So he’s cleaning the bathroom...

I know ianbu as cleaning the bathroom is always left to me but I had a strop and DH has said ‘fine I’ll do it, it’s not like it’s difficult!’

So in the last 10 minutes, ‘where are the rubber gloves? Which cloth do I use? What do I use to clean the bath?Do we have loo cleaner?’ What do I use on the glass?’ all items are in a storage thing in the bathroom. He has also soaked the floor cleaning the shower screen. I’d be lying if I wasn’t so slightly smug as I passed saying ‘remember to wipe down all the tiles, it’s not that hard!’

@BashfulClam

Shit just got real, the hoodie has come off...,
Is the SD for super dad?
goingtotown · 13/12/2020 18:15

Have you got a sticker for his good work?

ancientgran · 13/12/2020 18:15

@Gwenhwyfar I have 3 bins in the kitchen, the waste that goes to the tip, the compost bin and the recycling bin. The first two go straight into their bins outside the recycling bin has to be sorted for different containers e.g. cardboard and paper don't go in the same container, there is one for glass, one for plastic. I haven't got a big enough kitchen to have enough bins. Actually what I've started doing recently is I get the bin bag of waste for the tip and put the compost bag in it, it is only small, then I have carrier bags for the other things which I sort out from the recycling bin so I just take the compost bag out of the big bag and put them in their bins and empty the carrier bags into the respective containers. It is second nature to me now but was mind blowing when it started and even before he was officially classified as disabled he couldn't bend well so the array of low containers weren't easy for him.

BashfulClam · 13/12/2020 18:18

@WillSantaBeComingToTown no, we don’t have children.

@ancientgran surely the recycling is separated before putting bins out? We have general waste bin and then separate recycling bins so you just lift out each one onto the matching receptacle outside.

We (my partner) cleans the shower after use. Wipes it down and dries it off every day without fail. Takes him 10 minutes but we never have to clean it on a weekly basis and it never goes mouldy
Note I always have the first shower.
He cleans everything as he goes along so all we need to do is hoover and mop floors once a week and he helps me without asking. He's amazing 😍

WinterGarden633 · 13/12/2020 18:23

@Musicaltheatremum ... can he come to my house and teach my DH the ways of the House Master?! You jammy thing!

Borgonzola · 13/12/2020 18:31

My awful ex was never raised to do any cleaning because he's a man and it's 'against his culture' (not UK, but not an excuse) Hmm
I once asked him if he could clean the bathroom. He stood in the doorway, gestured around the room, and said 'how do I clean this?'
He had no idea where to start Confused

BashfulClam · 13/12/2020 18:32

@Musicaltheatremum I clean the sink and loo daily but the bath gets a deep clean weekly.

We are lucky that all our recycling goes into the one bin. Glass paper cardboard plastic metal etc. I have a large recycling bag in the kitchen I got from the council and when it is full I empty it into the recycling bin outside. At our last house which was a different council they also allowed us to put small appliances or tools into the bin. I got rid of old straighteners and a hairdryer that way.

Last week My OH told me three times that he’d hoovered. Obviously I wasn’t impressed enough the first two times he told me.

ivykaty44 · 13/12/2020 18:41

who he's finished you can admire his work and say

wow that looks great, you'll be able to continue that job now each week - great

MenaiMna · 13/12/2020 18:47

This book, second hand for less than £2 as his first Xmas present. Here is the ISBN 13: 9781845434465 it has a slightly sexist title but it gently pokes fun at how much men don't know about half of "adulting".
Content is suitable for teens and up.

HaggieMaggie · 13/12/2020 18:48

this is why all men should live alone first.

OTOH, who actually cleans their bathroom at a designated time slot. DS and his partner have a dedicated bathroom cleaning slot. I dont get it, you wipe the sink round after use, spray the shower screen with cleaner and give it a quick wipe after use, same with the bath, keep it clutter free, quick wipe of the floor on hands and knees, every day. same with tiles or glass.

unless you have a huge bathroom used by 6 people a day, I dont get it.

PoppyOppy · 13/12/2020 18:49

My DH put the bins out after I was recovering from a minor op.

Pitt he didnt empty the house bins into them first. He just pulled the wheelies to the front gate.🤦🏻‍♀️

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 13/12/2020 18:51

if it’s anything like my husband it will be a 2 hour marathon cleaning session, taking stuff apart, unblocking things... just clean what needs doing!!!!

But if you don't unblock things, is it really clean, is it? Xmas Grin

NB: I dismantle the pipework under the sinks on a regular basis to make sure we don't develop blockages or slime mould. Blush In between, I use a pressure washer to keep the pipework clean. We always lived in a house with such bad plumbing when I was young that I never wanted this to happen again.
@BigFatLiar it’s mostly lighthearted. I might wait till it’s just then go use the bog just like always happens the other way round.
Again @mumsnet I need a like button!

BashfulClam · 13/12/2020 19:42

@HaggieMaggie he had his own place for years before meeting me!

Reading this, I feel so lucky. DP is currently in the kitchen cleaning the cooker, washing the dishes and sorting the cats litter trays while I sit with my cup of tea and watch Christmas films. I should add, he wasn’t even asked to.

RB68 · 13/12/2020 20:05

he is just escaping christmas mush - lol good plan

Daphnise · 13/12/2020 20:09

It's all "Learned Helplessness".

And the sooner it's stopped the better.

IsFinnRogersDead · 13/12/2020 20:12

@Daphnise

It's all "Learned Helplessness".

And the sooner it's stopped the better.

Or strategic incompetence.
ItRubsTheLotionOnItsSkin · 13/12/2020 21:02

And people need to stop thinking they are "lucky" that their DH/DP does housework even though they have a cock.

I mean, come on. Is the bar set so low that we should be grateful for people doing basic fucking housework in the house they live in? People need to stop seeing it as helping - oh, and a bonus if they do it without even being asked.

goopsoup · 13/12/2020 21:06

Stay strong, OP, don’t let this be a one-off. I’ve never once cleaned the bathroom in all my years of marriage, it’s strictly DH’s job. (My equivalent is kitchen cleaning).

Coquohvan · 13/12/2020 21:07

OP good for you.
My OH is the eldest from an Italian family whose mother had him and his brother on a pedestal they never lifted a finger at home.

When we we’re moving into our house we had a chat about housework cooking etc. He had to be taught how to do things as I was working full time like him in a pressure work environment as he was. Now he can do it as good as me sometimes better as moving heavy furniture to vacuum.
To this day he still can’t work the washing machine what goes in temp colours etc. I had to leave written instructions when I went into labour with our twins.
Oddly he can fix most electrical things whiz with computers but washing machines are a complete mystery to him.
Now you’ve got him started keep it up it will work out OP.
My lovely MIL was amazed at what he done at home cooking great with the children shopping.
We got a new kitchen recently he is the one who is keeping it clear clutter free and pristine -:)
