Usually we would be in the city centre, seeing the Xmas lights and markets, meeting with friends, getting some drinks and eating out for dinner. We get home slightly merry sozzled and very much in the Xmas spirit. That's not going to happen this year obviously, so can you share with me your Xmas Eve dinner suggestions? Do you do something special or save the effort for Xmas day?

Baked fish with wine, olives and tomatoes is our traditional Xmas eve go to.

MyristicaFragrans · 13/12/2020 20:26

We always have a special pork pie. Its eaten hot/warm on Christmas Eve but is also good cold on Boxing Day with other leftovers and a big salad.

Beecham · 13/12/2020 20:28

Small amounts of various things like prawns, crab, smoked salmon, sausage rolls, mini pizza, cheese, green salad, olives, nice bread etc. Cava for us, sprite for the kids.

Another thing we've done in the past is cheese fondue with crudités and French bread to dip

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 13/12/2020 20:30

We order in chinese food. Nothing says christmas to us like duck rolls, chow mein and salt and pepper prawns.

Takeaway for us :)

purplecorkheart · 13/12/2020 20:38

A local restaurant is open and we have a lunchtime reservation made. They normally do quite a limited menu so most of our party order their roasted beef. Dinner will be an grazing affair of cold meat, canapes, pate etc.

A bowl of marshmallow matey probs. My DH wont be in till approx 8.30 so i have that while feeding baby. Then im never hungry so....maybe a mince pie, prosecco and those german/polish biscuit/cake things 💕

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 13/12/2020 20:42

Christmas eve is my favourite eating day of the year!

Dd and I will be busy bees baking cakes, bread and biscuits in the morning (quick dog walk and lunch) then it's all adding the finishing touches and making the sausage rolls. Once we're done DH will do the boring stuff like pulled pork, homemade chips and salad, whack it all out buffet style and enjoy with a Xmas film.

When we are so stuffed we can't eat any more, we get the chocolates out.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 13/12/2020 20:43

Normally we go to a friends houseparty but not this year so I think a lazy buffet on paper plates!

Oopsiedaisyy · 13/12/2020 20:44

Party foods, easy ones from the oven, and prosecco

GrandTheftWalrus · 13/12/2020 20:45

Christmas Dinner as I'm nightshift on Xmas night so want to enjoy my dinner and not have to go to work afterwards

LajesticVantrashell · 13/12/2020 20:48

Fish pie, samfire and a nice bottle of white. Followed by a mountain of present wrapping and "It's a wonderful life"

Soosiesoo · 13/12/2020 20:55

Love reading these threads Xmas Smile

We usually do party food and wine, but our two DDs love Chinese food this year, so have requested a take away ... fine by me Wink

Chestnut and chorizo soup and crusty bread. Always feels festive and yet not too much work. I tend to be baking mince pies and gingerbread so don't want to go all out on dinner.

Liking the fish platter ideas.

HelplessProcrastinator · 13/12/2020 21:20

Baked camembert and lots of other cheeses, houmous, olives, posh crackers etc. With good red wine for in front of the of the log fire and TV.

Simplyunacceptable · 13/12/2020 21:21

I always do a buffet. Nice drinks, tapas foods plus some classics like quiche and pizza. The DC love it. I bake a snowman shaped cake every year too.

HellequineViriato · 14/12/2020 07:19

@LondonStone we do sometimes do the chickpeas with a little bit of paprika to serve but it gets a bit much if you have a decent piece of bacalhau. Some people also do boiled egg as well which is nice but again it can be food overload. I also bake broas and do stuff like sonhos which are little doughnuts and I'm doing a Torta de Natal this year as we can't travel to the Portuguese shops we would ordinarily to get sweet stuff because of lockdowns. On the 25th I do a veggie Christmas dinner as we don't eat meat ( we do eat fish) so that can be from a number of different recipes and we do the traditional veg. Sadly, my husband hates dried fruit so a lot of the UK Christmas stuff he doesn't really like. So, we tend to compromise and each gets a bit of what they like. DS tends to fall in between and likes bits of each.

lollipoprainbow · 14/12/2020 07:19

Sausage rolls, dips, nibbles, Camembert and crusty bread.
