To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

Suuuuuuuuuure

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/12/2020 21:45

That’s seriously gross. Also what if there was something in that is bad for dogs eg chocolate.

QuestionEverythingOrBeASheep · 14/12/2020 21:50

a lot of human food is toxic for dogs. Also you may have to pick up your fair share of squirts as it may aggravate their digestive system. I don't allow my dog ay human food.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/12/2020 21:51

Human food: not fit for a dog.

Runs screaming 😳😳😳👀😱😱😱😱😱

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 22:17

This has more emotional responses than peeing in a shower😂

deste · 14/12/2020 22:20

Never.

crumpetsandcoffee · 14/12/2020 22:22

@tangledtresses there's are group on Facebook, extreme dishwashers 😂 there's a lot more but loo brush is most definitely the grossest 🤮

I don’t think you are at risk of catching anything, but I don’t think it’s a good habit. You don’t want the dog going crazy every time she hears you scrapping the plates to put in the washer.

My dad used to train dogs so we have never fed him off a plate nor does he lick the dishwasher but he still goes absolutely bonkers when he hears plates being cleared away.

My dog that is not my dad Grin

Quite lucky on this one... one dog is too lazy to raise his game to get to the plates (sausage dogs, it's a bridge too far). The other is petrified of the garlic press for reasons known best to himself, so he gives the dishwasher a wide berth, just in case it's hiding in there ready to pounce.

It's a fear I'm happy to nurture.

Aw wee soul. I'm just picturing a garlic press chasing him 🤣
Tootsietootie · 14/12/2020 22:29

Nooo! You mustn't let your puppy do this. Nothing to do with hygiene though it's a bit rank but because of their poor teeth. I would do anything to protect their teeth because not only is it really fucking expensive to get them taken out but it causes of distress.

WingingItSince1973 · 14/12/2020 22:42

I have two dogs and we don't let them do this. They have enough perks as it is 😂 I just find it a bit gross and a bad habit for them to expect it. They pester me enough when I'm cooking or even thinking about food 🤣 Yes I do wash my hands after touching my pets too. X

MerchantOfVenom · 14/12/2020 22:59

Honestly, this thread.

Can open, worms everywhere. 🤢

I had no idea so many people were so grim, in terms of what they put in the dishwasher, and what they let their dogs do.

No, I don’t let my dog lick my face. How hard is it??

And I am realising that rinsing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher is clearly a minority sport. Because if you rinse, surely that automatically makes the dog not interested. But even if they were, telling them ‘no’ the first few times they try would mean it’s nipped in the bud.

StoneofDestiny · 14/12/2020 22:59

Utterly rank! 🤮🤮

Blowingagale · 14/12/2020 23:00

I find this gross. It’s an instinctive reaction though rather than scientific. I’m sure the plates get clean but it’s more the idea.

I also had relatives who did impose boundaries with a dog which would climb up to the table for food and it was not pleasant.

CuppaZa · 14/12/2020 23:06

Fucking gross. I have a dog BTW

ippydippay · 14/12/2020 23:09

I have a dog but this is beyond gross 🤢 I once saw my SIL allowing her dogs to do this and I try to avoid eating at her house at all costs now, turns my stomach. The dishwasher does not sterilise, it does not reach boiling point, otherwise non of us would have sterilising machines for babies bottles! Dogs eat poo fgs😬

NotJust3SmallWords · 14/12/2020 23:09

I often feed my dog his food off the same plates we eat off (and we haven't died yet...) so I don't think it's gross. I stop him from doing it though in case the plates have something toxic to dogs on them or he licks a sharp knife.

copperoliver · 14/12/2020 23:10

You have to be careful incase you have been eating something he is not allowed, there maybe residue on the plates. X

LastTrainEast · 14/12/2020 23:13

I'm never surprised by anything a dog owner will be prepared to do.

I'm a bit surprised at the risk to the dog of letting it eat human food, but there's not a dog shortage so that's ok.

Hmm
QueenoftheIceAge · 14/12/2020 23:20

I got told off by DP for letting our dog do this recently, saying “it’s not a fucking autoclave!”.
