Another northern where to live plea

NouvelleMamanNouvelleVie · 13/12/2020 12:05

I've seen a few threads where you guys have given great advice to people not sure where to live.

Aibu to ask for some tips too?

Small children and I'm realising I need to be closer to my parents. They live in Doncaster but for one reason and another that's not an option itself.

I like york. Husband likes mountains / sea. I'm less keen on living up a mountain to be fair. I'm also terrified of being isolated.

We would love somewhere with some things to do, places to walk, countryside, maybe a forest to explore or canals to walk alongside. Somewhere with nice views.

I appreciate I'm being very picky.

Budget at a stretch is 400k. Maybe 425.

Please be kind, this move is the cause of an awful lot of anxiety and I have bad pnd that improves when I can see my mum!

When you ask which areas of York are rougher, I suspect the ones where you could get the house you want for your budget, I'm afraid. It is expensive.

uggmum · 14/12/2020 09:19

That's a large area to pin down.
York and the out skirts are lovely.

I am not keen on Sheffield. Although some of the peak district is pretty.

Huddersfield has some lovely areas but the city centre is dire and it can take ages to get anywhere.

Leeds has some great areas.

Wakefield also has some lovely areas and good transport links, plenty of green space. Cheap house prices too.

I loved up north from London 30+ years ago and I did settle in Wakefield. I can get to Leeds in 15 mins and there are lovely canal walks from my front door, good schools etc.

To the suggestion of Penistone and Thurgoland may I add Denby Dale/HD8 villages. It ticks all your boxes other than sea, but we have plenty of reservoirs to walk round, sail on and swim in . I commute to Doncaster (Bentley) - takes less than an hour out of hours, about 1 hr 15 in full in roadworks/rush hour.

We have an excellent first/middle/high school system and very reasonable house prices.

I also fully agree with Slaithwaite/Marsden/Holmfirth.

The SW Sheffield/Dark Peak/Hope Valley area would be my choice if money were no object (we rented there for several years), but we we could not afford to buy there. Hope, Castleton, Edale, Bamford, Bradwell, Hathersage area. We havn’t lived there fir 15 years, but the key concern always used to be secondary education, and whether to be in catchment for Lady Manners or Hope Valley College. Again, very far from the coast, but Hathersage has an outdoor pool.

@LadyFelsham

One does have to avoid York centre on Saturday afternoons-full of stag and hen parties, roaring and vomiting on the streets!
Yes- many from Doncaster!

Same in Harrogate. Get the train up Saturday pm- drinks on the train. Usually at least 1 urine emergency on the chugger.

Drink in Harrogate- then head to Leeds until the nightclubs close. Sleep in and round the station and getter 1st train back home Sunday morning.

Id go around pickering area. Close to York, right next to dalby forest and on the yorkshire moors/wolds border.

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 14/12/2020 10:12

I like how everyone’s suggesting Sheffield etc that’s not north. 🤣

user1471565182 · 14/12/2020 10:13

I dont really think anywhere in York is truly rough. Its the pissed up tourists that ruin the place. To be fair when I come over from Hull there are far more homeless in York, but theyre friendly. Maybe look at Bishop road although its full of snobby wanks

cologne4711 · 14/12/2020 10:43

What about Lincoln? Not quite close enough to pop in for a cup of tea - probably about an hour.

user1471565182 · 14/12/2020 10:51

Lincolnshire its utterly bleak

Porcupineinwaiting · 14/12/2020 11:02

Lincolnshire is utterly bleak

Not utterly, just largely.

hamstersarse · 14/12/2020 11:04

Easingwold is a lovely town just outside York

Beverley is also a great town.

user1471428628 · 14/12/2020 11:12

Skipton is lovely but quite a trek from Donnie. Or Otley/ilkley/bingley. All nice smallish towns not far from Leeds and Bradford.

user1471565182 · 14/12/2020 11:24

I would have said Beverley myself but I know loads of people who live there and just about all are looking to move. I'll have to ask them why. It is very small town though.

Bunnybigears · 14/12/2020 12:29

I like how everyone’s suggesting Sheffield etc that’s not north

Nope but its commutable to Doncaster which is what the OP asked for it was the OP who claimed she was asking for Northern places to live then mentioned Doncaster. None of the areas being mentioned are 'proper North' in my opinion but I guess it depends where you start from.

Bunnybigears · 14/12/2020 12:30

A lot of these places are not really pop in for a cuppa distance of Doncaster.

Bearlyawake · 14/12/2020 12:37

York is great, nice areas include Fulford, Heworth, Huntington and Rawcliffe. You'll get more for your money in Rawcliffe.

Just about in budget, not a rough (🤣) place to live and you’d be amazed how fast you can get to the countryside from here...[/quote]
I live quite close to this place. Unfortunately it's on a very busy A road with shocking air pollution levels and parking could be an issue.

Cocomarine · 14/12/2020 12:42

@NouvelleMamanNouvelleVie

Thanks for the suggestions so far :-) just been looking at Sheffield and it seems really expensive. I'll keep trying!
Sheffield expensive?! I disagree with the Peak District options that have been suggested. It’s a lovely area, but it’s bloody miles from the sea!
Cocomarine · 14/12/2020 12:43

@cologne4711

What about Lincoln? Not quite close enough to pop in for a cup of tea - probably about an hour.
Did you see the bit about liking mountains? Grin
Cocomarine · 14/12/2020 12:47

Take a look at Retford? Good for Doncaster, not a million miles each way for mountains and see, good rail link to London and York so likely do hold / increase value as a commuter town.

Cocomarine · 14/12/2020 12:47

*sea

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 14/12/2020 12:47

York is awful these days........it's a real shame what encouraging the stags and hen parties has done to the place.

I'd go Sheffield / Harrogate or even Chester if you want hills and by the sea.

FitterHappierMoreProductive · 14/12/2020 12:47

@thatonesmine

I wouldn’t buy there either (S10 girl through and through), my point was more that you can find things in budget in nice bits of Sheffield. You’d need to spend a lot more for no compromises though.

AiryFairyMum · 14/12/2020 12:49

Harrogate and York are so expensive. I'd go for Sheffield outskirts or over towards Chesterfield.

AiryFairyMum · 14/12/2020 13:02

Oooh I love this one www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/87644419#/
