my kids will be on there, because you know kids leave the house, my house!

I'm pissed off that anything I buy, like a new TV, they will see and be able to have a good nose. Because they can rewatch and bloody pause.

So I need Mumsneters help. How do I go about this? Do I talk to them? How do I word it? How do I tell them that the bell they paid for has got to go? Do I offer to pay for it?

What if they say no? Do I have a leg to stand on here?

Or do I just get a family member with face covered in the night to nick it and smash it? Yes ring do replace nicked bells but not unlimited. I could get it nicked time and again.

AIBU here? Should I just accept that this is the way now? People videoing your door and kids? Idk I just feel they were wrong to get it without asking if I minded.

Funny enough a family member asked me if I wanted one about a year ago and I said no because it would invade my neighbors door.

You can, hypothetically, buy a wifi jammer that sits inside your door and can be shielded to block NDN without affecting your wifi.
Costs about £20.
Also prevents people stealing your car with keyless entry.

Beautifulbonnie · 16/12/2020 19:32

@JamieLeeCurtains many years ago. There was a famous thread. Where some woman was leaving her very young child on her own. Of course mumsnet didnt pass on her address. But they somehow found out who she was (mumsnet posters). I remember because I found it all too big brother type and didn't come on here for a long long time after. and they sent the police round. It was quite a long time ago now.

purplewolfie · 16/12/2020 19:32

I would get up at like 3am, put on a latex clown mask and just stare at the thing for 30 minutes. Every night.

Beautifulbonnie · 16/12/2020 19:33

@JamieLeeCurtains But could we swap Tom cruise for Tom hardy?

Tom cruise just sends shivers down my spine. After his rant too. Plus being a Scientologist.

But now Tom hardy. Yes please. Please send him round!

Beautifulbonnie · 16/12/2020 19:37

@oakleaffy his wife was on a Facebook group I was on. Was so sad when they posted at first that she'd gone missing. Then that she died. Then that he killed her. Did you watch the documentary when the police say your neighbour had video. The blood just went from his face

Excellent! Free security courtesy of the neighbours. Does anyone have a non ring similar doorbell that has great video quality? Rings are a bit pricey.

ElsieMc · 16/12/2020 19:44

Op, I can totally understand your annoyance. We had near neighbours record who came to their door and their parking space. Except they did not own the land directly in front of their house - it was a courtyard with public access. It also filmed our front garden. A PCSO took a look and they had turned the cameras to point inwards following other complaints basically rendering the camera useless. You cannot film other people's private property.

We did have a former neighbour who enjoyed filming our front garden and the view to the woods beyond. My daughters didn't like being filmed sunbathing in their own garden though. Its a fine line between protecting your property and intruding on other people's privacy which can be classed as harassment.

Europilgrim · 16/12/2020 19:44

I would hate that OP. Yanbu!

JamieLeeCurtains · 16/12/2020 19:46

@Beautifulbonnie I do recall a couple of 'intervention threads' over the years (I've been on here ages), but they all seemed to turn out to be a bit bridge-dwellery I think?

Anyway, any actor is better than Tom Cruise. True fact.

Agree. It just amazes me the amount of personal info people tend to put on here. The internet is forever don't have know Wink

I hope the OP does this.

I also hope it’s set to only go off when the doorbell is pressed.

How you’re reacting about this makes you sound so suspicious.

I’m so glad you’re not my neighbour you’re totally unreasonable 😳

SoupDragon · 16/12/2020 20:02

How you’re reacting about this makes you sound so suspicious.

It really doesn't.

I’m so glad you’re not my neighbour you’re totally unreasonable

The unreasonable ones are those who think it is acceptable to film other people's property. Totally selfish.

theantsgomarchin · 16/12/2020 20:03

This thread is absolutely ridiculous and you are being a complete princess. You chose to live in a house where your path is that close to your neighbours, deal with it. Who gives a shit if they can see you walking in and out of your house, funnily enough they could look out the window and see that anyway you know? Honestly.

I I live in a small group of six houses were three have ring video which must create some weird Vendiagram portal of hell and I shuffle around trying to get puppy to weee at fours

Miranda15110 · 16/12/2020 20:06

This is a privacy issue and should be covered by the Human Rights Act under your rights to privacy. Article 8 of the Act entitled “The Right to Respect for Private and Family Life, Home and Correspondence” means that your neighbour might well be breaking the law here.

You could speak to them and see if they can modify. If unwilling you could report to local council / police.

MAK93 · 16/12/2020 20:07

@SoupDragon
Threatening to smash up a ring doorbell incase it’s filming her kids or seeing what she has delivered? You’re seriously saying that isn’t being unreasonable? 🆘

What is wrong with having a conversation with your neighbour to try & come to a solution? Many things have been suggested in this very thread.

Crazy.

AllTheWorldIsGreen · 16/12/2020 20:12

I was going to post the link that @prh47bridge posted.

You could make regular data subject access requests and they would have to provide any footage they hold of you and your family.

MiddlesexGirl · 16/12/2020 20:12

Not sure if this has been referenced yet: ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/domestic-cctv-systems-guidance-for-people-using-cctv/
Doorbell cameras are covered.
Maybe contact ICO for more info.

Weebitawks · 16/12/2020 20:13

Lol at people who think you're "up to something" to not want your neighbours to be filming your door way.

I don't know what you can do about it but I'm in a similar situation, neighbour across the street has one and it points directly at our house. I like the neighbours but I don't like it. I don't like this whole trend of ring door bells personally. It's tech for techs sake.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 16/12/2020 20:15

I honestly don't see your problem? Surely it's good for security? We don't have a ring cam but we do have a nest cam and if anything happens on our road people (including police) come and ask us if we can look through the footage. It's been really useful lots of times. And the bonus for you is it didn't cost you anything?

Weebitawks · 16/12/2020 20:17

And fuck me calling the Op paranoid is a bit much. She's not the one whose has a stupid surveillance camera involved.
