To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

I know someone who got salmonella poisoning from mixing pet plates with human plates, but heyyyy, crack on. Salmonella is just sooooo lovely to have!

Heyyyy yeah sure you did.

Storywriter · 14/12/2020 18:56

I'd worry as well if your dog got into the habit and there was something really sharp that could injure it. Also, what if it gets into the habit and starts doing it in other people's homes? They probably won't know to remove chocolate, sharp objects, etc.

Fuckertyfuckmcfuck · 14/12/2020 18:56

It's not a good habit to introduce. Why would you? Just put it in their bowl
Most of MN don't have a loo brush but let their dogs lick their plates?
Odd

Oh yeah YABU @Randomtasks It's fucking foul letting your animals anywhere near stuff you EAT from, and mixing the crockery and stuff.

WTF is wrong with some people? Such low hygiene standards. Probably expect the NHS to look after you if you get ill though eh? Although, this type probably thinks they're entitled to the care, coz they pay N.I. contributions! Hmm

Huge relief to see two thirds of people think YABU. More people with common sense than not!

They will have contracted salmonella because they chose not to wash plates properly. Just as they would if they failed to clean a choppingboard or knife properly.

Bit of a leap.

Oooh. Which study they are in? This would warrant being written about👀

Much like those people who Hinch and Zoflora their house into an antibody desert, and then expect the NHS to look after their children when they get asthma, eczema, allergies, and every cough and cold going...

MrsMigginsMate · 14/12/2020 19:02

I really hope the people who voted YABU did so because of something understandable like behavioural concerns or fear of the dog getting hurt on knives etc. Otherwise if it's about germs then the scientific literacy on this website is appallingly bad.

YANBU.

aeiouaeiouaeiou · 14/12/2020 19:03

Yes it's fine. Ive never met a dog that doesn't!

Wheresmykimchi · 14/12/2020 19:06

Once my skin all turned furry and I barked for two days because my dog ate off my plate Sad YABU.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 14/12/2020 19:06

Licking the dishes in the dishwasher isn't gross I don't think. However we used to let our dog do this and then when i opened the dishwasher after the cycle to let the dishes cool down a bit before removing them, obviously the dog couldn't tell the difference and he'd go licking those as well. So we had to put a stop to it.

They really didn't. Might have got it from not keeping chicken cool enough in the fridge, might have got it from somebody not washing their hands properly after having a shit, might have got it from handling a snake and then not washing their hands, but they really, really didn't get it from putting two plates in the same dishwasher at 60 Celsius for two hours.
jambeforeclottedcream · 14/12/2020 19:08

Yanbu doing a prewash is how ddog earns her keep and it's one of her chores

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 14/12/2020 19:08

My dogs don’t do this. But only because I don’t have a dishwasher.

My big old boy loves to lick a plate (especially post gravy) but he’s strictly off all scraps after being described by his vet as ‘verging on the rotund’.

My younger lad has never licked a plate, but only because I’ve never offered him a plate to lick. This was a conscious decision (see comment above about his fat bastard older brother).

Both have retriever in them so are food obsessed & prone to middle aged spread. Like their (human) mum.

CottonSock · 14/12/2020 19:08

Totally disgusting. Our dog used to try it and was told off

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 19:08

@Piwlyfbicsly yes, there absolutely must be biundaries and training. Ours knew very clearly they couldn't eat from plates unless invited. But they still got to lick the plates. Same about coming in. But people are really getting worked up over this like some are here is just weird. Especially because I am fairly confident people happily eat other more non hygienic stuff🤷🏻

@sueelleker he probably did like the heat. Maybe also the slightly reflective walls🤔

oakleaffy · 14/12/2020 19:09

Our dogs used to patiently wait until the plates could be polished with their tongues..

Never even needed washing up after- saved a fortune in Fairy liquid. 😂

😂 The dog plate curse
SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 19:11

verging on the rotund
😂😂😂

HitthatroadJack · 14/12/2020 19:11

It's not the licking of the plats (or dog sleeping on beds!) that bother me. We are also a shoes-on house, dog or no dog!

But I can understand why the idea feels wrong to some people.

I don't even care or want to know if there is any risk of contamination, but I was disgusted by the poster's suggestion of putting their toilet seat in the dishwasher. It's revolting.

So I can see why some people have a problem with dogs licking a plate. Even if I don't see it myself.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/12/2020 19:12

MN’s hefty cohort of hygiene-freaks will probably have a collective heart attack, but to me there’s nowt wrong with it - a good pre-wash before the dishwasher, and the dog loves it.

I used to let ours (RIP) lick plates before they went in the DW, and she would do a very thorough job on anything like a saucepan I’d made a cheese sauce in, or a dish that had held fish pie. Not to mention the roasting tin - oh doggy joy! She’d hold it down with one paw and keep at it until barely a molecule remained.

Might add that the whole family was always disgustingly healthy.

(Too much hygiene is very bad for you!)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/12/2020 19:12
Shock

I did not know this was a thing!

cuppateabiscuits · 14/12/2020 19:12

Your dog Licks it's ass not matter what that is enough to grosse me out
However got the dishwasher is

yeOldeTrout · 14/12/2020 19:12

I let the cat lick my plate so it's fine by me, OP.
Cat shares my water cup sometimes, too.

Those of you appalled should assume everyone else is equally slovenly. It obviously doesn't matter, human immune systems can cope, may even benefit.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 19:13

Toilet seat... Might be better than chopping board😂😁
