My little girl is 18 months old and I’m not sure when I should let her have a pillow to sleep with and a quilt instead of the little grow bags as it’s now gone freezing here. Please don’t come for me I’m a first time mum just looking for a little advice Xmas Grin

Mine had a toddler little flat pillow for a bout five seconds from somewhere between 12 and 17 months but went back to the sleepyhead so ditched it. And she's never had a sleeping bag just blankets or bed sharing but I'll get her a 4tog duvet soon (she's 2 now) I think and try and tuck it in more so she can't kick it off so much. I think a bag would be warmer though, you can get thicker ones and layer up and they can't kick it off?

SarahAndQuack · 11/12/2020 09:30

Mine was 13 months - I can remember because it's when we finally got her out of her cot and into a bed in her own room, and it was such a relief!

I think in general the reasoning most of my antenatal group used was, once they're big enough to get tangled up in the grow bag trying to get up, it's worth going to blankets/quilt because otherwise they're more likely to do themselves harm.

If you find she's kicking a quilt off (mine still does) it may be worth getting a blanket you can tuck down under the mattress at the edges, so she can wiggle out of she's hot but it shouldn't come loose so easily she gets cold if she turns over in the night.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 11/12/2020 09:33

Mine were about 18 months. I did it during warmer weather so they wouldn't be too cold if they kicked it off.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 11/12/2020 09:34

I’d stick with sleeping bag for the winter. They are lovely and cosy.

LittleMG · 11/12/2020 09:35

My little boy is 2 still in his bag, I’m worried if I take him out he’ll get out of the cot! Sorry to hijack your post but I’m in the same position as you, when do u buy a toddler bed??

dementedpixie · 11/12/2020 09:35

Pillow from 1 year. Duvet from 2½ when they went into a single bed. They had a sleeping bag up until then

HappyChristmasTreeRex · 11/12/2020 09:36

Mine was just turned 2, she had become too long for the sleep bags!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 11/12/2020 09:36

2 is the perfect age to go in a toddler bed I’d say.

Utini · 11/12/2020 09:37

Mine was three years old. We tried earlier but she couldn't keep it on her in the night. We used JoJo's sleep snugglers until then though, which have individual legs, so she could get up and walk around in it.

happymummy12345 · 11/12/2020 09:39

When he went into a toddler bed at 17 months. Before that we used cellular blankets and the coverlets that came in the crib and then the cot bedding sets. (Never used sleeping bags as never saw the point or need and I don't like them)

Loubylou9162 · 11/12/2020 09:50

DD went into a toddler bed at 15 months because she kept climbing out of her cot and hurting herself. So I made the switch from a grow bag to a thin duvet then, she’s 2 next month and now has a pillow and winter tog toddler duvet

dementedpixie · 11/12/2020 09:53

You can get sleeping bags up to age 10!
Rinoachicken · 11/12/2020 09:54

Didn’t go by age. Came out of sleeping bags once they were standing up as they would try and stand up in the sleeping bag in the cot and trip over.

Didn’t bother with a pillow until they moved to toddler bed at around 2yrs

meow1989 · 11/12/2020 09:55

At 2 when we took the side of his cot. Would have kept him in longer if he wasn't climbing out!

meow1989 · 11/12/2020 09:56

Regarding the pillow, I still go in at night and take it away from him. Which is ridiculous because its the same thickness as the quilt and he can sleep with a.proper pillow if were staying somewhere and sharing a bed.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 11/12/2020 09:59

Both of ours transitioned to duvet when they went into a bed, we started with afternoon naps in the bed and when they were happy with that took them out of their sleeping bags and cot for night time

They were both just turned 2 at this stage, we were lucky to have room to have cots and beds in their rooms at the same time as it gave them time to become familiar with them before we made the move over

Dobbyismyfavourite · 11/12/2020 10:14

It's been a while but my DD was in her growbag until at least 2 1/2. The problem with duvets is that toddlers move around a lot in bed so they get flung off quite easily. I had to buy the straps to keep them on as my DD used to wake up cold in the night and call out. My DD only came out of growbags when she was too tall.

Lightwindows · 11/12/2020 10:19

My 2 year old is still in a sleeping bag. I wouldn't change to a duvet at the moment as it's cold and if he kicks it off he'll wake up. If I'm going to I'll switch to a duvet in warmer weather.

namechangetheworld · 11/12/2020 10:23

DD1 was almost three! We had a 3.5 tog sleeping bag with arms because her room got super chilly in the winter. She was always really toasty when she got out in the morning. She could unzip it herself before she was 2, so no isues with getting tangled up.

reluctantbrit · 11/12/2020 10:30

DD was just over 2, she started climbing out of the cotbed so we took the rails down and she herself asked for a blanket and pillow, it seems she associated no rails with normal bedding.

That was Summer though, so when she kicked off her duvet it wasn't the end of the world.

In winter I had her in a long sleeve vest plus pyjamas with feet and a thin blanket, she was always someone who needed more than the guidelines say.

Anoisagusaris · 11/12/2020 10:35

When they moved from cot to bed. Never used toddler beds, all went straight to a king sized bed (had them already).

JudgeRindersMinder · 11/12/2020 10:37

Sheets and blankets in the cot, pillow and quilt when they went into a bed, so about 2ish

TheKeatingFive · 11/12/2020 10:38

About 18 months

Tinselandbaubauls · 11/12/2020 10:40

It was a while ago but I believe when they went into beds.

AnnnaBananna · 11/12/2020 10:45

My kids had a quilt at about 2. We had to start putting on vests for bed because they would frequently kick off the quilt then get cold and cry. Still no pillow at 3yo, they haven’t asked for one and showed no interest so I haven’t volunteered one. I figure it’s safer to avoid pillows for as long as possible.
