To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

My dog does this and it's annoying, especially when I'm trying to load the dishwasher so he gets told off. My other dog is partial to drinking the tea dregs if a mug is left where she can reach it though.

Tangledtresses · 14/12/2020 23:26
@tangledtresses there's are group on Facebook, extreme dishwashers 😂 there's a lot more but loo brush is most definitely the grossest 🤮
Well you learn something new here every day!! What else do they put in their
I'm off to find the thread 😆😆

There's a section of the dishwasher that when changing the filter I have sliced my hand on. Check that yours won't do this if dog licks it. The steam and heat sterilizes everything anyway so doesn't seem gross to me

A dishwasher doesn't sterilize anything. It doesn't get anywhere hot enough.
ImnotCarolineHirons · 14/12/2020 23:51

I have a dog and fairly basic domestic standards but it's a no from me.
My dishwasher is several years old and it's main wash says it's 65c. That to me is nowhere near hot enough to get rid of whatever has been in my dogs mouth (and we live rurally and walk over fields everyday so no doubt there's random wild animal poo as a snack on the run).

Maybe more modern ones reach higher temps but I still wouldn't let my dog lick plates as he needs to know that our food isn't his food.

Cats are not cleaner than dogs btw. Cats on kitchen worktops makes me queasy too (we don't have cats, but when I see other peoples cats arses where they prepare food, urgh).

happystone · 14/12/2020 23:55

I don’t like to see it my mums dog used to do this. But it doesn’t do any harmSmile

Elfieishere · 14/12/2020 23:58

Your partner is right.

It’s gross.

Ariela · 15/12/2020 00:38

It's not a good idea - how does the dog distinguish between plates he is allowed to lick clean and plates he isn't? Dogs have their own bowl. Food only goes in there. Begging isn't allowed.

(I'm fuming as DH has allowed the dog on the bed when I was away, I now have to barricade the door to prevent the dog going in the bedroom)

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 15/12/2020 00:38

It's not that awful, but I wouldn't want my dog doing it. Don't know why, as rationally I know the plates are getting a really good clean but something is just eww about it!

YerWanIsGettinNotions · 15/12/2020 00:45

I know academically that a dishwasher gives everything a good clean, but... bleurrrgh. My MIL's dogs do this and I hate to see it. I'm terrible for my face giving away my thoughts all the time so I must be sitting there in their kitchen with a sour face on me watching the German Shepherd slobber all over the cutlery and MIL looking on fondly and asking him if he likes that, the dotey boy.

I know they get properly cleaned before we get served our dinner with them again, but it still makes me queasy to see it.

(Not a dog person, if you hadn't guessed!)

baubll · 15/12/2020 00:51

@pigsDOfly well I think I might change my view then, I was under the impression the heat and steam was like sterilizing. I appreciate the correction really!!!

ParlezVousWronglais · 15/12/2020 00:51

@crumpetsandcoffee

Some people put their toilet brush in the dishwasher, in comparison I'd say this is pretty harmless
Urban myth. Doesn’t happen.

If you train your dog, then when you say no they don’t touch the thing that you don’t want them to. 🤷🏻‍♀️

MerchantOfVenom · 15/12/2020 01:23

”Some people put their toilet brush in the dishwasher, in comparison I'd say this is pretty harmless”

Urban myth. Doesn’t happen.

I bet it does, judging by the feral behaviour being paraded on this thread. Envy

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 15/12/2020 01:30

I’m not a fan of it. I won’t let our cats lick at any of our plates, sit in the worktops etc but each to their own.

Hkyvvse · 15/12/2020 01:40

Would you be happy for your dog to shit on the plate or scoot their bits across it before it goes in dishwasher?

Surely their mouths are full of bacteria from cleaning themselves?

I’d want my crockery autoclaved!

Furries · 15/12/2020 02:05

I am a soppy animal lover, but this is a big fat no for me!

As a giant breed, I was really conscious from the beginning that she would be blooming big, so I wanted her to have manners - didn’t want her barging people out the way/knocking them over etc. Also, the larger the breed, the shorter the lifespan, so I didn’t want to indulge her with treats all the time. Plus, when her head can easily rest on the worktop, encouraging “plate surfing” not a great idea!

So, her food is her food and our food is our food. If a roast is cooked, then she’ll sometimes get a bit of leftovers mixed in with her bowl.

I’ve just never wanted her to eat something that she hadn’t been given “permission” for. There have been spates of dodgy stuff left in parks etc (sausages stuffed with nails) and so I’d rather she isn’t encouraged to eat stuff that’s not in her bowl.

Makes it sound like she has a joyless existence, but it really isn’t!

Furries · 15/12/2020 02:34

@LastTrainEast

I'm never surprised by anything a dog owner will be prepared to do.

I'm a bit surprised at the risk to the dog of letting it eat human food, but there's not a dog shortage so that's ok.

Yup, all absolutely fine! What a weird post.
PattyPan · 15/12/2020 02:48

I hope I never get invited to dinner at the house of anyone that thinks this is ok 🤢

Bettysnow · 15/12/2020 02:48

No chance! Personally i love animals and have two large dogs and a cat but i don't encourage this sort of behaviour! Animals have their bowls and i have mine! We all stick to our own food

Santagetinmybubble · 15/12/2020 02:54

Disgusting. For the ones saying it’s fine it gets washed, is there a line? Would you Chuck your loo brush or dildos in to give them a good clean? Or do you think that’s gross? Genuinely interested in peoples thoughts. Side note- you’re not supposed to rinse dishes first.

MerchantOfVenom · 15/12/2020 03:05

To those saying it’s OK because it’s not harmful, the dishwasher (arguably) gets the crockery clean - some of us have a slightly higher benchmark than that.

I would judge people with dog lickers in the same way I’d judge someone who picks their nose or farts in public.

Just a bit backward/clueless and feral.

‘Disgust’ is an emotion that you can’t help feeling, any more than you can help feeling happy, sad or angry. So as long as dog lickers know that a sizeable chunk of people (two thirds, according to this thread) are actually repulsed by you and your dog (presumably people you like), then crack on.

PerveenMistry · 15/12/2020 04:32

@HotSince63

It’s a perk of being a dog.

I don't know why but that's really tickled me Grin

Me too.

Mine loves to "do his chore" of licking the plate clean before it is washed.

Worried234 · 15/12/2020 05:14

This is revolting.

Some of you are fucking rank.

Oh, and a dishwasher does not 'sterilise' anything!!

amusedtodeath1 · 15/12/2020 05:29

Onions, Garlic, pepper, chocolate, grapes, raisins and there's a load more I can't think of at the moment, but they're all toxic to dogs. I couldn't give a stuff about the hygiene aspects (dishwasher should be hot enough to kill any bacteria), but I wouldn't risk my dogs health by letting her do this.
