Another northern where to live plea

I've seen a few threads where you guys have given great advice to people not sure where to live.

Aibu to ask for some tips too?

Small children and I'm realising I need to be closer to my parents. They live in Doncaster but for one reason and another that's not an option itself.

I like york. Husband likes mountains / sea. I'm less keen on living up a mountain to be fair. I'm also terrified of being isolated.

We would love somewhere with some things to do, places to walk, countryside, maybe a forest to explore or canals to walk alongside. Somewhere with nice views.

I appreciate I'm being very picky.

Budget at a stretch is 400k. Maybe 425.

Please be kind, this move is the cause of an awful lot of anxiety and I have bad pnd that improves when I can see my mum!

North Lincolnshire isnt yorkshire. It takes 40 minutes from york to doncaster on the train

@Whycantibetangy there’s some real white trash in York, sorry but there is, as I said said no one likes to admit it though. And I’ve definitely been Nestle we’re a big client of ours in a former organisation I worked for. And a good friend lives there. Nice bit but close to a rough bit. She’s had 2 cats shot with pellet guns in the past 2 years 😕.

Also it is very edgy on a weekend and it’s 50/50 between stag/hen and people who are clearly locals. I’m from Wakefield so have very low expectations 🤣.....but even I find afternoons/nights out in York rough - sorry 🤷‍♀️.

The things you’ve mentioned are real plus points though.

Sorry, i know that didn't make sense but N.Lincolnshire is in the Yorkshire and The Humber Government Office Region....

@Tinselerama21 I lived in York for 18 years and its about as yummy mummy, white middle class as you can get for a city. Yes, there are rough areas but nothing like most places I've lived in, including a small market town which was rife with crime and drugs.... Will agree that it's hell on a weekend with hen and stag dos, but no locals I know would ever go out in town on a Saturday night. Ever. I used to live near the racecourse, which is lovely but also hellish on race days. It's got great schools (and great pubs/clubs but you can't really enjoy them on the weekend.) I think Fulford school is the top state school in the country....or thereabouts.

Another vote for south west Sheffield. The peaks, parks and the city all on your doorstep. Would probably fit your budget. Good schools if that's important. And in the middle of the country so not a faff to get anywhere (speaking from experience of living in Hull!). Also easy to get to Donny.

I've lived in York. It was extortionate and too touristy for me.

Sheffield has its pluses and it’s minuses. On balance I’d say “could do worse”.

Are you looking for a good compromise or dream location here? If the former, Sheffield. If not, somewhere else.

If you live in a Doncaster postcode you can apply to the XP secondary schools. It is a ballot across the authority.

You could get something decent for the money in Ripon. Not quite popping in for a cuppa distance to Doncaster, but very close to the A1 so would be a quick journey - potentially easier than trekking across from the Peak District. (Just watch out for the gypsum.)
