To ask what you will be having for Xmas Eve dinner?

Usually we would be in the city centre, seeing the Xmas lights and markets, meeting with friends, getting some drinks and eating out for dinner. We get home slightly merry sozzled and very much in the Xmas spirit. That's not going to happen this year obviously, so can you share with me your Xmas Eve dinner suggestions? Do you do something special or save the effort for Xmas day?

Fish & chips. I work in a church, so usually work quite late on Christmas Eve. We started it about 10 years ago and have done it ever since. Before that, fish pie, always, through our early married years and my childhood.

CharitySchmarity · 13/12/2020 19:01

No idea - whatever I feel like cooking on the day from whatever DH has bought in the "big shop" on the Monday.

BritWifeinUSA · 13/12/2020 19:02

We always grill some ribs or something. Well, the men do that outside drinking beer at the same time and the women are usually inside with wine or cocktails. There are usually around 25 of us and I think there will be the same number this year. We have salad bowls, various breads and cheeses, etc and have it like a buffet.

We start the day with going to my husband’s sister’s resting place. She died on Christmas Eve. After we eat we talk about her and drink toasts to her. She was a wonderful young woman who died much too soon.

I haven't even decided what to have for Christmas dinner let alone other meals over Christmas. I will wait until vegetarian DD comes home from university next weekend and we will meal plan together.

Sooooooooooo sorry

‘Spag bol’

Really not that hard to work out, and if it was sarcastic, there really isn't any need !!

Pipandmum · 13/12/2020 19:05

Nothing special. Or perhaps takeaway. By the way there have been a few threads on this already.

I thought it was either spag bol or a big bowl of pasta. Speaking as a carb queen, the latter sounds amazing Smile.

@HellequineViriato Shock I came to say the exact same thing! DH is also Portuguese so we celebrate on 24th for him and 25th for me. His family also has chickpeas on their meal but that’s what we’ll be having too. Grin

We do some Mexican food

Refried beans, chilli and chicken fajitas

With tortillas, rice, cheese, guacamole and sour cream

Mainly cos i can cook most of it on the 23rd

Stillgoings · 13/12/2020 19:18

Pizza and red wine

funtimefrank · 13/12/2020 19:22

We're having our big dinner on Christmas Eve - not exactly trad Christmas dinner but all the bits we like.

I finish work at lunchtime in the 23rd then need to go out and pick up orders/brave the shops. We're then going out for a Christmas lights drive, stop off at the Chinese then back home to watch the Ghosts and Motherland crimbo special. So that feels very Christmas Eve-y then I get actual Christmas Eve! Double win!

Christmas Day is all day running buf.

MustardMitt · 13/12/2020 19:23

We have a Beige Buffet. Sausage rolls, spring rolls, stuff that can be bunged in the oven.

Thats what we do on boxing day 😀

I like to throw in some colours by using party rings and jammie dodgers

louisethedisease · 13/12/2020 19:28

Chinese takeaway

I did wonder how long it would take.

We always have out christmas dinner on christmas eve. Started when the kids were small and EH worked nights so I was on my own with them christmas day, trying to stop them eating chocolate, build toys, put batteries in cars, make dinner and spend some time with 2 toddlers. It was impossible and very stressful. So we have the meal the day before, it helped keep them occupied and stop them just getting so excited they ended up crying and they can eat chocolate for christmas day breakfast if they want now.

HollyGoLoudly1 · 13/12/2020 19:32

So many good suggestions, thanks everyone! I'm leaning towards the idea of a party food buffet style thing. Not much prep or clean up but would still feel like a treat Grin

We are going out for a. Urey.
Cant bloody wait.

FraughtwithGin · 13/12/2020 19:34

Homemade gravadlax with a frisee salad

TinkersRucksack · 13/12/2020 20:10

Home made vegetable soup, baguettes and ham, washed down with a bottle of bubbly.

That combo always makes me feel festive, and it's nice and easy before the carnage and indulgence of the following day.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/12/2020 20:13

I have schnitzel (or breaded fish) and special potato salad. It's our traditional Christmas Eve meal.

MrsTravers · 13/12/2020 20:18

Ordinarily we are away staying with family but can't this year. So think we are going to go for pizza and a large glass of wine on Christmas Eve lunchtime, then home, sort the last of the pressies, set out cold meats/cheeses/pickles and drinks on dining room table then kick off carols from kings at 5 so that everyone can help themselves. Am really looking forward to it.

theotherfossilsister · 13/12/2020 20:20

@FlumpetCrumpet please can we have the recipe? We are getting a Venison haunch that morning from the local game chap, and are still undecided how to cook it.
