To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

It wouldn’t bother me but I wouldn’t do it because I wouldn’t want my dog getting in the habit of it

ParlezVousWronglais · 14/12/2020 19:16

Hold on a minute, how did they know it was HUMAN POO?

myhobbyisouting · 14/12/2020 19:17

🤢 it's minging

But then I sit there silently (in normal times) while my friends let their dogs lick the plates clean in a pub we often visit for food.

pessimistiquerealistique · 14/12/2020 19:20

Dogs lick their bottoms, you know, so the water must be really hot to kill anything harmful. On the other hand, it's a bad habit for the dog.

cologne4711 · 14/12/2020 19:20

@Closetbeanmuncher

Dog licks its arsehole then licks your plates...

Mmm delicious.

Even worse it licks other dogs' bottoms. You know where its own bottom has been!
SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 19:22

Some humans lick bottoms🙈😂

AlternativePerspective · 14/12/2020 19:22

It’s revolting and teaches bad habits because it teaches the dog to scrounge for food. Can’t abide dogs who sit in front of you waiting for you to finish eating so that they get to lick the plates. Grim.

Same for people who put their mooncup in the dishwasher...

Oh and, the dishwasher does not sterilise everything, it washes at 60 degrees which is nowhere near hot enough to sterilise.

AnSionnachGlic · 14/12/2020 19:22

My dog likes to roll around on wet towels ,when my kids are finished their showers. I think he likes shed skin cells😖

that's why you don't share your food with randoms.
SimonJT · 14/12/2020 19:23

@HitthatroadJack But unless you never eat out or never eat off anything used by another adult you will be eating off things that have previously been used by people who do have oral sex.

fourandnomore · 14/12/2020 19:23

That makes me feel a bit sick. I don’t have pets though do maybe that’s why, so I’m not used to their behaviour around things like this.

Dogs are filthy but they're dogs.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 19:26

60 degrees does kill bacteria efficiently especially when it's longer program. It won't have same effect of it's 5 minutel like if it's 100.
It doesn't "sterilise" but it sanitises well enough, which means it's safe.

Isteamagoodham · 14/12/2020 19:27

I have seen people let their dogs do this and I always find the idea of it quite gross... ...but then, I don't really like dogs so admittedly I'm probably biased! Grin

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 19:27

I don't know why I have sterilise on commas like this🤦

Exactly. I don't even share food with my relatives. God knows what they lick in their spare time. I am sure they're not that filthy but I could only share food with my DCs and DH.

SurferRona · 14/12/2020 19:29

@cologne4711 *Me too. Bleugh. I hope dog-friendly pubs and cafes don't think this is ok!

Mind you, I know cats are much cleaner than dogs but I'm not keen on them sitting on worktops and counters either.*

Really? These same cats which lick their bums A LOT, and cat poo is at least a factor worse than dog poo....yeuch Xmas Envy

WhoNeedsShoesAnyway · 14/12/2020 19:30

Um does noone rinse their dishes before loading them in?!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 19:30

It's nkt about sharing food with bottom licking humans. It's about using the cutlery or glass, for example Do you refuse to use cutlery or drink from a glass in other houses in case bottom lover used them before? 😂
Sorry. I am honestly giggling here at the thought now.

pigsDOfly · 14/12/2020 19:31

I wouldn't let my dog lick human plates, I find the idea revolting, in the same way I don't let her lick my face.

Her mouth is foul. She eats rabbit droppings and will snaffle cat poo when she can if she's manages to find some on a walk.

Apart from that, anything containing things like onion or garlic will be toxic to dogs, and allowing a dog to lick up too much fatty food could result in a dog having an episode of pancreatitis.

Makes more sense to me to just put the plates and dishes in the dishwasher without involving the dog. Pleasanter for me and safer for the dog.

AlternativePerspective · 14/12/2020 19:31

And the difference between humans and dogs is that for the most part humans brush their teeth etc.

Not like the dog who runs out into the garden and eats a pile of cat pooh, then goes for a lie down in the lounge to lick its arse and then goes to lick your plates.

I wouldn’t eat food cooked by anyone who let their dogs do this. And I am a dog owner.

Suzi888 · 14/12/2020 19:31

Yuck! But I couldn’t let mine do it anyway as he has health issues.

How do you know they used mouthwash before drinking or eating😂

Just as with washing hands whilst singing Happy Birthday, the detergent and the water removes bacteria and viruses. And then there's the final rinse, which is often well over 80 Celsius. They don't sterilise, as to do that you'd need an autoclave, but they definitely sanitise.

I do but looks like a dog could save some money on the water bill.
