To ask what you will be having for Xmas Eve dinner?

Usually we would be in the city centre, seeing the Xmas lights and markets, meeting with friends, getting some drinks and eating out for dinner. We get home slightly merry sozzled and very much in the Xmas spirit. That's not going to happen this year obviously, so can you share with me your Xmas Eve dinner suggestions? Do you do something special or save the effort for Xmas day?

Buffet type party food, followed by Yule log or mince pies.

Basically, I do as much as possible of the prep for Christmas Day on Christmas Eve, so dinner is something easy.

Sparklingbrook · 13/12/2020 18:27

@malificent7

I get a baking camenbert with crudites. Might try something else this year like a buffet/ party food.
Have you been on the Camembert thread? It's very Marmite by all accounts.
tanguero · 13/12/2020 18:28

Pot Noodles, and Vimto.

turkeymince · 13/12/2020 18:29

FatherTedsBankAccount · 13/12/2020 18:29

Lobster frites!

spanieleyes · 13/12/2020 18:30

Domino's pizza and champagne.

cheninblanc · 13/12/2020 18:30

I make a nice home made nandos, so I'm thinking of doing that as take aways maybe very busy and I can cook it easy, plus everyone here loves it!

adogisforlife91 · 13/12/2020 18:31

Fish Pie - I make it ahead and keep it in the freezer

BangingOn · 13/12/2020 18:33

We have our Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve (and a massive cheeseboard, party food and champagne Christmas Day) but on the 23rd we usually have ham and loaded potato skins, so there are left overs of both for Boxing Day.

Plsv87 · 13/12/2020 18:33

Ham, egg and chips - dh makes a rum and jerk ham, takes hours and the cloves make the house smell very Christmassy

Ragwort · 13/12/2020 18:34

Cold Seafood platter - this year ... something light as the focus will be on the feasting the next day ... and I am at work all day so want it to be easy don't like my DH's cooking. Grin He can assemble a salad!

myneighboursarerude · 13/12/2020 18:36

Fish and chips followed bucket loads of salt and vinegar crisps and Buck’s Fizz!

positivelynegative · 13/12/2020 18:36

Normally a spag bowl. Easy

What is a spag bowl?

Lilac95 · 13/12/2020 18:37

We usually cook a gammon ham and have home
Made chips with pickles/beetroot etc but this years we’re having steak

Plussizejumpsuit · 13/12/2020 18:39

I'm in the same boat as you op. We go out for a late lunch then to a relative's party where we'd have nibbles. So we don't normally have to think about it.

I think we'll either pre arrange to have something delivered if poss. Or just have nice bread, cheese and olives etc. Like many pp's have said I can't be arsed doing a big meal from scratch as I'm doing lots of cooking on Christmas day.

PollyDarton1 · 13/12/2020 18:42

Deliveries round here are shocking really (rural) and we haven't really established a tradition. When we were kids we'd have a Chinese (city).

I'll have a lot to do Christmas Eve with wrapping as I'm not going to get a chance to get ahead so chances are it'll be a buffet type tea. Quite looking forward to it actually!

user1493413286 · 13/12/2020 18:43

Pre covid we used to go out for lunch on Christmas Eve and just have a snack. Last year DH was working so we had a Chinese in the evening and this year we’ll have fajitas to have something a bit different before the cooked meats etc and open some champagne

Pinkmagic1 · 13/12/2020 18:50

Normally a Chinese takeaway.

BackforGood · 13/12/2020 18:53

It is usually a really busy day for us, so would just be a normal weekday tea, to have something inside us before going out to Carols on the Green (early) then on to someone's house for mulled wine.

Lifeispassingby · 13/12/2020 18:55

We usually have a little buffet and anything leftover is had on Boxing Day for a buffet then too. This year we have FIL funeral in the afternoon and a 300mile return trip home to do so we will have a takeaway if we feel like anything

Rutennotou · 13/12/2020 18:56

We always just buys loads of party food and have a few drinks. Goes down a treat.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/12/2020 18:58

Pizza, salad, garlic bread.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 13/12/2020 18:59

Wine Smile

PoptartPoptart · 13/12/2020 18:59

We usually get Fish and Chips on the way home from the nativity carol service.
The church is closed this year but we might still get fish & chips anyway.

Chocolateandamaretto · 13/12/2020 19:00

Normally a Chinese. In these covid times my parents have got a patio heater and a lot of blankets and we’re going to sit in their garden and have a winter bbq with hot choc and s’mores....will be chuffing cold but a bit of a laugh!
