Another northern where to live plea

I've seen a few threads where you guys have given great advice to people not sure where to live.

Aibu to ask for some tips too?

Small children and I'm realising I need to be closer to my parents. They live in Doncaster but for one reason and another that's not an option itself.

I like york. Husband likes mountains / sea. I'm less keen on living up a mountain to be fair. I'm also terrified of being isolated.

We would love somewhere with some things to do, places to walk, countryside, maybe a forest to explore or canals to walk alongside. Somewhere with nice views.

I appreciate I'm being very picky.

Budget at a stretch is 400k. Maybe 425.

Please be kind, this move is the cause of an awful lot of anxiety and I have bad pnd that improves when I can see my mum!

Or maybe something like this? www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/96866402#/

York is too far away from Doncaster, I’d have thought. I’m originally from near Stocksbridge- lots of lovely countryside there but some variation in schools. Check them out. Housing is very affordable- Dore will be different, I think. Also yes to Penistone area. We miss our South Yorkshire home countryside very much but love our current Liverpool home - but that’s far too far from Doncaster ( but near the sea!).

CoronaIsWatching · 14/12/2020 13:07

I'm buying in York next year hopefully, I'm looking at houses in the £170k to £190k range so I'm sure you will find something there! Main draws for me are the train links, nice walks in the city, a cycle ride to countryside, nice range of bars, pubs and restaurants in the city

Bluesheep8 · 14/12/2020 13:16

Hullensians imo....are really nice folk....not really Yorkshire folk at all.

Meaning people from Yorkshire aren't nice? Hull is in Yorkshire.

Poorlykitten · 14/12/2020 13:24

@CoronaIsWatching you won't get much in York for that, maybe a 1 bedroom terrace house or 2 bed flat in not a great area. We used to live in a 2 bed terrace there and they are now £250- £270. It's very pricey. We bought our 4 bedroom farmhouse for the same amount.

Lincolnshire its utterly bleak
In what way?

Yeah cup of tea distance would be good.

I have no medical knowledge but so much of my medically diagnosed mh stuff is vastly improved by mum hugs. In this modern world where we all move away for work no wonder we're all suffering 😭

How do you even pronounce penistone?!

Pennis-ton?
Penis-ton?
Penis-stone?
Penis-tone?

Oh dear

BikeRunSki · 14/12/2020 14:20

Penistone = Pen is stun

Unsurechicken · 14/12/2020 14:31

Have a look at the s20 postcode or even s43 or the outskirts of Worksop towards Rotherham. Grindleford is nice too.

Byeckythump · 14/12/2020 15:10

I grew up in the Peak District, no doubt it's beautiful but it's an absolute pain to get anywhere and about the furthest away from the sea that you could be! Really boring as a teenager, lots of drugs in Matlock and Chesterfield.

Currently in York which is fabulous for all the reasons others have outlined but very flat (and expensive). Nearest proper hills that are also close to the sea are the Howardian Hills, really beautiful area but probably a bit far to Donnie for you, an hour and a bit. This would be comfortably in your budget though [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/68167409#/]

Pocklington area might just fit the bill, wolds so more sort of rolling hills than mountains but close to the sea and not far from Doncaster.

It's Pen-is-ton. I wrote a report on it once and had to write the word penis about a million times, snigger Grin

MindThatTree · 14/12/2020 15:17

Beverley/Cottingham/some parts of hull north ferriby/welton Doncaster is only 45 mins from all of them places.

Tinselerama21 · 14/12/2020 16:54

If you want Mum hugs you don’t want to be looking at York, and Sheff/Peak District probably too far too.

Beverley, Swanland and Ferriby in East Yorkshire are definitely ones to consider. My Dad’s side of the fam are all from Bev - we love it. But again not popping distance at all. Also traffic can be absolutely shite! So 30/45 mins could more often than not be an 50 mins/an hr.

Honestly if you want popping distance, but nice, good schools and countryside you need to be looking at those villages I mentioned east of Wakefield/Pontefract and Barnsley.

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/12/2020 16:56

York is lovely! But 400k won’t get you as far as other places. The Peak District may suit your DH.

Tinselerama21 · 14/12/2020 16:56

Yeah I’m with @user1471565182 not sure why you’d live in Lincolnshire by choice!

Cocomarine · 14/12/2020 17:07

You may need to say what cup of tea distance actually means?
I suggested Retford and agreed with Sheffield - both about an hour. But another poster thinks that is too far.
Do you want somewhere that’s never too far (like an hour) or somewhere you’d happily do the drive most days. York is quite a way, with traffic.

Bunnybigears · 14/12/2020 17:11

You may need to say what cup of tea distance actually means?

Yes to this, In my opinion I would say half an hour is maximum for 'popping in' over that its more like a planned visit.

SaffyWall · 14/12/2020 17:17

Pocklington - lovely little town 15 minutes from York and 45 minutes from Doncaster...

SaskiaRembrandt · 14/12/2020 17:30

I'd recommend Sheffield - I liked it so much I moved here. The south-west area of the city is lovely, all the different areas have a really villagey feel and are close to the Peak District, but the commute into the city is easy. If it's out of your price range though, have a look at the villages south of Doncaster, there are some nice ones and last time I checked they were a bit cheaper.

I'm not going to diss Lincolnshire, but I couldn't' live there. It's so flat, it gives me the creeps.

BikeRunSki · 14/12/2020 17:30

I was thinking of Pocklington too. Nice town, but I’d say it’s a good hour + to Donny.

MrsPnut · 14/12/2020 18:21

Lincoln itself is quite rough outside of a few small areas but the villages around it are pretty nice. Lincoln is about 10 years behind the rest of the world though.
It has got pretty good schools and it has got a lot of countryside. It also has a lot of aircraft too including the Red Arrows which does lift the spirits.

@Cocomarine, I live on the top of a cliff about 5 miles from Lincoln. Not quite the Peak District but not flat. I can see right across the Trent Valley on a clear day.

Cocomarine · 14/12/2020 18:24

@MrsPnut I know Lincolnshire fairly well. Of course it’s not all completely flat, but as a resident surely you’d also give it a Grin for someone who, “likes mountains”?

MrsPnut · 14/12/2020 18:26

If we were recommending Boston then I’d do an eye roll, the Wolds and Lincoln are completely different.

Flagsfiend · 14/12/2020 18:35

You are obviously looking at the ridiculously posh bits of Sheffield if you can't find a decent sized house for £400k. You just need to move your search area slightly to find what you are after. Instead of looking in Dore and Fulwood, search for Norton or Crosspool. Houses in Sheffield vary in price massively from £50k for a 3 bed maisonette in a less desirable part of the city, to several million for a mansion in the posh bits. Any area with houses for £400k is more or less guaranteed to be a nice area!

lakesideadvent · 14/12/2020 18:43

Tadcaster and around it might be possibility?
Not as nice as York but good schools and easy to get out to countryside.
Decent transport links by road.
