To recycle Christmas cards the moment I receive them

Hellotheresweet · 14/12/2020 07:43

I open them, read them, Chuck them in recycling.

I just don’t like the clutter and seems odd to set aside space for cards from people I hardly know.

Never binned. Always recycled.

Anyone else so.... brutal! Grin

That does seem mean-spirited. Do you do the same with birthday cards?

I don't get that many Christmas cards these days, so they don't take up much space.

IDontMindMarmite · 14/12/2020 07:48

I mean it's your house you can do what you like but it's a bit Grinch! It's only for a few days.

Hellotheresweet · 14/12/2020 07:50

No way to birthday cards, I keep them up for a week and extend birthdays for as long as possible! But then I receive birthday cards only from close friends and family and they mean something.

I just opened a generic one from a neighbour i haven’t seen or spoken to all year.

Why would I display a card from her in my small flat?!

SarahBellam · 14/12/2020 07:51

I end up leaving them lying on tables for a few days before recycling them.

ImAKaren · 14/12/2020 07:51

I'm not fond of Xmas cards either. Most of them are so ugly. YANBU to discard them -
but YABU to throw them straight into the recycling as the majority of cards these days contain glitter, foil or other non-recyclable components. You need to sort and maybe tear the recyclable backs from the adorned fronts.

CanIGetARefund · 14/12/2020 07:57

I am pleased to hear I am not the only one who does this with Christmas cards. I do display a particularly beautiful or home made one. But those are rare.

This!
Dyrne · 14/12/2020 08:25

Why do you get so many from people you “hardly know”?

We don’t get many, and they’re always from friends/family so it’s nice. I run a piece of ribbon along the mantelpiece and peg the cards to it so they end up being an additional Christmas decoration for the year.

I haven't received one with glitter yet, just the cheapest of the cheap ugly crap. I wish I was brave enough to put mine straight in recycling OP! but my family already think I'm grinchy enough about Christmas decorations being clutter. I'm calling them Covid cards this year. I've just hidden them in a pile so far. They are too ugly to display.Grin
MillieMooBee · 14/12/2020 08:29

Tbh I might do this too. I kind of leave them somewhere and then get rid as soon as I can. Lol!

I haven't sent Christmas cards in years apart from to my parents and one for my daughter. I just don't see the point!!

DappledThings · 14/12/2020 08:31

I'm the opposite. I can't stand my birthday so birthday cards go straight in the recycling the second they are open. But I bought a new rack to display Christmas cards this week that hangs on the back of the door so they look good. And they will stay up till Twelfth Night with everything else.

RaspberryCoulis · 14/12/2020 08:32

I haven't sent Christmas cards for ages and get very few - people know how pointless I think they are.

I don't "display" any which we receive, straight into the recycling.

hettyhooverdoover · 14/12/2020 08:33

Omg no. Someones gone to the effort of sending them, I couldn't do that!

luckylavender · 14/12/2020 08:35

I find that so mean spirited. But then I also find it deliberately provocative to put this in AIBU. Your house your rules, why do you feel the need to ask the question of strangers if not 'look at me?'

dementedma · 14/12/2020 08:36

No. Even if I dont like them i appreciate that someone has been kind enough to think of me. It would feel very ungrateful to just bin them.

MerryGrinchmas1 · 14/12/2020 08:39

I cut the pictures out and use them as tags for presents (my family has done this for decades). I'll keep ones up that are from close family, but ones from school and acquaintances get the chop!

houseinthesnow · 14/12/2020 08:41

Yes I do the same. I can't bear the clutter. I love the sentiments of the cards and read them all, but I don't need to look at them for three weeks....

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 14/12/2020 08:41

Straight in the bin here. I hate cards. Normally from people you never hear from throughout the year but they suddenly want to spread a bit of festivity Hmm

Iggly · 14/12/2020 08:42

I like Christmas cards and will string them up - don’t get me wrong, I’m so relieved clearing down the decorations in jan, but love a bit of sparkle etc at Christmas.

Yabu OP. Such a waste. Maybe say you don’t want cards and give an environmental reason or something instead.

Iggly · 14/12/2020 08:42

Yeah god forbid that people see Christmas as a time to spread a bit of cheer and say a little hello. Such horrendous people.

Hmm
KaptainKaveman · 14/12/2020 08:44

YABU and mean spirited. What you ought to do is tell people not to send them in the first place.

Do you send out cards yourself? If you do then you're a hypocrite.

Rewis · 14/12/2020 08:47

I feel that recycling immediately is a bit cold, so I wait till new years.

soughsigh · 14/12/2020 08:54

I can't stand the majority of Christmas decorations, I think they are awfully tacky. But I do like having cards up. We just hang them on a ribbon so they are not taking up all of the surface space. I love a good round Robin to, even though a lot of people seem to despise them.

jabice · 14/12/2020 08:56

Howling at this 😂😂😂.
My family are the same and find them totally pointless.

They would leave them out until Boxing Day and then all cards straight in the bin.

They are so pointless. I never understand when people post them to their relatives etc. Just send a text nowadays! Same thing.

raffle · 14/12/2020 08:57

I’m the same. I open them and read them and appreciate the sentiment. But then I put them in the bin.
