To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

I don't allow my dog to lick the plates in the dishwasher, I'm pretty strict about what the dog eats. I also don't want him to think human plates can also be dog plates in case he develops a begging habit when I'm eating, I would find that quite annoying. If he gets human food treats then they go in his bowl. I wouldn't be concerned about hygiene.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 19:52

Oh no I couldn't put a moon cup in there
I wouldn't put the toilet seat in either. It's in the head that it doesn't belong there.
But considering hygiene and bacteria, in practice, it's no issue because it gets adequately washed.

Interesting article about the health benefits of pet ownership, including boosting the immune system.

Spidey66 · 14/12/2020 19:56

The one thing I'll acknowledge is it's not teaching great habits. I'll hold my hands up to that one. But as far as I'm concerned the dishwasher cleans any random germs the dog may add to the plates.

I’m only halfway through reading the thread and already feeling queasy Envy

I had no idea so many dog and cat owners were this fucking gross. Surely you all know the plates should be rinsed clean of food residue before entering the dishwasher? Otherwise it’s just swilling around in a scummy (but it’s ok, it’s really hot), soup all over your stuff and clogging up the filter. 🤮

I love my dog to bits and want him to live as long as possible. Therefore, he is not allowed human food scraps. Also, he licks other dogs’ genitals/arses and eats shit. Actual shit. Horse, rabbit, fox, deer - whatever he can scoff before I notice and drag him away. Beyond revolting to let that same tongue anywhere near a plate I’m going to eat from.

LisaLee333 · 14/12/2020 19:59

There are a small amount of weird deluded people on here. TOTALLY in denial. Absolutely determined that their manky mutt couldn't POSSIBLY bring any nasties home to them, bugs, viruses, diseases etc.

Probably the same type of individuals, who put mooncups and toilet brushes in the dishwasher, never clean their oven, only change the bedsheets three times a year, and pick bogies out of their nose and eat them. 🤮🤮🤮

Vile VILE VILE

As I said, what a relief to see that two thirds of people are exercising some common sense. (According to the survey) and don't exhibit such foul, putrid habits as letting your DOG lick your plates. BLEH! Shock

Exactly this. Bet their personal hygiene habits are fucking grim. 🤮

To think, these foul articles walk amongst us in society.

What a hideous thought! Shock

Curious if the dog owners who wouldn't do this manage to live with their dog without it ever licking their face? Because no matter how hard you try they will always sneak a little licky kiss in there....so what do you do? Scrub your face with bleach to sterilise it every time?

MrsMigginsMate · 14/12/2020 20:05

And do these clean freak dog owners never think about the wine glass they use at a restaurant or the knife and fork at their in law's house? You do realise they have people's spit all over them before going in the dishwasher right?

There's got to be some parody posts in this thread, some of this stuff is crackers.

Eew! What if you just pick them and don’t eat them?

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 14/12/2020 20:06

I think it’s grim (as owner of two dogs also). Both my dogs like to eat cat poo if the can find it Envy

If you're afraid of dog saliva then surely the lick to your mouth is WAY higher risk than a piece of porcelain that previously had saliva on but has since been washed for 2 hours at extremely high temperatures with soap and rinsed repeatedly. Just from an ick perspective there's no contest.
Daisy829 · 14/12/2020 20:08

Ugh my dog does this. Drives me insane. He also eats horse poo so licking plates is an improvement on that. Vile creature. He’s so cute though I can’t help but adore him.

Barmyfarmy · 14/12/2020 20:09

OP this is vile. Just as vile as people who let their dogs 'kiss' them. AKA slobber all over their open mouths and faces spreading arse germs and essence of freshly lick dog bollocks. Disgusting

AlternativePerspective · 14/12/2020 20:09

It seems that all the plate licking dog owners will do anything to defend their substandard hygiene habits.

Are people really so stupid that they think there’s a comparison between someone drinking from a glass in a restaurant, and a dog standing there deliberately licking all the plates? Really?

Ultimately if a dog caught a lick of your plate you would pull it away and yes, of course it would go in the dishwasher, but if people can’t see the difference between that and actively giving plates to the dog to lick then I despair.

user1471481356 · 14/12/2020 20:11

That is absolutely disgusting 🤢

It’s equally vile to let a dog kiss your mouth, and no, mine has never done this, as it is to have the dog lick the plates in the dishwasher.

if you allow either then you’re pretty gross...

My dog is never allowed to lick my face for the very obvious reasons I mentioned previously. If he licks my hand I wash it immediately. Just as I make sure to wash my hands before preparing food simply because I have a dog.

Gobsmacked that not everyone has the same standards. This thread is a real eye-opener.

The instruction manuals for the two dishwashers I've had both said not to rinse the dishes, just to scrape food off. They're smart dishwashers and tailor the programme to how dirty the dishes are. Dishwashers also have a rinse programme.
MrsMigginsMate · 14/12/2020 20:15

So do you lot also believe that cold sores are spread via coffee cups at restaurants? That you can catch flu by using the washed fork of a previous customer? That a pot wash (aka a huge dishwasher) isn't cleaning off viruses?

You should have a word with SAGE, they may be able to stop the spread of Corona if only you share your incredible new insights with them! Grin

I refuse to believe your dog has never sneaked a lick in while you were bending down to tie your shoe or something. It's literally the way they greet each other, you can train them all you like but you're telling big fat porkies if you expect anyone to believe your dog has never once, even as a puppy, got a bit carried away.

My question is what happened to you? You lived to tell the tale right? So what did you do, bleach mouthwash or was it a zoflora face mask? Grin

2bazookas · 14/12/2020 20:18

@HotSince63

As well as licking the plates in the dishwasher...

Given the opportunity my dog will steal a pair of my knickers out of the washing basket and spend a happy few minutes licking the gusset until someone notices what he's doing and takes them off him.

OMG, TMI. I just hope you launder your knickers in a boil wash
HitthatroadJack · 14/12/2020 20:18

Some people really need to get a grip. You do realise there's nothing more unhealthy and bad for you than living in a zoflora house don't you Grin

You don't have to be ok with it, but come on, no need for the ridiculous over-reactions
