To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

@HitthatroadJack

Some people really need to get a grip. You do realise there's nothing more unhealthy and bad for you than living in a zoflora house don't you Grin

You don't have to be ok with it, but come on, no need for the ridiculous over-reactions

Someone should do a Venn diagram of people who think it's gross and people who follow Mrs Hinch on social media...you know for science. Wink

(I'm being light-hearted guys don't come at me! Grin)

My dog has never tried to lick plates in the dishwasher - but I think that's inky because the idea has never occurred to him must hide this thread from him just in case. We do give him the odd plate though. He occasionally licks us and if he needs medication the only way he will take it is mixed with crea, cheese and licked off any willing hand. Oh and he is old so has been known to dribble a bit when he's desperate for a wee but too idle to go out in the rain. His favourite snack is a spot of cat poo and he sleeps on our bed, the sofa and any warm armchair.

I realise that our disgusting habits will alarm some of you, but frankly you are not the kind of people who I would ever want in my house anyway, so win win.

BTW my dog has never smelled as disgusting and rancid as my teenage sons bedroom.......

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 20:27

But if dog licks your face you just can't properly sanitise it.

However, thanks to our technology advances we can now wash the offending licked dishes in temperatures, you usually can't by hand so it's pretty meh about what happened to it before.
I used some my food bowls when repotting plants for the soil and plants (I was a beginner with no proper "equipmemt") and nothing bad happened.

Praise the dishwasher gods!🙏

Does Miss Hinch not allow it then Grin

Spoilsport! It's Mumsnet for heaven's sake, there is every need for the ridiculous over-reactions, where else am I to get a belly-laugh on a Monday evening?

MrsMigginsMate · 14/12/2020 20:32

I dunno @Randomtasks, but she does like to use a shocking amount of zoflora so I can imagine she would disapprove! Grin

HotSince63 · 14/12/2020 20:33

Does Miss Hinch not allow it then

Have you seen the size of her dog, Jabba the Mutt, he licks the dishes and then some.

VestaTilley · 14/12/2020 20:33

YABVU. It’s disgusting and unhygienic - plus bad for the dogs health.

I say this as someone who likes dogs.

If I knew you did this I’d never agree to eat in your house. I’m not one of the mad Mumsney women who cleans the house every day either, but this is horrible.

Also dangerous- what if the dogs cut themselves on a knife in the dishwasher?

Yuck. Stop this.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/12/2020 20:35

For all of those who think this is disgusting: how do you wash the chopping boards, knives etc from raw chicken?

Tangledtresses · 14/12/2020 20:35

My friend let her dog do this

The dog at 10 has just had all her teeth removed 😬 she was in a lot of pain for 4 years 😥 so I'd say no!

My dogs are strong colt not allowed to do this as A: it's gross

But also mine all have a full set of teeth aged 14

moonpig23 · 14/12/2020 20:36

That is disgusting 🤮

crumpetsandcoffee · 14/12/2020 20:37

Some people put their toilet brush in the dishwasher, in comparison I'd say this is pretty harmless

likeamillpond · 14/12/2020 20:40

I think it's disgusting and it would put me off eating or letting my child eat at your house.
Dogs lick their own and other dogs bums. Plus they could have worms.

DBML · 14/12/2020 20:40

I loathe pets in the house full stop...
I’d be mortified if I found out a plate I was eating off had been previously licked by a dog or a cat. It’s one of the reasons I always turn down drinks or food when visiting people I don’t know very well.

If that’s the way you like to live though, go for it. It’s your business not mine. I’m just telling you I think it’s gross because you asked.

I also don’t understand how people can sleep with their animals, especially under the bedcovers...or how people can let their animals lick their faces and mouths. 🤮

LST · 14/12/2020 20:47

Gosh I'm loving the pearl clutching going on on this thread 😂 Its brilliant!

Frankola · 14/12/2020 21:08

It wouldn't bother me for my own hygiene because as you've said, they'll be getting washed.

However, there are quite a few foods dogs shouldn't eat because they can cause them harm. So I'm not sure its in the best interest for the dog overall Confused

I'd also say that letting the dog lick the plates with food on is a bit of a gateway allowance to them begging for food from your plate when eating or trying to take food from plates left on the side.

I have a spaniel and if we give an inch she tries to take a mile so that's something she'd definitely try it on!

SOmuchsparkle · 14/12/2020 21:14

It's grim.
I don't let my dog do this.
She only has dog suitable food & portions are very controlled.
Just no!

Sorka · 14/12/2020 21:17

That’s disgusting.

Yeahnahmum · 14/12/2020 21:18

Great idea. Until he cuts his tongue on a stake knife.
Also yuck

Wheresmykimchi · 14/12/2020 21:19

I actually think its minging and wouldn't let my wee pal do it but this thread is brilliant Grin

Geordieoldgirl · 14/12/2020 21:29

YANBU but I don't like our dog to do this. I think it makes her think it is ok to take food from other plates ( which may still be in use! ) Eg I once answered door during breakfast, came back to find dog had had my toast and marmalade.

Bananaman123 · 14/12/2020 21:33

My dog doesnt get the cha ce, i lick them all first

BefuddledPerson · 14/12/2020 21:35

I try really hard to be relaxed about it but if I am honest I don't like eating in houses with animals because the owners tend to be a lot less worried about dog spit and cat sick than I am.

I'm sure technically the dishwasher is hot enough but it makes me feel Envy (not envy)

Fishfingersandwichplease · 14/12/2020 21:37

Yuk no l would hate that
